I agree with OleMiss. That's a toughy. I chose SS and here's how I got there.
DE- Signing Antonio Smith helped the DE spot, him and Mario should be a good starting tandem.
DT- I like Amobi and think he's still developing. I'd like to add a DT but I think our rotation of guys is decent.
WLB- I like Adibi and think he'll continue to grow into the starting role.
MLB- Demeco is awesome, we just need to get more help around him.
SLB- This was close for me. Diles is coming off injury and that really concerns me. Adding a starting SLB would make him backup with the other LBs we have and would turn this group into the strength of our Defense IMO.
CB- This was very close for me. I like Reeves and he's playing as our best CB. Dunta never played 100% since his injury and there's a pretty good chance this is his last year. Bennett HAS to recover from his sophomore slump. Molden showed lots of potential and got injured late in the year. Faggins is next in line and he could be gone. CB right now is boom or bust for us. Adding a 1st round CB would mean this would be Dunta's last year most likely.
FS- I've always wanted a FS for this team and we just gave Wilson a decent contract. I think he performed well but not great.
SS- Barber is being touted as someone the coaches love and may want to start. I think right now he'd be a great special teamer and backup SS. Not real confident of him being the starting SS at this point but I hope I'm wrong.
SLB and DB are the two critical positions for me right now on defense.
DT because as Creedence Clearwater revival once sang "Who'll stop the run?" if it is your LB or SS , it probably means the guy is already past the Dline.
I like Delmas in 2nd and R. Johnson in 4th.I agree with OleMiss.
That's why I'm hoping that we can trade down to get another pick in the 2nd.
It doesn't have to be a FS, if a guy can play both positions adequately, I'm all for a football player first.
I would like to have a late first plus two second rounders; or three 2nd rounders.
I'd take two safeties and a CB
Rashad Johnson, William Moore, Delmas, Chung, among other safeties.
DJ Moore, Alphonso Smith, Sean Smith Macho Harris, among other CBs.
That will take care of the backside and transform the team immediately.
One unit that can stay together for years to come.
Glad to see you posting! I see Bennett as best CB last year and should only improve this season. Dunta will be Dunta except probably about 95% rather than 80% last year. He will not be a drag on field or problem in club house. Bennett will hve his mentor (Dunta)back and should grow even more. Molden should be 100% soon and Petey Faggins may not make team.Well, I don't know near as much as you guys, BUT, I'll play along anyway. I voted CB. I don't have much faith in Reeves, and not to confident with Dunte since he got diarrhea of the mouth. Time will tell with both. Bennett and Molden are still big ? marks IMHO Maybe a good TC will help both to learn how to keep an eye on the ball!! I still don't know what role Ferguson or Harrison will play in the secondary, but, I think our secondary as a whole, needs LOTS of help. JMO! I'm bored today and lonely, need to interact with TEXANS!!!!!

How about Jenkins at #15 for FS/CB
Ron Brace NT in 2nd
Rashad Jennings RB 3rd
Canfield OG at 4A
Holtzclaw LB at 4B
Don't know why running back wasn't up there as a choice. We are one deep at that position and that means one hit away from Ryan Moats as are feature back. Folks we aren't going to make it with our RB depth chart..
Good point. I need to ask the mods to change the title of this thread to "Texans Greatest Defensive Team Need" or add a poll option for "Offense - specify in a post". There's not enough poll options to include all of the possible positions.
Fixed the title. You can post a second thread for offense.
In Steve Wyche's mock on nfl.com he has us taking Malcolm Jenkins CB of Ohio State, and using him as a Free Safety.
What are the thoughts on this as a plan?? It could be a nice option if the coaches like him because he can also be insurance in case Dunta doesn't get back to his old self.
The Texans biggest need is a pass rusher. Mario is not enough. I don't care what position he plays. Or what round he's taken. Or if he emerges from the roster. Once the Texans can bring consistent heat on the QB, everything will get easier and everyone will look better. Especially, the coaches.
Me and (Kollar) spoke about playing the three-technique position and being on the same page, Okoye said. Just me doing more of what I did in college (at Louisville) as far as being aggressive and trying to get in the backfield and be disruptive.
Instead of waiting to see, reading the shoulders to see what (the blocker is) doing, Im trying to blow through his shoulders this time.
When I read the paper this morning, I thought "this is closest anyone has come talking about previous coach." I want to see Okoye "explode through the shoulders" and go after QB.
If our Dline is collapsing the pocket and hurrying the QB, the RB may have to stay in and block. Our LBs will be able to focus on the short range dumps and the SS can play closer to the line as our CBs can cover the WRs in bump and run with type D. A fast FS such as Rashad Johnson or who knows, Jenkins can roam deep. We will not shut down ever play or even every series but we should be able to keep our O on the field longer and run up more points. If one of the hallmarks of our new and improved D is to have a gap penetrating style of D line play, then IMHO there are going to be consequences to this and it is going to put more pressure on our linebackers and secondary.
I think we do have the DL personnel to focus on getting upfield, but I think that this is going to leave us more susceptible to giving up short to intermediate passes in the flats (3 step drops, bootlegs) as well as screens and RB dump passes. We are going to have to place a premium on LB and secondary speed as well as having great communication on alignment and assignments.
Also, the OLB's are going to have to deal with more OL downfield (if they are getting free releases on screens and the like). This could be a problem for an undersized LB corps. If we see Mario making a lot of plays downfield in pursuit it is going to show how big of a problem this really is.
If our penetrating D linemen miss on running plays in the backfield, then we are going to put more pressure on the MLB and SS in run defense. I would really like to see us have a SS thumper that can crash down in run support and has good quickness and lateral agility (long speed is less of a concern).
These are just some of my general concerns with the quick penetrating scheme that we are hearing so much about right now. I know that that is more of a base philosophy that we will add wrinkles to and change up, but to me this really brings into focus the need to make sure we are fielding the right personnel at OLB and SS.
This really leads me to think that one our our biggest needs is to focus on improving or upgrading our OLB play.

Gotta do what you do well...
I'm not even sure why they drafted Amobi if they knew he'd be playing in a read and react defense. That's not his game at all.
Coach to your players strengths. Okoye needs to be allowed to go upfield. Mario needs to be allowed to upfield, heck even TJ needs to be allowed to go upfield. What a concept. Make the RB cut before he has the ball or within a step of getting it, making plays on their side of the line, wow is that how football should be played? With aggression?
Instead, our last defensive coordinator utilized a "read then react" defense. "Read" a magazine and then "React" when the other team scores.
