Disappointed in Glenn....

Why? It makes me laugh that guys like he and Sharper crumble under the fact that there MIGHT be some more competition at their spot. I thought Glenn was a bigger man that that. It makes me realize what a great man a guy like Roger Clemens is. Despite the fact that he's still a Cy Young pitcher, he said when he resigned with the Astros this year that he wanted to be around to see the younger guys grow and help them get better. Shame on Aaron for not being the same way.

I doubt that is it at all. More than likely the Front office said, "Aaron, we think you might be better off shopping around and seeking a trade because unless you come down off your salary a whole lot we are going to release you before the season starts..."

I bet it went something like that. But that's just me guessing and who really knows until the deal is done and we get the annoncement?

Are you serious? HE is going because they are moving in a different directiong. He is still talented enough to start somewhere in this league and the same goes for sharper. Why the hell should he stay to be a bench player, when he can go start somewhere else? Aaron Glenn is doing the right thing for him.

Why should he be loyal to a team that just traded to replace him? Its called free agency, and he deserves to be cut so he can find somewhere where he will be appreciated.

And as far as I know Clemens is still a starting pitcher for the team. And you will never ever see him reduced to a middle reliever...because he will retire before that would ever happen.

That is beside the fact that he is getting paid alot of money to be a nickleback, so the texans were looking to cut him. You dont need to spend millions upon millions on a nickleback when that money could be spent elsewhere.

I think that it could be a number of things going on in Glenn's head well first as you said it could be that he can't stand the position that he's been put in with PB hittin the scene, considering the fact that he has be the #1 corner his entire NFL career, it's probably not something that he can except in a way that's understandable but in a way it's not, sometimes you have to make run for the new and accept it. You remember Ricky Watters (The Guy B4 Shaun Alexander)? We all gotta go sometime no matter how good you were...

Another thing that could be going on in his head is that, he maybe feel like he's got 1 or 2 more yrs left before he retires and he doesn't wanna risk leaving his career as a backup and he wants to go out the way that all football stars dream of. And I can't fault him for that either. Either way it doesn't matter to me cause we continue to get younger and faster on Defense and I'm loving it.. D-Rob, PB, Greenwood, Peek, Babin, Earl and Johnson..

Go Texans

Yall act like they told Glenn straight up "You're not going to start"

Please...do some of you not realize PB was not starting some games for Oakland last year?

Quit making assumptions before you pop off.

I think someone else in another thread also put it best, that the elite athletes are usually the last ones to realize their skills are fading. Much like a Craig Biggio.

You made an assumption yourself in your first post. You don't know exactly what happened between the Texans and Glenn, yet you assumed that Glenn quit on the Texans.

Glenn did not quit the Texans and the Texans did not quit Glenn it was a mutual break-up that was best for both parties. They asked Glenn to take a serious pay cut in order to stay or that he should move on to another team. The fact of the matter he will go play for another team and get paid more than what we were offering in the pay cut. That is the plain and simple truth. You all can speculate and meander about your thoughts but this is how the business of football works. It sucks to lose someone with his skills and leadership but it is what it is so we will move on and PB will be looked upon to come up big or Faggins will be our starter, it is that simple...

Yea PB better come with the right attitude but i think he will.

Let's face it this is a BUSINESS. Why should Glenn have to take a paycut?

Loyalty? In the NFL is like going trying to turn a hooker into a housewife.

Let's face it a CB of glenn's talent can still go somewhere and START not to mention beyond that make as much money as he was making with the texans. I'm sure he enjoyed his hometown team much but its a business at the end of the day and loyalty has nothing to do with it.

Hey USMC_dude you're not just guessing, I think you probably gotta a good
take on just how things went down in that meeting. But the thing is our D
was gettin real long in the tooth and anytime now some of the vets will begin to hit the wall. And at the same time they are real expensive !
With some of these changes we're making to the D now, we are gonna go
from being old to having only a couple starters on the D who are out of their 20s, and they will be a lot more cap friendly.

Glenn was on the radio just now and said he asked to be let out. He was praising the Texans for letting him control his future. I think he was afraid of being a late cut due to his salary.

Glenn is fourth defensive starter to leaveESPN.com news services

HOUSTON -- Veteran cornerback Aaron Glenn, one of the original Houston Texans, was released by the team Tuesday to clear room for the recently acquired Phillip Buchanon.

"We want to thank Aaron Glenn for all that he's done for the Houston Texans both on and off the field," Texans general manager Charley Casserly said. "He's been a very fine player for us. ... We wish him well as he goes forward in his career."

Houston coach Dom Capers met with the 12-year veteran shortly after the team picked up Buchanon in a trade with Oakland last week and offered Glenn the options of reduced playing time or finding another team.

The Texans will pair Buchanon with 2004 first-round draft pick Dunta Robinson, giving them a pair of speedy and talented 24-year-old cornerbacks.

Both the Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots were believed to be interested in trading for the veteran before he was released.

Glenn, who turns 33 in September, becomes the fourth defensive starter for the Texans to leave this offseason. Inside linebackers Jamie Sharper and Jay Foreman and strong safety Eric Brown were released in March, part of the Texans' offseason makeover of a defense that finished in the bottom third of the NFL for a second straight season.

Glenn was one of the franchise's most popular players and a leader in the locker room.

"I appreciate all that he has done for us in the time that he's been here," Capers said. "He set the tone as far as leadership and work ethic for our franchise over the first three years. You hate to lose him, but it's the nature of the business."

Glenn, a Texas A&M product, played with the New York Jets for eight seasons before joining his hometown Texans in the 2002 expansion draft. He was selected to his third Pro Bowl in the team's first year but was limited to only 11 games in 2003 because of various injuries.

He rebounded with a solid season in 2004, intercepting five passes and making 63 tackles while serving as a mentor for Robinson.

"It was a good stint with Houston. I got a lot out of it," Glenn told Houston television station KRIV. "There are still some other teams involved where I can be a starter. I still have some decisions to make."

Then I'm okay with that. If he was going to be a June 1 cut, and he knew that, I take back my first post. I think the organization is doing well and showing other players in the league that if they come here, they won't have to deal with playing games with the front office. I think teams that cut players on June 1 are chickensh!t, for lack of a better word.

The Texans were straight-forward and candid with Glenn. I appreciate the fact that the team didn't string him along and showed him his due respect. I heard Glenn interviewed on 610am and he praised the team. I think this kind of behavior from the Texans will go a long way in landing future players. Players know how this business works and the team was good enough to let Glenn choose his path.

It's part of the business, we haven't seen the end of it yet. We brought in some younger players to compete and that was the right way to do it. If a player doesn't want to be here then let them go. It's good for the Texans any way you look at it. He is happy and we saved some money and got younger and faster at the same time. Now you can teach the younger players the system that will make them excel. I think we will be a better D this coming season than we have ever been. Caper have done that in Pittsburg before. They were like a factory, making LBs, Ss and CBs.

Let me put an end to this right now.

Glenn didnt show up on friday to workouts and told a teammate that he didnt think that glenn fit the mold of a Texan. He basically made the blunt statement Buchannon wouldn't fit into the team first concept.

that made no sense

i'm all for giving the guy a 2nd chance. i bet he learned his lesson in oakland, and now maybe he knows what it takes. besides, if he doesnt shape up, he wont earn much more than he's already making on his next contract

Hey 88 I'm just curious how you have so much "inside" information?? Who do you know thats on the team or works for the team? I'm just curious and not trying to call you out. You can send me a PM if you don't want to post it.

BradK10:

i missed Glenn's interview w/Mark & Rich but i caught their re-cap of what was said. An item mentioned was that Petey (Faggens) is a quality nickel & there was the thought that competition for the 3rd CB spot was going to be a tough one. Additionally, they said Faggens could start for a lot of teams...... sounded like (to me) Aarron was in agreement w/those statements.

Sorry to argue about baseball on a football thread but you make it sound like Biggio is not producing. Im sorry, I can't sit back and let Craig be critisized. The fact is, Biggio is the only Astro that can get a hit right now.

Craig Biggio:
AB - 70,
H - 22
2B - 8,
HR - 2
RBI - 8
OBP - .337
SLG - .514
BT AVG - .314

I think Bagwell was the one you meant to critisize. Yes, Bagwell is the one who's skills are fading.

I knew someone would come out and say that. I know Biggio is hitting well, but he's also the type of guy we can't keep extending and picking options up for every year at 4 million per especially when we've got younger cheaper guys ready to step up. Yes, Bagwell is fading more, but that's the problem with baseball...it's guaranteed money.

Point taken, and even though I knew it when I said it, the reason I used Biggio as an example is because we've kept extending him and picking up options. Bagwell's just got a horrendous contract.

Man, with all the changes, I can see this team 10-6 or 6-10. Sometimes these things work out, and other times they blow up in your face.

Of course, I'm hoping for success, but I will also brace myself that this defensive unit might take some time to gel.

I could have sworn that Casserly was talking last week that we needed another high caliber CB (during a news conference over signing PB), especially since we play nickelback almost 50% of the time! :um:

Also how can you be disappointed in Glenn? Did he hold the front office at gunpoint and make them say "you can negotiate with other teams?" Did he hold them at gunpoint and make them release him? Did he ever once personally come out live and voiced his displeasure? I bet alot of these things are not true, Glenn is too classy for that. If he did say that he didn't belong here any longer, he probably just wanted the best for all the other young cb's and for himself.

Yup...and we kept hearing that you couldn't have enough quality CBs, especially when facing the Clots twice a year. So I'm left to wonder two things: 1) Casserly may never have intended to keep Glenn once PB was signed, and 2) if granting him a release within a week was so classy, why didn't Jamie Sharper get that treatment?

1) The team could have intended to keep Glenn, but once he said he would rather play elsewhere than have is playing time reduced, they had to go with a different plan

2) Timing: Since this is post-draft, Glenn has less time to latch on to team. So, given no trade deal could be worked out, it makes sense his release would happen more quickly in order to give him a better chance to find a good situation.

We may have held onto Sharper hoping to get a draft pick, but once it became obvious that there were no takers, we just released him.

Not much to say here--C&C bungled the Sharper situation and now the Glenn situation. Play it harder and you get a little something on either of these guys--mid round pick. But no, they have to be earnest little weasels and announce intentions, with the result that we get nothing in return.

How the fanboys around here can continue to support these two clowns (C&C) is beyond me. The only good news is that Capers, at least, will be gone by season's end. Then we can start the real rebuilding.

Thats the point that people aren't getting... it never was about whether or not AG or Sharper are worth a late round pick. They both had contracts that made them completely unattractive to other teams. Exactly the same situation with S. Alexander and Edge. No team wants to eat the big contracts.
I am suprised that no one mentions Alexander and Edge more when they discuss how AG and Sharper were screwed over by the Texans.
Shaun and Edge are being handled exactly the same way, and aren't getting any buyers. I don't hear the faithful around here clamouring about how the 'Hawks and Clots are doing them wrong, and they are both better and more valuable players than either AG or Sharper.

I would say we will be facing , not could be facing. I think Payne and Walker are safe for this season, but the team may find a way to replace Mckinney and it wouldn't suprise me at all if it happened to him. Not a prediction, mind you, I just won't be suprised if it happens.

If you listened to Glenn on 610 this afternoon, he was pretty clear that he decided there was not going to be enough playing time for all four CB's. He said that Casserly and Capers had been upfront with him all along and had told him at the beginning of the offseason that they would be pursuing a corner and that Glenn was still part of the plan. If they had drafted a corner, that player would have eased into things and wouldn't have been expected to make a significant contribution on defense. However, Buchanon is ready to play right now. Glenn said that the Texans use three CB's in both the nickle and dime packages, usually bringing in an extra safety or a linebacker in the dime package and that whoever ended up the fourth CB probably wouldn't get much playing time at all. Even though Casserly and Capers both wanted him to stay, Glenn decided it was best for everyone if he went elsewhere and allowed the young Texan CB's to get the playing time they deserved.

It really sounded like he made his decision because he didn't want to see Faggins languish on the bench. Not that Glenn was afraid of competition, because he is going to a situation where the Cowboys have Newman at one spot and they just signed Henry to a large contract for the other CB spot. I bet Glenn has spent quite a bit of time tutoring Faggins and his proud to see how the former 6th rounder has progressed from a practice squad guy to someone who could be a quality #2 CB in this league.

After listening to Glenn's interview with Lord and Vandermeer I am even more impressed with Glenn than I ever have been and I am also impressed with the class that Casserly and Capers use in running the Texans.

walker and especially payne are in better situations than sharper, foreman, brown, and glenn. how many quality nose tackles are out there? quality Dlineman are hard to find and in our 3-4 system, they're worth alot more than a cb or lb. its alot easier to replace a lb or cb than a dlineman. thats how i see it anyway, just my opinion.
