Frustrated

Right now I am very frustrated as a Texans fan. I have a season ticket and watch all road games on TV. I think when you compare this team to the team last year; the team on the field last year is better. The team did not address the offensive line. They somewhat addressed wide receiver with a third round pick. Was anyone else hoping we would trade up to get the eventual best player in the draft, Mike Williams, when he was slipping? I believe the defense will be worse. Subtracting Sharper and Glenn is very disappointing to me. They were the two veteran faces on the defense that were known throughout the league. Glenn was getting up there in age but he was still a great corner when he was on the field. He was a playmaker. He might not of intercepted the ball a lot this past year, but he had key deflections. I am a big advocate of getting Peek on the field, but I'm not sure getting rid of Sharper is the way to do that. Foreman, yes. We have yet to see what comes of Travis Johnson, but Defensive Tackles, fat guys who plug up the middle and control the run, can be found later in the draft. Plus, I believe DeLoach and Payne are formidable at that spot for now. I think Clayton, Spears, or Pollack would have been much better picks. NOT DJ like what all of the hometown brainwashed UT fans believes. The Buchanon trade would have been great had we kept Glenn, like we all believed we were going to do. We could use Buchanon as a nickel back and have him as an insurance policy in case Glenn got injured. Groom him to be Glenn's long term replacement. Now we have him on an island opposite Dunta and from Raider fans, it doesn't sound like that is a good thing. Hopefully practicing against AJ everyday can improve his play and attitude about football since the two both went to Miami.

I like the slow growth approach the Texans are making but I think it is going a little too slow. We don't need to go crazy like the Redskins, but we don't need to sit on our asses like the Cardinals USUALLY do. Having Greenwood, Buchanon, and Johnson looks worse than having Sharper and Glenn.

Why were we not active in acquiring another good receiver to compliment Johnson so when we play the Colts twice a year and they roll a safety over in their cover 2 scheme to help on Johnson we would have another above average target for David Carr to hit. Jabar, Bradford, Mathis, and Armstrong are not adequate no 2 receivers in the NFL. Did the thought of giving Mike Williams a work out ever cross Casserly's mind? Trading up could have been a possibility. They talk about watching film. Did you not see that this was possibly the most dominating Wide Receiver as a Freshman and Soph in college football history? He was named Freshman of the year over Brad Smith, Larry Fitzgerald, and the player responsible for an Ohio State championship in Maurice. Just because Mike Williams didn't play one year he slipped. When Vick missed most of 03 was there any doubt that he would be able to come back? No, and he was injured. Williams just sat out. Mike Williams should have been the first player taken in the draft and will prove this down the road. Did the Texans think of taking him? No. Did the Texans even think about bringing in Plaxico or any other receiver for a look? No. Be prepared for the same offense as last year, able to move the ball, but not able to put it in the end zone consistently.

MCNAIR and CASSERLY: Is cutting Glenn really a cap move when we are nowhere near the cap or a way to put more money in the pockets of the higher ups? Cutting ties with Glenn when this team does not have cap trouble makes no sense to me, nor should it.

In conclusion, I am the least optimistic about the success of the Houston Texans this year than any of the previous three. The Playoffs are always the goal, but now more than ever. I do not believe they made the adequate moves to put themselves in the playoffs or at least in contention for the playoffs through week 17.

Agree or Disagree?

it was a 4th round pick. And how can u compare the team from last year to this year when u havent seen them play ? i wont judge until mid way through this season.

It is pretty much impossible to tell how we are going to do at this point. You cannot judge our teams ability next season by how their offseason went though. We have young players at key positions.. so the advancement of this team is more dependent on their growth than any FA or draft pick we add to the team.

Basicly what im saying is that our drafted players like Carr, Johnson, Davis, Robinson, and Babin.. will have a bigger effect on our abilities next season than the loss or gain of players during the offseason.

I think this next year.. our Offense is going to be top 10, but our defense will probably fall somewhere in hte 17th-20th range.. just from growing pains. We are gonna have alot of youth and inexperience on the defense, and that is gonna cost us a bit. But it is a necessary step to the growth of this team.

a top ten Offense and middle of the pack Defense is enough to make the playoffs.. but only if your lucky. So, playoffs are a possibility, but its 50/50.

Anyway.. the reason I think our Offense will be better is, despite what the chicken-littles are saying, LOGICALLY our offensive line will be alot better this next year. Not only will we have a returning Oline.. they will not be learning a new system anymore.. and the left side of our line will not be learning new positions. We have an entire season of tape to look at the mistakes our Oline was making and fix them.. and we also understand the need to protect Carr and will do things to make sure it happens. Also, our run blocking was rocking at the end of the season and I think it will continue into next season.

So yah.. top 10 offense. The defense.. theoretically.. could be a top 10 as well. I mean if you think about it.. Buchanan could actually be considered an UPGRADE of Glenn. I know we all love Glenn but Buchanan is a ball hawk and is very athletic. Additionally, Coleman will be returning and Earl will be in his second season. That is pretty exciting. We had an awesome secondary last season, and all signs point to it being even better this season, especially when you consider what we have done for our pass rush.

The speed upgrade to our LBs will make a big difference in our pass rush. Antwan Peek is a sack machine anyway.. now we get to have him in on every play! He is not the coverage guy that Wong is.. but Wong is a better coverage guy than Foreman.. so hopefully that will even out since Wong will be at ILB. Which.. btw.. may be our biggest intangible. I assume that it was Sharper calling the plays on defense for our front 7.. now whos it gonna be? Probably Wong.. can he handle that?

But anyway, I see people complaining that Greenwood isnt as good as Sharper. Well, take a look at is tackles.. he is actually pretty high up there in Tackles. So, we basicly got a guy with the same tackling ability, but much faster and better in Coverage. I think he is an UPGRADE over sharper. He doesnt have the big play ability (supposedly).. but that is fine.. the ILB in a 3-4 doesnt need to make big plays as much as the OLBs need to. Babin will be returning with an offseason under his belt to look at tape and work on his technique.. I think he is gonna be a beast.. Especially considering tha he is gonna be working behind either Robaire Smith or Travis Johnson. Smith was great last season while he was still learning the 3-4.. hes gonna be better this season. And Travis Johnson may be as big a pass rush threat as Babin and Peek are. Definatly a big upgrade to our Pass Rush and speed on Defense.. and that is gonna help our already dominating Secondary to be even better.

SO!!.. yah.. it is possible we could be a top 10 team on both sides of the ball if ya look at it through your homer glasses :). And that would pretty much assure us a spot in the playoffs.

I agree with grid, i also think they are sticking firm to a 5 year plan, so adding some youth to the defense, and clearning up potential cap space for 2006 seems important.

I feel that this year we will make a run but will have an obvious deficiancy that will probably knock us out in the wildcard game, we use our cap room gained from dumping sharper and glenn to fill that hole and are right there.

I am a season ticket holder since day one and will continue to be as I like the way the Texans have been growing organically, through the draft. From a return on investment standpoint we have gotten better every year and yes my expectations are an improvment on a 7-9 mark last year.

I will go see my first away games this year and know that I will be rooting for AJ, DR, DD, DC, JB, GE, SW, CP, JG AP, DF this year - all guys that the Texans drafted and all have the ability to be on the field at the same time.

I hate to see Glenn go, but the fact is it is time. He was a step slower, with a contract that needed him to be a step faster. The residual value of him being around to groom Dunta is a nice story, but I believe Hoke has his mark all over this new young secondary.

Bottom line is that we have goten better every year and CC and DC are not happy with 7-9 and are making moves to get better in the near term and the long term (salary cap).

You have to remember that most of the players being let go were expansion players they might not have been what CC wanted but were the only players or bpa at the time. Now with a few drafts we are seeing the kind of team CC and DC want the Texans to be.

I am baffled by this as well. It would have made sense to have better continuity in LB and secondary units. It makes no sense - financially or strategically - to make such a radical move toward youth unless its considering a rebuilding year on the defense. The one change I really wish they would have made on defense - letting Fangio go - hasn't been made.

Wow, I guess you could say that if you assume NO ONE improves. Let's dust for prints:

Robaire Smith- he was in his first season in a 3-4. He likely will get better as he has learned the scheme.

Seth Payne and Gary Walker- are one more year removed from major surgery.

TJ- He will provide better depth than what they have and might just supplant Walker if he doesn't improve.

Greenwood vs. Sharper- I liked Sharper too, but Greenwood is faster and a hard worker.

Wong vs. Foreman- Foreman was slow while Wong has good athleticism. This might be the position where we see the biggest upgrade.

Jason Babin- I remember reading somewhere (maybe here) that very few rookie OLBs have ever started for Capers. Greg Lloyd, Jason Gildon, et al all came off the bench in their rookie season. Babin played nearly every down, so he can only get better.

Antawn Peek- We should keep the above message in mind concerning Peek. He still might be the weak link of the defense, but he also has a chance to get at least ten sacks playing full-time.

Buchanon vs. Glenn- I also like Aaron Glenn, but he is 33 years old and making huge money. The most important thing is that we cannot afford a 5+ million (counting bonus) corner that is solid but not great. Ty Law is no longer a Patriot and he is better than Glenn. You save money where you can. I think this will end up being a wash.

Dunta Robinson- He picked it up in the second half. I think we can expect him to play all year like he did in the second half.

Glenn Earl- He played well enough to earn the starting spot in the second half. Ironically, we started to play better. I don't think he is the only reason, but he was an upgrade over Eric Brown.

Marcus Coleman- People forget this guy was a decent corner (helpful when playing the Colts) but he will be a better safety in year two.

So, there you have it. Maybe I'm a raving optimist, but I see improvement at nearly every position.

It makes a lot of sense to me. We had a chance this year to acquire a player that we might have needed to draft this year or next, probably with a first round pick. Glenn had maybe 1 or 2 years left in him and it had to be addressed. Maybe not now but soon. Now that need is taken care of with a 2nd round pick for someone who you know how well he performs in the NFL, whereas a 1st round pick CB has a small chance to be a bust. Sounds good to me.

That's a good point Steve. We can use our number 1 pick somewhere else now. I didn't see this coming either but I understand what they are doing. This unit has gotten younger and faster in both the front-7 and now in the secondary. If the Colts had anything on us it was speed.

They took a Center from AZ state in the 5th. Trading up was not an option. The F/O wanted to keep all their picks.

Does it? Do you know what our goal for this offseason was? Speed and youth. Id say we got both of them. Plus Sharper cant cover like Greenwood. Buchanon is 7 years or so younger than glenn, and faster. Plus he is cheap for 2 years. under a mil each year i think. And what is wrong with Johnson? Didnt we want help on the D-line? Well we got it.

The Front office did not want to trade up. Mike was gone. Get over it. Bradford will do this year, and we will move Mathis up to #2 next year.

Cutting Glenn is a 2006 move. It will allow us to take his 5 million cap hit for next year, and put it at zero with no hit of any kind. We can get 2 quality players for 5 million.

Yeah, like on the OL maybe. :hmmm:

Sharper, Foreman and Glenn were only going to be with us for 1 or 2 more years at most. Lets say or D finally started gel a bit this year. When you think about it, it makes no sense what so ever for our D to come together for 1 year then be torn apart. Now was the right time to make all of these moves.

The same could be said about Walker and Payne I suppose, but then we did take a DL with our first pick this year...

I completely disagree with you, what team were you watching last year. The texans i watched had a defense that was very bad. i here everyone talk about how they improved over the last few games, but look at who we played. Changes had to be made and i look forward to this year. AG was a great guy, but had a subpar year last year. He's not getting any younger. How many pro bowls has sharper been to with the texans? Would any of you who are so pssed off like to sell your psl and tickets? I'm looking for some extras.

I just hope these guys play with a chip on their shoulder. I think some of the players played too nice. We need people who want to hit someone in the mouth. I'm not talking hooligans, but guys that have a mean streak on the football field. I hope this kid from FSU plays that way as well as Greenwood. Although out of control sometimes, Peek was the only one who played that way. If he learns to play under control he can be really good.

I'm not too worried about Peek. He's going to make a name for himself this season. Personally I wish they played him more last year.

I couldn't agree more, I thought he and Wong should have been on the outside. I know I'm going to regret saying this, but Babin just didn't impress me. When Peek got in the game, he made plays. He just needs to cut down on the penalties. But the experts say that Babin will have a breakout year. Lets hope so.

From what little bit I would pay attention to Babin he was doing just fine. I didn't like the idea of Wong on the inside at first but I have come to like it. He made some good plays from that side. Remember when the lights went out in Reliant Stadium. I think it was him. :heh:

I normally chalk up a post like yaboycm's to a knee jerk reaction of a know nothing, but I have to say that I have to agree with a good bit of his rant. NOt all mind you, and I don't have time to break down every sentence, but his big points are true for the most part imo. Calling the AG move a salary cap issue is a joke, and that is all I will say about that. I find it funny that the same people that were saying that PB would probably be the nickel because AG was still a good CB, are now saying that AG is no good, and that he was on his way out anyway. Hilarious. This whole offseason has been a disaster imo, and has made me very

I would have liked to see AG and PB fight it out for the 2nd CB spot and get us 4 deep at the position. I expected us to start looking for replacements for Walker and Glenn soon, however. I knew Foreman was the weakest link on our team and needed to go. Really Sharper is the one move that surprised me this offseason.

I didn't like the way we handled Sharper or AG but it is better than the alternative... overpaying for players that don't give you good quality for their pay. Just look at the Astros. They are paying a guy (Bagwell) 25% of their total salaries and he can hardly contribute.

Right, but AG can still play. Comparing AG to Bagwell is not fair imo. Bagwell is finished. Period. True, AG may not be elite anymore, but if you toss a player everytime he moves from elite to just good, you're never going to get anywhere. It would be different if we were in cap hell, but we had the money to pay AG this year. They could have always cut him after June 1st if some stupendous signing was available. For the first time, I am really ticked, and haven't a clue where this franchise is going. Looks like straight to perputual medicocrity to me. As much as I like CC personally, he and the rest of the FO have made such a mess of this offseaon, I am ready to toss all of them to the wolves. :heh:

I think AG's play went from great to average over the past 2 years. We are getting rid of the guys that "carried the load" through the expansion era. We had the 16th ranked defense in 2002. Who were our starters?

Deloach, Payne, Walker
Wong, Foreman, Sharper, Posey
Coleman, Glenn, Brown, Stephens

We upgraded Stephens, Deloach and Brown over the past 2 years, yet our defense's production fell to the bottom of the league. Injuries definitely played a part in that, but it hints that some of these guys aren't as good as they were in 2002. It is clear who they thought a some of the culprits were, Glenn, Sharper, and Foreman.

Getting rid of the expansion players in general is fine, as we fill out, and upgrade our roster. But, AG was not expansion roster filler. You cannot compare AG, and most of the other expansion scrubs. My point is that we were told by CC himself, out of his own mouth, that the reason we gave up two first day picks was due to us trying to match up with the Colts and the other 3 WR sets of the world. That was the justification. And, to give us three solid corners, I felt the trade was worth it. Ask me now if the trade was worth it. :heh:

I want to know why G. Walker was not a casualty with the DT that were available during FA. We could have gotten faster and younger evenmoreso. I dont have a problem with TJ and I expect him to take GWs spot by mid-season, but I want his sorry *** gone also. We could be just waiting till June 1 cuts, but I also dont know his contract situation, it is pretty obvious that defense will be a huge priority in next year's draft. Wong, Walker, and some other depth will likely be gone. Hopefully we can keep Peek and DD since they are RFAs next season.

The Texans will be better this year. I can't wait to buy the NFL ticket again to catch all the games. Drafting Johnson left me scrathcing my head, but I didn't know about him. The more I hear it sounds like a good pick and we've has success in the 1st rnd. I'm worried we didn't upgrade the o-line, but they've all played together now and are hopefully working hard. The franchise has a new younger look, but are experienced and faster. Guys like Carr, AJ, Payne are going to be good leaders. It should be exciting.

I heard Aaron on 610 this afternoon. The most uplifting thing I heard him say was that this move was mutually agreed upon. He said both parties felt that it would be in BOTH their best interests, to part ways in this manner, at this time.

He went on to say that there were no angry conversations or hard feelings on either side's part. It was an amicable parting of ways. He said he feels like Faggins can start in this league, he hopes Buchanon is a good fit, and he hopes the Texans have a successful season.

Goodbye Aaron, and thanks for all the excitement you provided!!! texanpride

Yes, AG is a classy guy. But it was his decision to ask for his release. I wanted him to stay on for another year; obviously, he didn't want to stay. He thought it would be too crowded in CB rotation. ( He probably feared being cut and this way he can dictate the terms of his employment)

I don't think we should confuse the issue of the Buchanon trade with the issue of the Glenn release. In my view, the PB trade was a good move. Why/how Glenn was released was a different story, especially considering how the PB trade was explained to the public.

Regardless of whether Glenn SHOULD be gone, if it HAD to be done, I'm happy that they dealt with it quickly, for lots of reasons (cap management foremost). Much better than letting players hang for weeks.

You should, we all should. do you think if they had kept all their picks and taken a quality CB in the 2nd or 3rd round for AG to groom he would be packing his bags less than a week afterwords? Aaron is one classy individual, but he is also a competitor & wants to be the starter for as long as he thinks he is capable.

It was shocking to me that Casserly aquired such an established malcontent from a character standpoint. I'm convinced the Texans fell in love with PB in 2002 but could not draft him for obvious reasons. I could'nt say just how much NFL players know their peers but its possible that Gleen was not pb's biggest fan.

Gee, maybe because Buchanon was a failure in Oakland, a quitter, and head case? And he replaces a guy with total class and dedication. And then some of you claim Buchanon is BETTER than Glenn. He may be a tad bit fast and younger, but that's 2 categories out of 20.

Glenn and Buchanon both got dusted a lot last year. Glenn will have a better career than Buchanon, but Buchanon will be at least as good as Glenn going forward. I'm disappointed that Glenn left here to be a backup elsewhere. If he would have gone somewhere that he could start, I could have understood. I guess it is easier to go into a situation as the nickel back then to be demoted on your current team.

I wish him well. He was the face of our defense for the first 3 years.

Speaking of character issues, somebody came into my shop that knew an acquaintance of a currentTexans DL. He said that maybe one of the reasons (with the salary cap being the main one) that Sharper was let go was that is was said to be a malcontent in the locker room. When you have a negative attitude in your locker room, it only spreads that cancer throughout the roster. With Sharper's comments towards the end of year about the team needing "leadership", which he, as a veteran member of the defense should have provided, this might have a secondary factor in #55 being let go.

Porky, I know this has been stated many places and many times. The Glenn release was more about him wanting out than the organization wanting out. He's said it. The team has said it. He has pride and believes he can still start. He could very well have started here, but the smart move is getting Buchanon in the starting rotation. He's the CB for the future.

Who on this site honestly felt this was a Super Bowl caliber team with the same defense as last season? The team has improved each year and there is no reason to think they can't do so again. They've actually won a couple of games when they were losing (Tennessee, KC). They won by good margins in a couple of games (Jax, Oak). They held strong against playoff teams (Minn, GB). This team was designed to be a strong playoff performer in 2006. I would rather see a nucleus of young talented players that the team has drafted and developed become a force than to sign a bunch of aging vets and keep guys around too long to try and win early. Look at Carolina. After their remarkable second season they went to the bottom of the league.

I just hope fans don't start treating the Texans like they do the Astros and Rockets. Go to the games, support the players that are on the field.

all these offseason moves imo will benefit the texans more in 2006 than 2005. let's look at 2005 coming up. how many rookie starters you think we'll have on offense and defense starting the season? probably none for the first time in club history. this is a good thing i believe, look at the yop teams in the league and see how many rookies they have starting. very few if any. from now on we can draft players and not expect them to start right away. they can play 2nd or 3rd string, learn the system, and come in and contribute as we release other older players. i also think Gaffney will have a better year coming into his 4th year. i'm also thinking alot of guys we've drafted over the years will just keep getting better. peek, wells, gaffney, earl, wand finally have some years under their belt and should only improve.

Yeah but you added Greenwood (trust me we had to see him twice a year and were glad he is gone) and PB who just needs some good coaching. Throw Peek in at MLB, Babin at OLB, and Greenwood at OLB and you got yourself one hell of a LB corps. Although I hope the Texans get rid of that damn 3-4, man that blows.
