Kevin Burnett Interest (visiting 3/5)

HoustonFrog

Dallas Frog
I read this today....no visit but interest. Guy has a ton of talent from watching him in Dallas but he had injury problems too.

http://cowboysblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2009/03/kevin-burnett-talking-to-raiders-and-cha.html

Free agent linebacker Kevin Burnett is in discussions with Oakland and San Diego according to his agent Ricky Lefft. Burnett is in San Diego right now trying to work a deal but if it doesn't work out there's the Raiders.

Now, the Packers and Texans have also expressed interest in Burnett but no visits have been scheduled with those teams.

Burnett has been a 3rd down LBer and special teamer. IMO, he has pretty good athletic qualities, but for whatever the reason never really seemed toget much a shot to be an everydown player in Dallas. In terms of depth player with some upside, he is at least worth a look.

I think he's in the wrong system. He never seemed quite right for the 3-4 Dallas runs. I'd say he's certainly worth a look.

I wonder if he could give Diles a run for his money. Not sure he would be worth it though, I imagine he will get a decent amount of money from someone and Diles is so cheap right now.

Yeah, you're exactly right. He came out of Tennessee, which ran a 4-3 scheme. He's more suited to play in a 4-3 scheme. He has tremendous size and speed, and was a helluva player for the Vols. I'd like for the Texans to pick him up. It would be another solid signing this offseason.

The Texans are bringing in Dallas Cowboys linebacker Kevin Burnett for a visit today.

Burnett, 26, is an unrestricted free agent who has been a reserve linebacker in the Cowboys' 3-4 during his four-year career. A second-round pick from the University of Tennessee in 2005, Burnett played outside linebacker his first two years and inside linebacker his last two seasons. He had four starts the last two seasons and posted a career-best two sacks last season.

The Texans are looking for depth at outside linebacker. The versatility of Burnett, 6-3, 242, is appealing to the coaches

Sounds good to me. We can always use some quality backups. Don't know much about Burnett but hope he's exactly that (for us)!

His draft scouting report from SI.
BIO: Three-year starter and All-Conference selection who posted 120/6/1 as a senior. Team captain the past two years.

POSITIVES: Explosive defender who forces the action. Fast moving laterally, quick closing on the play and makes his presence felt. Gets depth on pass drops displaying outstanding range and collapses well from the outside defending the run. Breaks down well, plays with balance and rarely off his feet. Disciplined, does not bite the play action and takes good angles to ballcarriers. Occasionally placed over the slot receiver and does an admirable job. Defeats blocks and gets through the trash making the tackle.

NEGATIVES: Previous injuries include reconstructive surgery on his left knee in October of 2002. Does not always remain focused and mentally hesitant.

ANALYSIS: A tenacious, sideline-to-sideline defender, Burnett is a naturally gifted athlete with improved instincts. Lacks the great size, yet has shown consistent improvement in all areas of his game and could be the next productive NFL linebacker to come from the Tennessee program.

PROJECTION: Early Second Round

He ran a 4.61 forty at 240 lbs, so acquiring him would make him our fastest and second biggest LB. From reading his report, Burnett seems like a team leader, smart player, discipline tackler, and a pretty good coverage guy. He might be able push Adibi or Diles for one of their spot, and might even come cheap since he has yet to produce real well in the NFL.

He probably didn't produce well in Dallas because he didn't fit their 3-4, same with Carpenter. He potentially have the ability to be a real surprise for us a LB.

What was his production in Tennessee?

Overall: Burnett came to Tennessee as a free safety, but was moved to linebacker midway through his true freshman season in 2000. He started two games in 2001 and was set to become the Vols' fulltime starting "weakside" linebacker in 2002 before tearing his ACL, which required reconstructive knee surgery and cost him the entire 2002 season and 2003 spring practice. As a junior in 2003, Burnett started all 13 games and finished with 77.5 total tackles, 7.5 TFL and 1.5 sacks. Burnett made a wise decision to return for his senior season in 2004 because it gave him time to fully recover and regain his speed and explosiveness. He finished 2004 with 120 tackles, six TFL, one sack and one INT. Burnett is a terrific athlete with good size and even better speed. He is excellent in coverage, has very good range in run support, and also shows good ...

Thanks for help with research as it is busy at work. Seems like he may be a good addition. How many LBs do we go with? 5?

np. We keep six LBs on the roster last year, so I'm presuming it would be the same again. If we pick up Burnett and draft another LB that means we have to cut two, me guessing it'll be Coley and Thompson. Of course they would battle it out first in TC.

If a couple are really good on special teams, 7 is not even really out of the question.

ILB DeMeco Ryans - 3 seasons
OLB Xavier Adibi - 1 season
OLB Zac Diles - 2 seasons
OLB Kevin Bently - 7 seasons

LB Kevis Coley - 2 seasons
LB Chaun Thompson - 6 seasonst

So Chaun Thompson would be the odd man out. He is a FA after this year and the cap hit is not all that significant.

Salary - $1 million
Bonus - $375,000

This guy was great in coverage & and a good blitzer off the edge it was tough getting time with all of the good linebackers in dallas but i definately think that he is a good fit for the texans.

Burnett must have some heck of a drive to come back from not one, but bilateral major ACL reconstructionsseparated by a couple of years. He seems to have remained major injury free since 2005, while showing consistently solid play as a misfit in the Dallas system. II say, make him a Texan if the cost is reasonable. If he comes in as an OLB, there won't the question or contreversy over where we position Demeco.

Any word on his visit with us yesterday? Or is he doing the routine get The Texans to make me an offer for leverage thing?

Burnett in Houston: Kevin Burnett's free agency path took him to Houston on Thursday as the inside linebacker continues to search for a good deal. He's also received interest from Washington and Green Bay.

Free agent safety and special teams standout Keith Davis will spend the next two days in Kansas City, according to his agent. Several teams have expressed interest but no other visits have been finalized.

I read in Chron that Burnett didn't sign. Does this mean he isn't going to sign or elected to weigh his options first?

It's hard to say from what little the Chron said. It could be that Burnett wants to see if somebody offers him a starting spot, or more money, or...who knows.

The quick signing part of free agency is over, most guys will know explore all of their options before signing.

I think GB is going to ink him. They can make him a starter.

I think if he got an offer from Smith it was not what he hoped for and wants to explore options. I am ok with this.

I think that might be a possiblility for him.

I agree. Even if he was offered a decent contract and a starting spot (not that I am saying he was) he might still go and hear what some other clubs might be offering. It's what I would do.

I thought Burnett was a 3-4 ILB and a 4-3 OLB? Where would he fit as a with GB when they have A.J. Hawk and Nick Barnett inside? I think he is looking for a starting gig and so far everyone, including us and soon to be including GB, views him as a depth signing that will have to compete.

Personally, Glass half full....Sidbury or Barwin is going to drop into our laps. We're going to grab one of them with a three. And for the rest of my natural life I'll get to read and contemplate the volume of people on the board who will post they knew it all along.

McClain said on the radio yesterday that they're not going to sign him. Oh well. He would have been solid depth.

He's very versatile so I'm guessing he could have played any of the LB positions. Who knows, maybe he enjoyed his visit in Houston enough to come here - but I bet he at least wants a shot at starting.

Yes, but did McClain say why he won't sign here?

McCalin seems to think that why is never that imporant. Also did he mean that Burnett won't sign here now (as he wants to make other visits/search for a starting spot) or won't sign here under any circumstances (which would lead one to believe that something wierd happened during his visit).

He wasn't specific. I just assume it's because there are other competitors who will offer more than what the Texans will pay.

McChin is very good at those type of answers. I see all the time in his blog someone ask a question about a player and his response will be No without any elaboration.

Just wait a week, McClain will guarantee he'll be a Texan. Then he will wag his finger saying he is smarter than us.
