Frank Bush's New Philosophy For The D

It is a short story but a good one. He wants to be more a pain for the other team and I like the new mind set he brings here.

I like that he wants to cause havic.

Actually, there is one thing that concerns me. This team keeps spending first round picks on D-Linemen and the results haven't been what we hoped. I'm not saying we shouldn't get a first round DE, but it concerns me that the team may be helped even more by a move that it's much less likely to make--like getting a ball-hawking FS or a serious, shut-down CB. I know that some of the problem is (or may be) the players specifically chosen with those picks in the past (TJ is the most notable). I think I might disagree with blaming the players. For one thing, I don't think TJ plays the right position and I think we're too small overall in the middle.

Most of all, I just think that we may be focusing too much on how fast we can get to the QB and not enough on how long he has to wait for a receiver to get open (if there even is a wait). We also don't get enough interceptions and I know that many of us have seen stats recently posted showing (although it may be arguable) that a better pass rush doesn't necessarilly equate to more of those kinds of turnovers.

I guess we still could really use a first round DE that can get after QBs. I just generally would like to see this team focus more on the secondary in the future. Maybe D-Rob AND Bennett will perform outstandingly in the future. Maybe not. That still leaves the safeties.

Well unfortunately there are no real ball-hawk FS's in the draft that would be worth spending a 1st on that I can see. The CB's also don't really blow me away (Vontae? Davis is somebody I would like the Texans to shy away from). Being in the middle of the draft means that you can't really pick and choose what great players you'll have a chance at. Hopefully Smith can pull some magic and get us more players than 6 or 7 in the draft.

With the DL being taken, you also have to remember that it went Travis Johnson, then we changed regime's and defensive philosophies, Mario who is a stud, and then Okoye who looked underwhelming last year. TJ probably won't make a contract extension and we might not see what Okoye can really do until next year or possibly even the year after (remember, he's about as young as you can go draft wise). If the best player available at our pick is a DE or a DT, and we can't trade, then go ahead and pick em I say. They do fill a need.

I was hoping Smith would be fired last offseason and the Texans would hire Singletary. Good character guy that doesn't take any crap and knows how to motivate his players and get the absolute most out of them. But as usual the Texans waited painfully long to cut him loose.

I hope Bush can be a good dc and bring this defense up to at least a respectable level. He better have a shorter leash than Smith did because he has the advantage of having been here the previous 2 years. I don't really care what is said about Bush's new scheme because all new dc say the same things. I just hope he translates the talk to the field. Heres to hoping Bush can be the man the Texans need as dc. In the end I don't care who is coaching as long as we see definate improvement. No excuses.

Frank wants to bring an agressiveness to the defense. Sounds vaguely familiar. I hope he can actually do that as opposed to Smith.

I hope he does not make the same mistake Smith did with our DTs. Aside from Frank Okam they are mostly on the small side but have speed. Hopefully they take a page or two from the NY Giants DL. They aren't a bunch of space hogging run stuffers but they shoot gaps and collapse the pocket for the DEs. That is what our DTs should be doing as trying to hold the LOS. I think they might have well brought in the right guy in Kollar who wants his DL playing in opponents backfields as opposed to the LOS.

I have a feeling we'll see the Fred Bennett we saw in his rookie year as opposed to the one that struggled last year. Can't say enough how pleased I am to have Hoke out of our secondary and Gibbs and Rhodes coaching the secondary. Would like to see if Molden is worth the third round investment or if he's another one of our small school meteors. Burns bright for a short time then crashes. Interesting if we'll see Dunta back, but I have a good feeling that both sides can reach some sort of agreement that won't break the bank. If we can get Reeves' head turned consistantly in coverage he won't be as bad as some make him out to be.

Will be interesting to see the role that Diles plays after he gets healthy again. I like him but I'd like him better in our depth chart. Speed at the LB, or lack of, has been killing us in the past. While a lot of people will rightfully so point to Dunta's return keying better defensive play I'd have to say that Greenwood getting injured and inserting Adibi in the lineup made just a big difference. It's possible we'll see another FA or two added this offseason and if one of the better LBs drop to us we'll likely scoop them up. Wonder if Dansby gets the Tag on him again. If not I think Bush knows him enough to have the FO make a good bid especially with our cap space this off-season.

One thing really is for sure. Bush has a load of work to do with this defense.

I do not think we'll have to worry about this or at least I hope not.

I appreciate the link Gary. It is slow times around here because of the offseason and we all want some news.

That is kind of why I posted the link because it is slow around here.

I was doing some research concerning other teams needs & the draft for a Mock Draft & noticed teams have become tight lip about talking to media (trying to keep that competitive edge) so news becomes nothing more than idle banter & function of message boards like this one

This has beeen my motto for the defense for the last few years "For the Love of God, please stop someone on third down." and last year..."for the love of God.. stop someone on fourth down."

If they can do that I am good......if they can stop a fat slow qb from getting a 4th and 8 and prevent overtime...I am stoked (this means you amobi).

If they get rid of Petey "Big Play" Faggins we win the freaking division.

A run stuffer in the middle as well and get Reevs to turn his head around and look for the football every once in a while would be nice.

The Giants don't have run stuffing behemoths with their DTs. They are in fact pretty close(weight and size) to Amobi and Travis Johnson. I'm not opposed to a big runstuffing DT and we could have two if we draft one this year and see production from Frank Okam. Just saying that it makes much more sense with our DTs to have them shooting gaps, penetrating, and disrupting plays with speed as opposed to playing them as stand up DTs.

You're right on Reeves though if the staff can get Reeves to consistantly turn his head and look for the ball we woudln't be terribly off. That said he was still the most productive CB on our staff this year(overall).

I'm frustrated of years of drafting guys, trading, or signing guys that are consistantly put in situations or schemes that don't fit their strengths. If nothing else from Frank Bush and the staff I'd like to see them select guys that can use their strengths and talents in what we're trying to do instead of signing them and trying to hide them because they don't fit what we do( or have tried, supposedly, under Smith).

Not trying to be a pessimist here but i can remember Richard Smith saying almost the SAME THING when he took over as DC. Something to the tune of "Our defense wont be complex, but it will be aggressive."

The talent is there. When Smith realized his job was in jeopardy, he started dialing up 6 and 7 man blitzes that worked wonders. If Bush commits to blitzing i think he'll be fine.

And I really wonder if Kubiak sat down with Richard Smith and said, "This is what I want from the defense..." And to get the job, Smith said that's exactly what his defense was going to provide. And then Smith goes in front of the media and gives some speeches about how aggressive his defenses are going to be. Yadda yadda.

So now Bush comes along and he knows Kubiak's buzzwords about what he wants from a defense and says the same stuff that Smith said back in the day.

I'll believe we have that sort of defense when I see that defense on the field.

Remember that Smith was hired to coach LBs only. When AZ wouldnt let Bush out of his contract, he promoted Smith. The big mistake was signing him to a long term contract. As soon as Bush was available they should've given smith the boot.

Our DT's moving around more that is what I hope to see done under Bush no more of this standing around garbage.
