We got our speedster in Jerome Mathis

Are you kidding me?!?! How did he fall that far to us?! I'm totally stoked with this pick. The kid is a burner. I'm lovin this draft so far. :headbang:

Hell yes Baby. I knew Cass had it in him. We are back in this draft. Now we need to make a trade and grab Antaj Hawthorne or Chris Kemoeatu, or CJ Moseley. Man I am thrilled with this pick it is frickin great. JJ Moses, Bradford, Swinton they can all go find new jobs we just got a baller.

I love this pick. it is freaking awesome. I am totally thrilled that we got this kid and he will be a dynamo in the slot and special teams. I think we need to trade back into this round to get an Interior lineman or a DL.

I think we need interior O-Line help more than another receiver, but with that said, I really like Mathis' potential and I think with a little work, he can end up being a good receiver...Didn't he run a sub-4.3 40?

It does ease the pain a little, but we did lose Elton Brown who I thought we should have taken in the third.

I agree except Swinton. That kid can ball too. He's been doin work since he's been here. Mathis has been in the league for about 5 mins now.

D-Rek are we thinkin Chris K. or maybe CJ Moseley or Hawthorne for the D-Line. I am excited now. Swinton is little more than a journeyman that has done nothing. I think he will be good as a gunner on special teams but not a threat at the kick return spots. I wish he could switch and play corner though because his footwork and hips are nice.

I don't think we would take Hawthorne, but I'd love to have Kemoeatu, Jason Brown, or Ben Wilkerson...I wouldn't be against using a 5th and maybe a 6th to get back into the fourth...

Jerome Mathis WR Hampton 5’11 181
By: Robert Davis
www.footballsfuture.com They Had Him High Second Round Pick to Titans!

One of the fastest risers of late, Jerome Mathis is a name everyone needs to know. There may not have been a better playmaker at wide receiver in college the past few seasons. As a sophomore in 2002, Mathis made a name for himself by catching 24 passes for 615 yards and 3 touchdowns. That's an average of over 25 yards per catch. He also ran the ball 20 times for 188 yards on the ground. In 2003, he caught 40 passes for 977 yards and 9 touchdowns. He save the best for last though, as this past season he upped his average per catch to over 29 yards a grab. He caught 29 passes for 864 yards and 9 touchdowns. The best numbers though, were his kick return numbers. He averaged 35.5 yards per kick return with an amazing 5 for touchdowns. His 6 career return touchdowns set a NCAA record. Mathis also doubled as a track star, as he was a two time NCAA East Regional 200m champ.

Mathis is the most exciting player in this draft. Give him the ball and watch him come up with something out of nothing. He averaged over 25 yards per catch during his career, over 9 yards per carry, and over 25 yards per kick return. He accelerates in and out of cuts very quickly, and gets to second gear immediately. He brings instant impact ability as a kick returner.

Playing for Hampton creates questions about the talent he faced in college. He did not face top corners on a consistent basis, so it’s going to be a switch when he gets to the NFL. He’s going to need some time to develop his skills and adjust to the big leap in talent. He may be a project at receiver, but should make an impact on special teams immediately.

Mathis first started making waves as a potential first rounder during the Gridiron Class in January. He had two receptions for 59 yards, two rushes for 49 yards, and added 35 yards on his lone kick return. He only solidified himself as a borderline first rounder after he turned in a blazing 40 time of 4.32 at the combine, which some say may have been the fastest in the combine’s history. Some teams are going to be scared off by his lack of polish as a receiver, but his playmaking ability is going to entice someone to call his name within the Top 50 of the draft in April. :thumbup

ANALYSIS

Positives: Has a lean, tightly muscled frame with a thin waist (built for speed) … Shows good strength to release vs. press coverage, using his hands effectively, combined with sudden acceleration to avoid the jam … Does a good job of maintaining balance along the sidelines … Has the second gear needed to separate in the open … Will body catch, but does not drop many balls … Not the type who will shy away from contact, showing aggression, leaping ability and timing to combat for the ball in flight … Does a very good job of tracking the ball in over his shoulders and has the hip wiggle and shake to easily elude defenders after the catch … Shows the ability to come back quickly for the under-thrown pass and displays crisp stop-and-go action … Unlike most sprinters, he has more than only straight-line acceleration … He is active with his hands to maintain separation with the defender and is adept at executing double moves to elude … Very effective running deep routes, posts and verticals, as he has the pure speed to win any foot race … Gives good effort and stays to fight when asked to block at the line of scrimmage.

Negatives … Has made improvements in using his hands to assist in his release, but needs to run crisper routes, especially in the short area, where he rounds his cuts and looks sluggish coming out of his breaks … Must work on maintaining concentration on the ball, as he has dropped a few easy tosses because he looks to run before securing the ball … Double catches the ball quite a bit, letting it absorb into his body and needs to show better hand extension to catch away from the body's frame … Well-liked and a hard worker, but had two off-field incidents (assault), with one leading to a conviction.

INJURY REPORT
No injuries reported.

AGILITY
4.28 in the 40-yard dash … 2.51 20-yard dash … 1.53 10-yard dash … 35.5-inch vertical jump … 10'1" broad jump … 32 5/8-inch arm length … 9 3/8-inch hands … Right-handed … 19 Wonderlic score.

Its a great pick. I expect Kiper to applaud us in a moment considering he had Mathis as one of the top 50 players in the draft. WR was a need in my opinion...More so because of Bradford...Not Gaffney.

Look, I love this pick, but am I the only person wondering about our O-Line? I hope some of these late round picks are gems because Carr could end up getting killed back there. All the WRs in the world wont help if he doesn't have time to throw it.

how do u think a rookie OL comin out of college is goin to help carr from being sacked. each year we've put rookie OL on the line and look where its gotten us. the only thing i wanna know it wat happened b/w 03 and 04 we went from 15 sacks to 49....now tell me wats wrong with that picture?

I didnt love the TJ pick and didnt really like the RB pick, but this pick redeems them both! :thumbup The guy ran a 4.28 40! thats some Randy Moss type speed right there! Now if only he could catch the football

I am a big believer that the longer an OL plays together the better they are. Our line has been in constant flux since we came into the league. This could be the first year the same five guys start who started last year. While I'd like to see one pick on the OL this year...I always like to see at least one pick in a draft for a line where you have 5 guys.

Fastest Guy In the NFL Draft Hands Down! Biggest Sleeper in the NFL Draft HAnds Down! Set All NCAA Records Hands Down!! Should of been a Locked in the High Seconds Hands Down!! BEst Value pick to go in the fourth round Hands Down! Best Texans pic so far! We Damn Lucky Thanks Denver! :thumbup

im liking this pic..dood is fast and hes got the juke!im going to try and find some vid on mathis and i'll post the link up!

Im hoping he can take over the # 2 wr job by midseason. That may be wishful thinking though. But, im really excited that we now have a gamebreaking kr. After aquiring PB and JM we now have a pr and kr that can take it to the house at any given moment for the first time in franchise history!!! :woot

With PB and Mathis... man, we got the best kick Returner.... Punt Returner.. Just the Best Tadem in the league now... Watch Out! we'll avg on the 35 every time carr them step on the field! :thumbup

I guess you never heard of Jermaine Lewis...True, he sucked here, but he had that "game-breaker" tag stuck on him...

Hey do yall think he'll be able to still be a gamebreaker even though he's from a small school competition like Hampton? He looks FAST but Im just wondering....

FWIW a Kiper mock just last month had our 4th rounder going to the Eagles
in the "first round" ! Maybe this is our 2005 DD ?

31. Philadelphia Eagles: Jerome Mathis, WR, Hampton
Played at the Division I-AA level in college but showed at the Gridiron Classic and the combine he belongs with the big boys. He dominated Hampton's playoff game this season and was the best player on the field at the Gridiron thanks to his overall athleticism.

How can we take this kid when Tony Jeffrey is still on the board. Drafting him would have put more fans in the seats.

If they were worried about that they would have drafted DJ.

D-Rek, you're right about Jermaine. Im just hoping that we'll have some gamebreakers that produce for the TEXANS for the first time in franchise history.

Winning games and making it to the playoffs will also put more fans in the seats. . . I like this approach better than throwing in a fan favorite.

I guess the smiley did not properly portray my tongue-in-cheek attitude to a similar post made earlier about Derrick Johnson putting more fans in the seats.

Derrick Johnson is a nice player, but not what we needed now. I like the Mathis pick. We need someone to stretch the field.

Did Jermaine run a 4.28 40? Mathis has excellent speed. The Texans were not kidding about adding speed to the D. I didn't think they were going to do it to the offense.

WOW! I can't believe Mathis slipped this far. If we can grab a quality OL in the 5th, this draft will look very nice :thumbup I LOVE the Mathis pick!!!!

That's a pretty freakin' good idea! That's something to think about. He's got great feet and hands aren't half bad. When he was a WR with the Cowgirls, his route running wasn't as crisp as it should be. Now that you mention it, I would be totally down with the switch. Good job Cadahnic!!

Keith from hpf tells me he is a better prospect than Starling is. I'm more excited about him as I talk to others as well. He looks like a nice player to take Bradford's spot on the outside at least by 2006 when Bradford is gone.

All I can say is WOW!

I'm another one who is amazed that Jerome Mathis slipped this far. Can anyone say Derrick Mason? He was also a 4th rounder, BTW.

WR's take a while to develop. Bradford is a good bandaid for 2005 until Mathis is ready in 2006. I like this pick.

I wonder if Morresy (sp?) is too similar to DD in terms of style. I guess we don't sign the A-train now?

I like TJ as a pick. I did wonder if we traded down if he would be considered. The D-line needed an infusion of youth. Over the past two years we have added one 1st rounder each in the D-line, LB's, and secondary. Throw in the trade for Buchanon, signings of Greenwood and Robaire Smith (2004), and drafting of Earl (2004 4th) and you can see we are totally remaking our defense with most of the emphasis on speed and youth. I really want to see what Wong does at LILB and Peek does at ROLB.

I think we could still draft an ILB, interior lineman, TE, and/or DE. We might even take a CB since this is a deep draft for that position. Remember if we cut Aaron Glenn (likely) we could use a quality dime back. I think the QB streak ends this year (knock on wood).

I am so loving the Mathis pick! :thumbup Amazing speed-4.28! Randy Moss ran a 4.25! Not saying hes gonna be the next Randy Moss, but he WILL stretch the defense for us. I dont think he will start at #2, but he will earn the #2 spot by the end of the year or begining of next. With Mathis stretching the defense it will help AJ get open ALOT easier! This is, if Mathis works on his hands in the preseason.
