Dan Reeves to Dallas....

I wonder if he's going to recommend that Jerrah sign David Carr to an extension?

REEVES TO DALLAS LOOKS TO BE A DONE DEAL

One of the great things about Radio Row is that the room attracts plenty of people who have access to plenty of NFL rumors.

And though this one isn’t much of a shock, we’ve heard enough to conclude that Dan Reeves will very soon be joining the Dallas Cowboys as a Bill Parcells or Floyd Reese-style consultant.

Chris Mortensen of ESPN first reported the possible move earlier this week.

It doesn’t mean that the Cowboys will fire coach Wade Phillips, especially since Phillips and Reeves have worked together extensively in the past.

It also doesn’t mean that owner Jerry Jones will listen to anything that Reeves has to say, if it conflicts in any way with that which Jones already wants to hear

I vote for option (b

didn't go too far as Reeves is apparently already quitting after just two days. you just can't make this stuff up...

A source confirmed Wednesday afternoon that Dan Reeves left the organization.

Reeves official hire, or role with the organization was never formally announced, but we're told he had an office at the Cowboys complex and had been working directly with Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones.

The source said, "there were issues."

Reeves apparently quit over a philosophical issue with Jones.

Jerry wanted him to help with the coaching staff...he didn't want to.

So there you go.

Porbably wanted him to keep TO.

I'm peeved. You can hear the pride in Reeves comments...someone my Boys need and Jerry fails him.

"My heart starts beating when I see that star on the helmet and the pictures of the players I started with in the game," Reeves said. "I just can't get those first 16 years of my career out of my system."

"I thought the thing was done, and we finally agreed on what the title was going to be," Reeves said. "I didn't want to have a coaching title and not have authority coaching-wise. I wanted to work with him [Jones] and Wade and help in any way that I possibly could. We finally agreed the coaching thing wouldn't be in there, but then the contract changed and there were some things in there I couldn't see being in there, and they were important to him. He made a lot of concessions, but this was something that was important to him, and I just didn't feel like I could live with it. So it didn't make sense for us to go forward

I'm not sure if it was coaching in general though. I think it was more the scope of what his executive decisions would be....GM type work.

Reeves preferred an executive title with broader authority.

Ya know... if Jerrah would just sit back a bit and be an "owner", hire / keep the quality people (Jimmy.... Tuna... Dan....) the Cowboys may have a better recent history, probably more continuous fans which leads to more money for Jerrah.

But, Jerrah wants to be it all with a "yes man" coach and the big names and drama.

I heard it on a streamed radio station so I don't know too much...it doesn't matter to me one way or the other really. Although I've always like Coach Reeves.

I'm just reading up on it and was speculating on the GM type work. You were probably right in the coaching since he wants Wade to succeed and he used to be under him in Denver and Atlanta. I just thought this was a positive step. Of course it could have been a step for Jerry to cover his ass and start blaming bad decisions on the new guy.

This is a DARK day for the Cowboys. I have been an ardent Jones supporter but he has really run the franchise into the ground in Dallas. Reeves was no savior but at least he was someone that Jerry seemed willing to listen to. Lord knows Jerry and his son have screwed the pooch. Reeves and his abrupt resignation are symptomatic of Jerry's inability to listen to anyone anymore.

The best thing for the Cowboys to do would be to trade/release Owens and just bite the bullet. He is truly a cancer and the whole Hollywood-Reality TV act is not going to help them win football games. Go back to being a defensive minded team with a good running game and the ability to convert on 3rd down with an efficient passing game. It's obvious you can't ask Romo to be 'the man'. Dude pretty much sucks without Parcells around. Just sayin.

I am all for the Cowboys just cutting Owens and screw his whole show up. Sadly, it would probably only increase the interest in his 'show'....but when one final roster spot is a reality show winner, what do you expect? It's like some convoluted version of the Jackie Sherrill 12th Man, truly a great piece of A&M folklore, albeit somewhat brief.

Stephen answers to Jerry and probably had nothing to do with this. In fact almost all the sports writers in Dallas say when he takes over he will have a totally different approach to running the team than Jerry does. I can only hope!

They should cut TO. Will they? Some say behind closed doors it's being discussed. I'm kinda thinking they won't but should.

Wouldn't it cost them out the poop chute to cut to? I think I heard Shefter say that at one time or another. In other words, they're screwed. Now they have an up and coming mouth in Roy W. :gun:

Cowboy news? I'm sorry I couldn't hear it clealy over the sound of the Sixburgh Steelers Lombardi trophys all falling over.

:trophy::trophy::trophy::trophy::trophy::trophy:

Must be good to be Mr. Rooney...

It will cost them but they can do it in March I believe and it will cost them less than doing it now. Many say this will hamper resigning a guy like Ware. But many of us think that it would be wasting a season if you just let him stay and cause problems. You might as well see what you have in Roy and go with the other guys. I think this mentally helps Romo too.

Congrats to a fine team but I don't really think making fun of a team because they have 5 SB trophys and not 6 is really that effective...I'll take the 5 for now. :)

It was an "hours clause" that caused the friction. Seriously...you couldn't drop this Jerry?....later in this article Ray Lewis talks about joining Dallas

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/stories/020609dnspocowreeves.413368b.html

Dan Reeves said he objected to having a clause put in his contract about the amount of hours he was to work at Valley Ranch.

Thus, his employment with the Cowboys was short-lived.

Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones and Reeves agreed in principle to a multi-year deal that was supposed to start Monday, but the former Cowboys assistant coach and player did not know about the clause.

"Oh, definitely, big-time," Reeves said when asked if he was surprised by the clause. "For someone to question how I've done [my time] for a lot of years, I've never been questioned. Plus, as a coach, how can you verify that? Nobody punches a clock."

When Reeves said he couldn't sign such a contract, he and Jones declined to work together.

Each expressed respect, a fondness for one another and a desire to work together in the future if an opportunity arises.

Jones said he and Reeves were on the same page about commitment hours-wise, but the Cowboys owner wanted it in writing.

"You don't work 23 years in this business whatsoever without some kind of work ethic," Reeves said. "To me, why would you want it in there? A contract should be like a handshake anyway."

Reeves said he was going to work with all aspects of the organization – specifically with Jones, head coach Wade Phillips and the offensive coaches.

Reeves started work Monday, attended meetings and was in the process of looking at the passing game.

"It didn't work out," Jones said. "It's a sticking point for both of us and we both regret it, but it just didn't work out."

I'm just messin' with you guys man! Just cause I don't LIKE the Cowboys...doesn't mean I don't respect them.

I don't know the specifics and I'm not where I can look it up but certainly they would take a fairly sizable cap hit.

I know. You can make fun of Jerry all you want though. Right now, he is making me more and more fearful that he is going to run the ship aground

http://cowboysblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2009/02/jerry-jones-speaks.html

Jerry Jones called into ESPN 103.3's Galloway and Co. in an effort to try to clear up what went wrong with Dan Reeves' return to Valley Ranch.

"We may not be on the same page regarding the type of commitment that we're talking about here," Jerry Jones said of the sticking point in the contract negotiations with Reeves. Jerry referred to it as a "time element."

That contradicts what Reeves said earlier today.

"I fully intended and told them that I would work," Reeves said. "It was a full-time job. A full-time job to me means that you work as long as it takes to get the job done."

Jerry made it clear that the Reeves departure was not about a control battle. And Jerry made it clear that no coach/consultant/executive has ever or will ever get ultimate control as long as he's roaming the Valley Ranch hallways.

"Not one time with any head coach in 20 years does anyone have an authority to hire a football player, fire a football player, draft a football player, hire a coach, an assistant coach," Jerry said. "In 20 years, not one coach has ever had it. I've always had it. I want to make that clear."

Someone alert Jimmy and Parcells to this face. He is taking credit again.

Jerry never changes. He never will. I still find it a bit amusing that after 20 years or whatever people think he WILL.

Like I said in another post I am looking forward to Stephen taking over. I've never read one person that thinks he will be like his dad in his running of the team.

What say you Frog?

No, in fact Stephen is the one that is trying to get him to cut TO. I think his mindset is on football and the team and the product. Jerrys is on creating this Jerry World of constant attention. It wouldn't surprise me to find out that Jerry is causing this mess just to get face time during the off season and to take away from Pitt winning. He is that type of guy. Funny that my brother works for him and always defends him because he is close to action there but I think he knows Jerry won't change.

I am one of the foolish ones because I thought Parcells was his changing point. I'm still waiting for the embarrassment to be so much that he caves. I do think this is all getting to him some and that is why he called the Ticket.
