If we traded back, who would you want

Depending on how far back we go, I guess an OLB or S is a good choice. Maybe Delmas the FS out of Western Michigan would be good. He has been shooting up the draft boards lately. After the Combine I'll probably have a better idea. JMHO!

Me personally, would like Clint Stintim to pick up the SAM I AM spot.

I like where you are going with this pick, but I think Stintim is a 3-4 guy. He is sorta like a hybrid OLB/DE. He played a similar position in college. I would target someone like Brain Cushing or Sean Smith (versatility - though I like him as a FS more than a CB)

I'm not high on Cushing at all. There were a lot of rumors that he was on steroids. Don't know if they were true or not, but I wouldn't be to happy to get Cushing. I hate where we're picking to tell you the truth. It was fine until all of those idiots decided to stay an extra year.

If we were to trade back, man I think Delmas might be a decent guy to pick or possibly Lauranitus

Anybody think Johnson from G-Tech will be around in the late 1st? I wouldn't mind him at 25 as opposed to 15 where I wouldn't touch him with a 10 pick stick...

I think that Krugar could possibly be available with our second pick though.

I don't think he will be. He's got a non-stop motor, he's got an unreal work ethic, and he's a pass-rusher. Those are all things that will make his value go up up up.

I think once coaches and GMs do the interviews and meet him face-to-face, they'll have the same thought I do - that whatever talent deficiencies he has, he can be coached up because of his motor and work ethic.

I bet he goes in the low first round.

That all makes sense. You could easily be right. I guess we'll have to wait a couple of months after the combine and work outs to know where a lot of these guys are and how high they end up projecting and how far they fall.

I don't know if you saw the thread where I did a mock draft on another site and I posted the Texans picks, but I also had picked for the Jets and got Krugar for them in the 2nd round.

Of course it all depends on where we trade down to and who's available at that time. We could possibly trade down to mid 20's and possibly still get Patrick Chung, Sean Smith, or Louis Delmas. Other possibilities are Paul Kruger, but he's already been mentioned, Vontae Davis, Peria Jerry, Michael Johnson, Alphonso Smith, DJ Moore. It all depends on who's still on the board at #15, but a trade down is looking more possible every day.

Dropping back I think it would be great to pick up an elite runner like Greene or Moreno. Then with the 2nds we can still get a good safety and defensive end.

If we could trade back and get a 2nd round pick and somehow manage to get Alphonso and Delmas I would be thrilled. I don't think we need an elite runner, because of Slaton but a nice combo back would be good to have. Ayers might be there late in the 1st as well if we trade back, which I hope we do, nobody is really popping out at me that we couldn't get similar value at a lower draft position. The draft is too far away, sucks.

Wait. Are you talking about Jason Babin? :specnatz:

Babin didn't have "talent deficiencies". He ran a sub 4.6 at his pro day, and threw up around 30 reps at the combine. He was a great athlete, and an absolute beast in college. To this day I still don't know how he didn't have atleast a solid career.

I am thinking more along these lines of a trade also. If Raji not there V.Davis is only player I'd give #15 for, but I think a trade down offers the possibility to get this CB with good size and speed later. If not there, we have plenty of choices. I think Atlanta may be open to trade up and give up a 2nd. We do have some history with that team and 2nd round selections being traded.

I am looking at: Robert Ayers DE at #25 2A Shonn Green RB 2B (Atl) Ron Brace NT 3 Rashad Johnson FS and 4 ?. Ayers is getting good push up ladder now but not sure where he will level at. As he seems to have all the traits required, I'd go for him if draft was today rather than more "potential" guys like Michael Johnson. The 4 guys in 3 rounds fill most of our glaring needs and I'd probably go with a LB or a speed back in 4th.

I know you guys are going to kill me.I think Jeria Perry is a freak and his stock will rise.I hope the Texans get the opportunity to move back and take him only because he will be the best player available at any position.
How does he help the Texans? Don't we already have same player in Okoye? How about a player who can stop the runner or collapse the pocket forcing QB to release early or get run over by Mario. Your guy is good at what he does but Texans don't need those skills.

i like Kruger as well. may be the perfect 'motor' guy opposite our more selective 'motor' Mario

Kruger is like Boulman, but a little more athletic. Can't go wrong there.

If Sintim can be average in coverage and shut the run down, then he may be worth looking into. Drop him to DE on long yardage and things look up.

I like Ayers just as much as some of you guys but I thought we were interested in a pass rush specialist to go opposite Mario...

In his last two years, Ayers started 26 games and had a whopping 7 sacks.

He looks like a strong side DE to me with limited upside as a pass rusher. His real value is his ability to stop the run.

If we get him, fine. I'm cool with that. I think he will be a good player. But reading the board lately I was under the impression that we were looking for a weak side guy to provide pass rush so that Mario isn't consistently double-teamed...

He manhandled OT Oher in practice before Senior Bowl and then in the game in limited minutes got 3 tackles 1.5 sacks and was named the defensive player of the game. He just keep getting better. A good combine will have him moving up even more.
http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/dsprofile.php?pyid=33666&draftyear=2009&genpos=DE Click on the link and then read the recent notes on him. When I first mocked him, I had him in 4th round, as you can see NFL DraftScout .com has him 1 or 2nd round and moving up.

He is 6'3" 273 lbs and 4.76 speed. Wide receivers often have speed around 4.5 4.75. He does not have to get the QB just get close enough to "hurry" the guy or chase him towards Mario.

I've had Ayers in the high 2nd-low 3rd of my mocks and I have been moving him up my draft board almost daily it seems.

As I said, I like him a lot and would not complain in the least if we grabbed him. But I still do see him as a strong side run stuffer, not a pass rusher.

And what WRs in the NFL run a 4.75? I ran faster than that in high school.

Not to argue but I said around 4.5 to 4.75. The latter is more tight end but look at these Michael Crabtree 4.50; Pat White 4.50. Ayers is .26 of one second slower. Dwayne Jarrett 4.62 http://speedendurance.com/2008/04/10/dwayne-jarrett-462-40-yard-dash/

I think the focus is not can Ayers run with WR but how does speed compare to other DEs? I think he can get around the block and you think he is strong against the run. Sounds like just the guy.

What if we traded back and there really weren't any great impact players on defense and Chris Wells is sitting right there? Don't think they would do it, but it might be tempting.

Now we're talkin'.

I think we should hope that Michael Johnson keeps dropping. He would be a perfect late round pass rush DE to compliment Mario. 7 sacks and 15 TFL's in 2008.

Some people have started talking about Paul Kruger as well, and I wouldn't mind that pick either. 7.5 sacks and 16.5 TFL's in 2008.

I cana't get a tru picture on this guy. SOme love him and others say no way. I'll continue to follow.

I wouldn't be too against trading back to a team like the Cardinals (#31 or #32) or a team at the very top of the 2nd round (Oakland?). Take their 2nd rounder this year and 1st rounder next year. Oakland may grab a LT or D player with their 1st and want to trade up for Jeremy Maclin? just throwing stuff out there

That would leave us with a very high 2nd rd pick and a mid 2nd rd pick for the first day this year. Then next year we'd have two 1st rd picks. Look at the value at those spots, maybe like Alex Mack, Alphonso Smith or a LB, maybe Michael Johnson, Brian Cushing (although he's been moving steadily up towards mid-1st).

Depending on the outcome of that team next year and ours, we could be in the running of a premier Safety like Eric Berry and maybe a DE like Greg Hardy with our 1st rounders.

Thoughts?

Next year is probably going to be a loaded draft unless the players and owners work out a CBA. I wouldn't mind it, but the real question is, have the Texans FO decided we are in "win now" mode? If we are in "win now" they might think that the guy they get in the 1st this year could have a huge impact (Although it seems like our 1st rounders never have really big impacts their rookie year's).

Plus, if you're talking 2 first round draft picks, then you're also talking about paying two rookies 1st round money. I don't know how Rick Smith feels about that, but he seems to be more frugal than our last GM, who must've thought that McNair would take all his money away if he didn't spend every dime.

Or that guy from USC. Whats his name...? You know Oakland will be awful.

My thought if we aren't spending big money in FA why not two first rounders instead? Win now? We aren't finished with our five year plan...errr something.

Start looking at the roster, just how many of these guys...seven, eight, or ten draft picks with the hypothetical move down deal....do you really expect to make the roster next September ? Phily might want to trade one of their firsts.
Gonna cost ya.

Let's see what the beaner runs at the combine. I personally would be under whelmed.
Power offense back in the Kubes' WCO ? I dunno about that one. Just as soon have the LSU fullback. Same thing less money.

The only guy I could see them doing something like this with....an offensive player high, is Percy Harvin.

Other wise they'll do what they've always done....fish for them in day two.
All shapes and sizes all weekend long. The LSU fullback and Jerimiah would suite me just fine.

I want as much fire power thru the draft as I can get as soon as I can. I guess it would depend on the trade itself and knowing more about what you can get with next year's 1st. Theoretically, a team like the Cardinals would have another very low 1st & that turns me off. The 2nd round this year would not be high either so..I am just not too sure. For me, I think a trade down to Philadelphia picking up their two firsts (22 & 29) might be a better way depending on what we had to throw in with #15.

Philly is so well run, they arent likly to trade up. They horde draft picks, and may move down again this year.

Percey would fit in very well with our offense. How do you cover all the weapons? This is a very real possibility, with defense such a high priority.

I think we need to go straight defense with our first two picks. I'm really not sure why I even posted that to be honest with you.

I would love to have Wells though. He'll be a beast in the NFL for many years I can assure you.

If he can stay on the field. I wouldnt spend our first to find out.

he looks good but i dont see us using such a high pick on him when we run mostly 2 wr sets and those guys are entrenched as starters

i think the chances that all our day 1 picks are on defence is over 95%

I agree with you, just saying how good he would do in our offense. If we trade down a time or two, and still don't like whats out there, it could happen.

trade back to 26 with Baltimore so they can draft Maclin at 15 and we get Louis Delmas S Western Michigan.
What makes you think Maclin is on the Board @ 15 ? I dunno, but I think there's even a descent chance he's taken before Crabtree. He's faster than Crabtree and is also an excellent kick returner.

but he doesn't have Crabtree's size (6'3" compared to 6' and 210 lbs. compared to 199 lbs) also Fitzgerald ran a 4.63 at the combine and he was drafted at the top of his draft.
