BOSTON (AP)—The man who fired Jeff Jagodzinski for interviewing with the New York Jets called Wednesday the hardest day in his 12 years as Boston College’s athletic director.

Athletic director Gene DeFilippo declined to speculate during a 20-minute news conference—at which he said “I love Jags”—if the coach preferred the technical, Xs-and-Os job of an NFL coach to the college job with its recruiting and glad-handing of supporters.

He seemed to choke back tears as he discussed his decision to fire Jagodzinski over “a difference of vision for the future.”

“I really don’t know” if he preferred the pro game, DeFilippo said. “You would have to ask Jeff that.”

Two players praised the coach and agreed with DeFilippo.

“If there were any indications, we didn’t see it,” said junior Mark Herzlich, one of the nation’s top linebackers.

Wow what a stupid move by BC. Jagodzinski is a great coach. I am now looking forward to playing BC without this guy, instead of every year worrying about the Seminoles getting physically dominated by this team.

If I'm a coach, why would I want that job now knowing that I can't move on if better offers come up

They really jumped the gun on this, but I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up in the NFL next season. Even if he doesn't get the Jets job, he has a chance at getting the Seahawks Offensive Coordinator position.

I heard on the radio that Jagodzinski didn't really like to recruit. His recruiting classes have apparently been below par. Recruiting is 90% of a college football program so he may not have wanted to be there for long anyway.

He signed a contract. How would you like for Andre Johnson to leave Houston if a better offer comes up?

That doesn't make any sense.

AJ going to another NFL franchise doesn't correlate to a college coach going to the pro's. Don't be silly.

He's changing leauges completely. It's not like he was going to another college team.

If there were a leauge greater than the NFL and AJ had an opprotunity to play in it it'd just be something we'd have to live with.

It happens all the time and it's perfectly acceptable in sports and the real world.

Buccaneers hire Jagodzinski: Three weeks after being dismissed by Boston College for pursuing an NFL head coaching job, former Packer assistant Jeff Jagodzinski was hired Jan. 29 by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to be their offensive coordinator.

Jagodzinski, who led Boston College to the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game in each of his two seasons, was fired Jan. 7 after being told he would be let go if he interviewed for the New York Jets' coaching vacancy.

He went on the interview anyway and was fired the next day. The Jets job eventually went to Rex Ryan.

Jagodzinski was a tight ends coach for the Packers from 1999-2003 and then spent the next two seasons with the Falcons, serving as tight ends coach in 2004 and offensive line coach in 2005. He returned to the Packers as offensive coordinator in 2006.
