SS Michael Hamlin, Clemson

Like I said in another thread I haven't read alot about this guy on this board and I think he deserves his own thread. He is 6-3 205 lbs. First team All-ACC in 2008.

Career stats: 308 tackles, 14 interceptions, 4 FF, 4 FR.

He is a well balanced guy, good in coverage, good in run support. I think he can be had in the 2nd round, but I don't read alot about draft projections.

What do yall think about this guy?

Right now, the second round is a little high for him, but I wouldn't be upset with him on my team. I think he provides more in coverage than anything we currently have.

I was thinking it may be a little high but then I sat back and wondered why. He does everything well. I think he will move up boards throughout the draft process.

Is this guy expected to go in the first round?

What about that safety that plays for Tennessee? I hear he is by far the best safety. If he comes out I'm sure that he would go before the Texans 15th pick. Our first pick obviously needs to be a DE or a S though. It all depends on who is on the boards. I wouldn't mind moving up though to get a for sure STUD at either position if that meant we could get a bonafied pass rusher or ball hawking safety for years.

Eric Berry is only a sophomore. Hamlin's a good safety; he's well balanced, has good size, and has some decent speed. How he runs will determine a lot for him. He should be available in round 2, maybe round 3 where a lot of other good but not elite safeties will be available for us (Chung, Greene, Delmas, etc). I would be happy with any of them, but Courtney Greene in round 3 would be a steal for us. Big, fast, smart, and can make plays in both run and pass defense.

There's not alot to dislike about Hamlin. If he were a tenth of a second faster people would be hyping him as a first rounder. I think he's going to be a really good safety, and playmaker at the next level.

With Hamlin's coverage skills, what about putting him at FS?

We do need a FS. We have alot of SS on this roster already, and they seem to love Barber and Harrison. I would be ok with Fergi bnack as well, since he and Wilson were the best Saftey play we have ever had.

I suppose it is possible because he has the skills. It's just about what the new coordinator wants him to do if he were drafted.

I'd kinda like to have a SS with some coverage ability, rather than the guys we have had for our entire franchise history. Hamlin is a guy you can move down to the LOS as a disguise and actually drop him back in deeper coverage. Seems like everytime we moved our safety to the LOS he was either blitzing or covering the flats. That gets to be a bit obvious, but that's what RS's scheme was overall, obvious. That's just what I saw though, I can't speak for sure because I can't always see the secondary.

I don't really see a true FS in this draft, but I don't know how all these guys play, only what I have seen. I would keep Wilson in the FS role, and have Ferguson and Hamlin split time at SS, hopefully by the end of the year Hamlin is playing better than Ferguson and wins the job over.

One huge problem we have is that Wilson and Ferguson are both decent players, but when we have to get our backups in there for a few plays, they are completely useless. I'd keep Ferguson and Wilson even if we drafted a safety in the first round. Plus I feel like Ferguson is a better FS than anyone else we have on the roster outside of Wilson. CC Brown, Ferguson, Wilson, and Hamlin would be a decent safety group. The level of play wouldn't drop off a whole lot when we need to play our backups.

Barber is a better saftey than CC. Brown wont be back next year. I just wounldnt expect a huge turnover at the saftey position this year. As Ive said, the staff loves Barber and Harrison.

I have Houston trading down (maybe with Eagles) and getting a 3rd as we did last season picking up Brown a 3rd and a 6th. Philadelphia is interested in Mays who could be there at 15. If this occurs, we should be able to get William Moore 6'1" 220 4.45 with 115 tackles 2 sacks & 8 INTs.http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/dsprofile.php?pyid=8377&draftyear=2009&genpos=FS We would then have an extra 3rd. I was told that he has pick up some weight but that should be correctable.

Also, I understand that Barber is well like for FS in 2009. We will see.

DO you think that Moore is as good or better than Mays?

has there been any timetable set to hire the new DC along with announcing new position coaches? this will directly affect current roster postion evaluations, he & new defensive coaches will be under intense scrutiny to weed out lingering underachievers & I wouldn't ever call CC Brown one of those if anything he is an overachiever. He should be resigned on the cheap & retained as the back-up SS & special teams standout. to upgrade the position via the draft would probably require a much higher pick.

I would think CC Brown's defeincies reflect what the Texans need to upgrade @ SS, the deep speed NFL teams covet & Hamlin just doesn't have that elite speed. you almost have to go Mays to find that range, athletic ability & speed. someone is going to surprise scouts with his speed @ the combine, a good coaching staff can fix mechanics, football intelligence, using angles better etc. but they can't make him win a foot race against a 4.3 guy in the NFL.

Yes, but what if Mays is gone by the time of our 15th pick? What then?

Absolutely not and never said so. I do think Moore and an extra 3rd and an extra 6th round are better than Mays. Remember the Duane Brown trade? Very similar situation could happen this year.

This is why I am leaning to Williams at lower than 15 and a possible trade down even if Mays is gone. Like Beerlover said, we need a FS with jets attached to his shoes. Willaims at 4.45 + 6'1" 220? There you go.

I haven't watched Moore enough to know how well he could really be so it is hard to say.

Personally though, I'd rather get the stud back there at Safety if Mays is available though. I wouldn't pass on him to trade down, unless there is a guy that we feel could still be a bonafied stud at DE in the later part of the first round which probably wouldn't be there.

I know that we draft pretty well in the 3rd and 4th rounds and all, but I'd rather get the guy that looks like a for sure stud than gamble to see what is there in the 3rd or 4th if we were to get the extra pick to trade down.

What's funny is, I have often argued your point in drafts previous to last year when I wanted an LT. I wanted an LT rather than Mario...hey, me and 10 million others got it wrong. If there is that stud at your position of need, I say go for him. Having said that, we have our stud in Mario Williams, we need another DE and a DT to upgrade what we have, not a first round need. FS while it is a need, not necessarily a # 15 pick in 1st, especially if you can get a starter later in 1st and pick up another selection as we did with Duane Brown. That trade blew me away even before I knew how Slaton and D. Barber would develop.

The trade down thing is always an interesting avenue, and we have done well with those picks. However, I don't think that we can bank on being that successful in those mid rounds every year. We could, but I don't think it is some sort of formula to gamble on every year you know. It really just depends on what gets drafted in front of you, because you just never know what will be there. We could trade down and get a good safety like you say in a guy like Moore, but then not do so well with that extra 3rd rounder this time around and that is IF we were able to get a 3rd rounder again. I'm not saying we couldn't do real well with it, but it isn't always a given like some people think just because we were successful doing that last year.

I so totally don't even want to think about drafting another DT in the first round. NO WAY. It may be a need still, but not as bad as replacing Weaver is and getting a safety. Plus, I don't trust in the Texans first round selections of DT's anymore after Johnson and Okoye. Okoye might still come around, but I'm not to confident right now. And Okam will not never amount to really anything. He never met the hype that he had at Texas and didn't do anything for us last year. We can't use another first round pick on a DT. I know we need one, but not in the first round.

Strengths:
Outstanding size with long arms...Muscular with great bulk...A great athlete...Tough and physical...A big hitter who strikes fear into the hearts of the opposition...Does a terrific job against the run...Has excellent range...Explosive with a burst to close...Decent hands and ball skills...Has shown the ability to make plays in coverage...Real versatile...Productive...Strong work ethic...A team leader and captain.

Weaknesses:
Durability is a concern...Questionable instincts...Can be slow to read and react...Misses too many tackles...Too aggressive at times...Lacks fluid hips...Speed is merely average...Will struggle to match up with wideouts in man coverage...Needs to face the action...Lets emotions gets the best of him ... Might be more effective if he lost a little weight.

Notes:
Was a two year starter for the Tigers...Began his college career as a cornerback...A 2nd Team All-American in 2007...Previously wore #21...Missed three games with a hamstring injury in 2005 and later required offseason surgery to place a screw in his broken foot...Underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder following the 2007 season...Was hindered by foot and rib injuries for most of his senior season...Was kept near the line a lot in 2008 and that was a big reason for the drop in his interception totals...Hybrid who has been used in a variety of different roles and has the ability to operate like a free safety, strong safety or corner...Impressive physical specimen who looked like a future Top 10 overall pick at one point...Stock dropped a bit as a senior but he still has a lot of potential.

Sounds like a big-time stud to me.

Again his stock is dropping, and if he doesn't make it up at the combine/senior bowl(if his injuries are still lingering) then he will find himself out of the 1st round. Right now, I think his draft projection is at mid-1st to mid-2nd, which is in our reach without having to use a first on him.

Michael Hamlin, Kam Chancellor, Emmanuel Cook, Patrick Chung, Sean Smith, Nic Harris, Chip Vaughn, or Louis Delmas in the 2nd or 3rd round could be our pick. Whomever we pick though I'd definetly like them to play SS, Eugene Wilson has been good this year at FS and deserves another year. I'd also like the Texans to make a push/possible trade up to get Eric Berry next year at FS.
