"TAMPA - The Bucs and assistant head coach Larry Coyer have mutually agreed to part ways, Coyer said Wednesday.

"I truly have high regard for the Bucs and everybody with them," Coyer said. "I'll miss the team, but I've decided to pursue other things."

Coyer came to the Bucs after he was fired as defensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos in 2007. He spent one year as the Bucs' defensive line coach but was reassigned prior to the 2008 season.

Coyer is one of several Bucs assistants whose contracts are slated to expire in the coming weeks.

Others include tight ends coach Bob Casullo and linebackers coach Casey "Gus" Bradley.

In addition to possibly having to look for replacements for Coyer, Casullo and Bradley, the Bucs are also on the lookout for a secondary coach to replace Raheem Morris, who was promoted to defensive coordinator.

Morris, meanwhile, has been mentioned as a possible candidate for the St. Louis head coaching position, but the Rams have yet to name him as a candidate or schedule an interview with him."

familarity, experience but when he says that he wants to try other things does that mean another coaching position or something non football related?
 
I started off being intrigued the most by Greg Williams - but Coyer has been getting more interesting to me in the last couple of days. Coyer was DC in Denver for four years - looks like he had three good years and one bad one, which of course cost him his job.

I don't know. I still haven't heard a name that that really gets me excited - except for Marinelli as a possible D-Line coach... but I think he'll end up getting a DC job and won't have to settle for a position coaching job.
 
Larry Coyer is an interesting candidate he has coached in the Tampa Two & Blitzing style defense in Denver when they were really good before the one bad season and he has loads of experience as well.

Coyer's last in Denver wasn't that bad. At least not by Houston Texans standards. The 2006 Broncos defense finished 14th in total yards, 8th in points allowed. During a 5 game win streak early in the season, Coyer's defense held opponents to 7 points or less. But, Denver also had a 4 game losing streak in the 2nd half of '06. Including 2 losses to the Chargers, where the defense allowed 35 and 48 points. Denver failed to make the playoffs, and Coach Teflon, Mike Shanahan, made Coyer the fall guy.

That's similar to what just happened to Coyer in Tampa. And he wasn't even the DC there. The Bucs had a late 4 game skid, knocking them out of the playoffs. Long time Tampa Bay DC Monte Kiffin left to join his son at Knoxville. Like in Denver, Bucs offensive genius/head coach Jon Gruden needed a scapegoat. Despite Tampa Bay's defense finishing in the top 10 in points and yardage. The offensive genius stays, the defense gets the re-organization.

I think Mike Shanahan deserved to get canned. His teams stopped putting points on the board. Jon Gruden has been riding on the coattails of Kiffin's defense for 7 years. Gruden should have gotten the boot, not Coyer. We have our own offensive genius here in Houston. Gary Kubiak's offense is great at picking up 1st downs, not so great at scoring touchdowns. My hope is that if Coyer comes in and turns the defense around, and the Texans still fail to make the playoffs, the right guy takes the blame.

With Coyer in his mid 60s, going home and doing nothing is greater possibility that if he were 45.

Yeah, I am guessing that they would want to go younger for that position on the field.

I will very much be interested in seeing who the Texans get as a defensive line coach. Mario Williams has had two since he has been with the team.

If Kubiak goes in this type of direction, we would have an idea of how short term his thinking is and i would not consider it a good sign. Still, overall, I just want good hires at three (I presume) positions.

On the other hand, Kubiak might chooses to go with the Gibbs/ Baby Shanny approach.

Hire Coyer on a 1 or 2 year deal and train up a young up and coming guy.

Meh. I would still like a guy who has been around the block a few times but not looking for his Social Security check.

I don't care if the guy is in a wheelchair, or hasn't started shaving. I think Kubiak needs to be thinking about winning, and winning now. He shouldn't get a 3rd chance at a defensive coordinator. You can win with a old guy (like a Jim Johnson) or a young guy (like a Steve Spagnuolo). Just pick a winner, because there are no more excuses.

And give me a moment to be Captain Obvious, no matter what any our Jan/Feb opinion of the hire is (excites/disappoints/frustrates/angers), we won't know until Halloween or so if Kubiak got it right. Even then, a couple of good draft picks/Fa signings might matter just as much as the DC.
 
I know he had a decent defense 3 out of 4 years but I think Coyer was a victim of bad drafting or inheriting bad players or both in Denver. The only other thing it could have been is that he wasn't able to get the most out of his players. Whether he had any input or not I don't know but they basically ended up getting rid of their entire defensive line a few years back. I still would prefer a fresh face with no ties to the Broncos or Kubiak.

I think Coyer's ticket was pulled by Bronco ownership and Shanahan was pissed, kind of like this year, except he got his ticket pulled too...

I think they are getting the band back together. Kubiak, Smith, Bush, and Rhodes were all coaching in Denver together. Looks to me like Coyer is going to come in and fill the Gibbs roll on defense for Bush the new DC...possible have an "assistant" DC title and also coach the D-line.

Just my .02 worth.

Rod Marinelli would be a good line coach but I think he's headed to the Bears
