Talk Texans live with John McClain

Shouldn't the title to this have been Talk 30 second Movie Appearances and what hollywood folks have graced me by talking to me - live with John McClain?

Yeah, I've asked 4 so far, and none have been used. He's picking the ones he can answer, and that means anything with substance and requires an IQ goes unanswered :)

Your question will most likely get answered. There are a TON that get sent to him and he chats for a couple of hours.

If he is choosing why did he choose that one question just to say: "this is the dumbest post ever"

He annoys me.

I submitted one, it's hard to follow and try to work at the same time.

I do have other stuff to do besides sit on the TexansBBS all day. LOLOL

Yeah, they can moderate the questions that come in and only answer the ones they want. They had similar chats with the Science Guy when Ike was heading our way and in his case, I think they grew sick of all the "Hi, I'm in Katy, how bad will we be hit?" questions. LOL.

he never got to mine either. Oh well. I guess I shouldn't have started them out with "Hey doughnut man........" LOL

He got to 2 of mine and was happy with one of the answers. I was hoping that the Texans would take a look at the DB coach from philly but I understand why the Texans won't now.

it's pretty sad that this clown is the one we look to for answers regarding our team, but he really doesn't know much than we do, and even more sickening, he doesn't care enough to chase down some answers.

McClain is an asshat. too bad he doesn't get a New Years Eve firing of his own.

We? Nah, I've yet to find a better source of info than this MB. If there's a decent snippett of an article from chinless that's posted here and it seems interesting, I'll click on the link provided by the member. Otherwise, I rarely read anything from Chinless or Justass. Or any of the other mindless parrots from the Chron.

I read TC and LZ's blog and that's really it.

I don't trust anything McClain says. The guy is too close to some of the people. For over a year now I have heard that clown defend Richard Smith by saying that he couldn't be aggressive because of our personnel. Then 5 of the last 6 games they throw caution to the wind and it works and people are saying that they finally found their groove, etc. It's amazing what excuses can be overcome when something finally works. McClain is full of excuses. I like the guys inside stories but when it comes to football strategy and the team I think he is full of hot air.

McClain was still using the personnel excuse for Smith in the chat today. And it was blatantly obvious that we did have the personnel available to be effectively aggressive. It's almost comical that he can sit there and deny something so blatantly obvious like that.

Exactly. And therein lies my problem with him. He has about 10 catch phrases about the team that he just spits out no matter what. Yet when his theory is shot to heck..basically because Smith never had the brains to use it..he just keeps spitting it out. It's like when people talk about cutting players or firing coaches his only response is "well who would you want to bring in?" Basically implying.."we can't do any better so shut up."

I don't get your takes at all..I've asked John questions for ages on various forums and he always has new and insighful information. He's a really nice guy as well. He does know a ton of NFL people and I guess he could be considered too close to some but all I can go by is how I've been treated by him and how well informed he is when I ask.

But to each his own~

Haha, I remember that one. Didn't they answer that one saying Katy would be destroyed?

Sorry WWJD but the guy rubs me the wrong way when it comes specifically to football Xs and Os, etc. When I first started listening to him I enjoyed his pieces on the radio because I enjoyed NFL news. But now when people ask legit questions or question his info..such as the personnel comment above..he gets defensive and pretty harsh to some people like they are idiots. I've noticed alot of it this year. I've heard him undress people on the radio about problems with the team,e tc. Very surly. I have also written him a few nice letters about some friends of mine in the NFL and have never gotten responses. I'm sure he is a great guy to sit around and swap stories with and I still like hearing his NFL stories...I just think he doesn't know half as much as what he says when it comes to football knowledge. I think he takes a line he hears and just sticks to it.

He also finds a theory or a theme and will beat it into the ground. His favorite point to make is that the secondary is terrible because they don't have anybody higher than a 4th round draft pick in when Robinson isn't playing. He's said it all year. He says it to callers as though it's a fact when it is in fact just his opinion. He says it in his articles that he will do. I'm sure that this isn't the first time he's latched onto a sketchy theory about football and just espoused it as though it's "THE ONLY REASON WHY".

He seems like a generally nice guy, a little high on himself and his own knowledge of football, but he tries to be informative. I think it's apparently he's gotten much lazier in his journalism and rarely tries to break any news anymore be it about the Texans or anything in the NFL.

Overall I'm glad I don't have to listen to him more than once or twice a week if I'm listening to only 610, I'm sure he'd grate on my nerves much more if this wasn't the case.

When someone gives John his opinion he talks with some credibility but if he is talking off the top of his head he seems to have no real eye for the game whatsoever. He is an information gatherer and a story teller but nobody I'd consider to have astute observational skills when it comes to breaking down the game.

Gosh guys I just don't have that opinion of John at all.

I really like the guy and I try to catch him on the radio as much as I'm able.

Interesting opinions on here.

Just read through the blog that started this for how pissy he can get.

IMO he used to be much more pleasant. I think two things have made him angrier over the last 3-4 years. First was being told to cover the Texans and not the NFL as a whole. He liked freelancing around the country and talking lots about the Cowboys and Titans. Plus it made his league contacts' information relevant to his position. Then the regime changed and his squeaky throat (Casserly) with the Texans left town and the new folks haven't opened up to him (you can tell Kubiak doesn't particularly like him in the interviews). So he is grumpy and now has to try to "analyze" things because he doesn't have much insider info on the Texans.

Well, 'to be fair', DeMeco Ryans said the same thing about personnel earlier this season on his radio show. A caller asked why they don't blitz more, and DeMeco basically said that they don't have the personnel to be aggressive without leaving themselves severely vulnerable. Smith's play calling has always had an element of giving up big plays. I can think of several off the top of my head the last three seasons.

Of course, the personnel we have are the talent he evaluated and picked in many cases, so in the end it all comes back to the coaches anyway.

As far as McClain is concerned, I agree with the above about liking his war stories but have little regard for his football strategy acumen.

I think Icak hit this one out of the park. Been reading and listening to McClain for years and its just not the same. There isn't the same love and passion and he seems to have nurtured an axe to grind regarding Texans.

It's kinda like listening to Rome. Yeah, it's OK at times now but its not the same as it used to be. It used to be like Pirate User-Generated Radio. Now its just another show. I feel the same about McClain. I used to look forward to his columns but not anymore.

I think you nailed it. When I first listened to him I really was relieved because I wasn't a fan of Lance and John on 610..well mostly Granato..so when he came on to talk NFL I was excited to hear the rumors, info, etc compared to the local hack stuff. As I said, this past year I have just noticed more pushing of buttons, being rude to callers and really being defensive. I think asking tough football scheme questions is part of the territory and he would rather talk about being in Waco enshrining some old guy into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. Fine but just don't beat the drum on subjects when it isn't necessarily true. Of course I get annoyed with many Houston sports people...like Rich Lord saying Richard Smith only lost his job because of the Oakland game.

LOL, the Ike chats could get pretty funny with all the hyper Katy and Kingswood folks. The Science Guy tried to keep things light.

Regarding McClain, I think he's decided to rest on his laurels and split is attention between the bad movies he makes cameos in and Anna Megan. And making horrible videos with Anna Megan. And making horrible songs about the Texans with Anna Megan.

This city lacks serious sports reporting and insight because the chron guys really don't have any competition. McClain's post-game grades usually break down thusly: they win, everyone gets As and Bs. They lose, everyone gets Ds and Fs. It's "scratch the surface" soundbite reporting at its worst.

You want insight on football, you really have to turn to those most passionate about their teams: the fans. People here do more research and analysis because they love the Texans and football. Most of us here aren't paid or recognized as "experts", and those that are are still driven by that sports passion (e.g. TC and LZ). And most of us here don't view our egos as bigger than a reasoned and thoughtful discussion about football.

I think you hit the nail on the head.

You get more news and info on the Texans here than most anywhere else.

I noticed this, too. You go to DFW, and you have the Dallas Morning News and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram competing with each other. Their cover on DFW sports is much better than the Chron's on Houston's sports. It's a shame.

Funny you brought this up. Growing up in Ft. Worth before moving here, I always loved the Dallas Morning News compared to the Star Telegram. Yet both had really great sports writers. I still think the DMN is one of the best sports sections in the US. But over the holidays I noticed that both sports sections had 3-4 identical articles and they weren't AP reprints. They were local pieces on the Cowboys and Colt McCoy. My parents told me in order to save money and all, that both papers were going to start sharing writers, etc. I'm not sure what this will mean in the future but it almost sounded like a future with maybe a DFW paper and not both.

I created a text file of todays live chat with John McClain for those of you unable to participate. You'll need MS Word to read it. Some good questions and answers provided by some of our members here. Of course, their were tons of totally ignorant questions asked as well, but I'm sure none of those could be members here /sarcasm :)

I wouldn't be surprised to see a DFW paper in the future.

I'm guessing because your comment has me confused..do you mean the two papers would merge?

DMN has an outstanding sports dept and I know Galloway writes for the FWST.

If anything I think it would go the way of the future...no more "paper" newspapers and all news will be online.

This was the trend before we hit this financial crises of '08 which may be into the process of spreading into the economic recession of the post WW2 period, at the least.
I think most people know what happened to the Chicago Tribune corporate parent (which also owns the LA Times), and locally they been having a lot of layoffs at the Chron and then there's the tough times up in N.Texas that somebody mentioned ?
Eventually it'll be something like WWJD says: maybe have a few national hard-copy publications like the WSJ & NY Times and everything else will be electronic on websites.
