So I went to the Verizon Wireless store this morning in Pearland, where Slaton and Dunta Robinson were signing, and asked them what their thoughts were on Richard Smith. . .

D Rob didn't beat around the bush at all. I asked him (while he was doing my signing) flat out if he thinks Richard Smith should stay, and he said "Absolutely not."

I then asked Mark Vandermeer (off the air in a side conversation) if he thinks Richard Smith will stay and he said, he doesn't know this for sure, but he expects him to be fired as early as today. He did not state that this was a fact, but that it is he was he expects.

Take it for what it's worth.

YO!!!!

I'm happy. The avatars worked, I mean they really worked. ;)

If he is fired, then I think we need to go after Mangini for DC.

I've always found players are surprisingly candid during autograph sessions.

BTW, I wish I knew about this one :) Only D-Rob signature I have has a certain #8 signature next to it. Time for a new one.

On air Dunta when asked about Smith said the D had more talent than was displayed on the field. It was a pretty marked contrast to the kind of answer given when asked about Kubiak earlier in the season.

When that question was asked, he kept a very "matter of fact" look on his face. You could sense just how strongly he feels about it.

Ummm.....

Not to be nitpicky or anything, but I don't really see anything in the original post that actually ties to the thread title.

Dunta - Should be out
Vandermeer - Probably is out
Thread title - Is out

Nothing new to see here.

While this is good news if you're in the fire smith camp, I'm waiting till it's official beforw I openly celebrate.

He said something similar when he was asked about Kubiak earlier in the season. He was asked about Smith, but avoided the question and said something along the lines of "no matter what they call, it's up to us to execute."

Dunta's not one to lie, but he's seemingly not one to throw a coach under the bus midseason

I heard on Sirius NFL Radio that Kubiak will meet with McNair today to decide the fate of the coaching staff especially Richard Smith..

Not trying to stir it up or anything, but did he know you were going to post his name to that opinion on the internet?

Good scoop, I really am just curious if MV reads this and afterward has to change his shorts.

I'm with this guy. Actually, I want Fox26 coverage of him being escorted out of Reliant Stadium carrying a box of his personal belongings. Then I'll celebrate.

I'll believe it when it's official. Until then, we've been had on this rumours before.

I hope some of you aren't setting yourselves up for a big letdown.:shades:

You are absolutely correct Bong, neither of those guys make personal decisions, so until it comes from the site, I wouldn't say it's an absolute.

These are the first comments I've heard come from anyone within the Texans organization, aside from Kubiak's unwillingness to comment on Smith during his news conference.

Champion, the mods are more than welcome to change the title if they feel it's misrepresented, that surely was not the intent of this thread.

umm, what? you're either really, really wrong here, or i misread what you posted.

This is good news. I believe Dunta and like I said before I don't think Dunta would resign if Smith doesn't get fired. The sooner the better. Please don't give Frank Bush the job. At this point we need a fresh start from an outsider who brings some of his own coaches. And no 3-4 defensive gurus. We don't have the players for it or the time to rebuild.

Not only that - but as much hell as we give Richard Smith, he's only part of the problem. I'll be happy if he's gone - but we also need some SERIOUS upgrades in personnel. I don't think our current defense would be dramatically better if the personnel remained the same. A little better, sure... but not a lot better.

That's a good point, but it's not on the Texans official site, and I'm not reporter...Just sharing some info with a few people I talk Texans football with.

I remember a similar rumor that came out after they took D. Carr off the old banner. IIRC, Dunta called him out the day before.

Where there's smoke........

No, Chris. That's NOT what people want to hear, or accept.

They have it in the their heads that, all you gotta do is fire Richard Smith, and, BOOOOM . . . instant Super Bowl next year, global warming is instantly solved, and we all get our 401K losses back, with interest.

Luckily there's Free Agency and a draft coming up ;)

...and I do appeciate you passing it along. This board is where to get news and info on the Texans whether it is official news or otherwise. Thanks.

That's why you need to get your new DC in place sooner rather than later. Let the new guy evaluate what he has in OTA's and develop his shopping list.

We all know that upgrades to the defense would improve things.

Its just that some of us think that giving Dick Smith better personnel would be like outfitting a lousy carpenter with first class tools.

What he builds will still look like crap.

We want a better carpenter. ...AND better tools.

Come on. No need to be overly dramatic. No real objective person believes that getting rid of Dicky is the magic bullet. It is merely the first step of righting the ship on the defensive side of the ball.

Bob knows he would be flooded with bent fans if Richard Smith stayed.

We can put up a poll like I did for Kubes. 90% wants Kubes to stay. More than 90% will want Richard Smith gone.

Bob will pull the trigger.

I think it is almost that simple. Richard Smith is a really bad dc. But we won't really know until they take the field next season what degree of bad Smith was.

Apparently a vast quantity of the city of houston don't feel the same as I just heard a multitude of champagne corks being popped...

Good idea, he sure paid attention to the Bush and VY polls during 2006.

I'm sure the decision has already been made....its not like there is anything new to review. The defense gave up 778 points the last two seasons. Only the worst defenses in the league give up that many points (nearly 400 a year). No team can win consistently if they give up that many points on a regular basis...It's a given in my book.

That is a little harsh. He is a good guy who is in over his head. Heck Kubiak has been in over his head at times also.

Be a little civil, and always remember we cheered the hiring of Pardee for the Oilers, and we got a good man in over his head.

I would rather the question be "Do we have enough talent?" Rather than it be "Is the defensive staff screwing up this badly?".

I've come to the point where I don't think Smith is capable of anything and I'd rather be surprised at how good his performance is on another team than wallowing in terrible football while he is here.

YO!!!!

I'm happy. The avatars worked, I mean they really worked. ;)

If he is fired, then I think we need to go after Mangini for DC.

Of course they worked. They eliminated Dom Capers with extreme prejudice in no time at all back in 2005 and they did the same thing to Richard Smith in 2008. Personally I think that Bob McNair reads the Texans boards and once he sees enough pink soap bars the deal is done.

Once I understood the power of the avatars I decided never to use them again which is why I didn't craft up a new one for Richard Smith. It's just too much power in a little graphic for my taste.

Now that you've all seen what they're capable of I trust that you'll always use pink soap avatars responsibly in the future. With great power comes great responsibility.

Not that Richard Smith doesn't need to go. He does without any doubt. I just got so sick of seeing them when I logged in last time that I didn't want to do that again.

It was said a while back by Rick Smith that he has been trying to resign Dunta all season. Could the status of Richard Smith be a big reason Dunta has not reached an agreement? Could he be waiting to see who the new guys will be?

ReallY?

:D

I think the entire fan base would be let down if Smith is allowed to stay.

I wouldn't.

There are still some of us who equate the level of the talent of the players and the hand cuffs of going exclusively with a rush four only when weighing the DC's production. What I know.....they've been rushing four exclusively at Denver since I was a small yonker. And Kubiak may ask Smith to fall on his sword....but that sheet came straight from Gary Kubiak. And the '09 defensive numbers are Kubiak's and Kubiak's alone. Get Smith better groceries to cook with, then I'd say you'd have a fair argument. When they rush five or six no one gets there......and it's been that way for a long, long time around here.

Only problem with Smith is non football knee jerk people judging a football man. Nothing more.

That is exactly what I think it is. Dunta will not resign with the Texans if Smith is kept on as dc. JMHO

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? SURELY YOU JEST!

:wow::spit:

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? SURELY YOU JEST!

I do jest.

But let me add that I drew up the first "Fire Capers Club" avatar and that whole 2005 season just left me with such a bad taste in my mouth that I had no interest in making another one even though Smith had one coming. It just got so ugly that year that I didn't want to see a board full of those again.
