Dead Weight/Salary Cap

So we have some dead weight going into the offseason. If we cut some of these guys we take a cap hit, but they're taking up valuable roster spots. The good news is, other than Weaver, most of these scrubs will be gone by the end of 2009, then we can actually go after some real free agents in 2010, also this will help us keep OD, Ryans, and Dunta, if they'll take bigger paydays in 2010 rather than big checks next year.

Anthony Weaver:
I would try to renegotiate Anthony Weavers contract and then trade him to a team that runs the 3-4. I think the guy can play it's just that he was brought in here before we went to the 4-3. Maybe try to get a OG or something. Best I can tell we are stuck with him until 2011.

Morlon Greenwood:
OK, so what do you do. The guy makes too much ($5 million in 2009), and he has no value in my eyes. I guess we have to ride it out with him as an overpriced back up until his contract is up at the end of next year.

Ahman Green:
Rick Smith renegotiated his contract to a performance oriented package. So other than taking up a roster spot I guess it doesn't hurt to keep him. Maybe next year, he can simply come in when in the Red Zone, say 5 touches a game maybe he'll last through week 3.

Chris Brown:
Has a contract through 2009. Best I can tell the contract is minimal in the grand scheme of things. If healthy he's decent, but I don't know if his upright running style compliments Slaton's. I'm startin to like Moats, I thought he had potential, and showed some talent against Chicago.

RB's:
Obviousley Slaton is numero uno. Now what do you do with the plethora of RB's we have in the mix. Who stays, and who goes in this log jam: Green, Brown, Taylor (Did he get cut?), Walker, Sapp, and possible draft picks/FA's. Goodness what a log jam.

Will Demps will also be gone - no doubt. He's been relagated to a special teams player. Dominique Barber plays, Demps doesn't.

Also - if you're talking salary cap - make some room for Steve Slaton's new contract... because he's going to demand one, no doubt.

I'm going to use the stats from http://www.inthebullseye.com/cap2009.html. Some cases aren't as bad as you think, as far as whether we are stuck with guys. Basically, we would save cap money by cutting any of these guys.

He has 2 years remaining on his contract, and $5.4 million left in signing bonus (half of which we're paying next year regardless). If we cut him, the remaining $2.7 million will accelerate into this year, but we save his $3.5M in base salary. Net result: if we cut him now, we save $800K.

There is no cap hit for cutting him. We pay his prorated bonus, regardless, and since there's only one year left on his contract, there's no future bonus that would get accelerated. So, cutting him would save his $4.768M in base salary.

I don't know the details of his contract, but I do remember it being renegotiated to be more friendly, and performance-driven. Based on the InTheBullseye numbers, though, he's scheduled for $4.8M in base salary, which would be worth saving, to offset the just over $2 milion in extra bonus that would accelerate.

We're on the hook for his $400K signing bonus, in any case, but cutting him wouldn't accelerate any more into next year. We save his $1.3M by cutting him.

Geez, I forgot he was even playing for the Texans this year.

Maybe he should have that thing put back on his arm. He played way better last year when he had that cast thing.
