Hey, We have a game to play on Sunday

GlassHalfFull

Hall of Fame
I have been somewhat amazed by how little we are talking about the upcoming Raider's game. This one scares me a bit, because I think we are taking it for granted. Hopefully, Kubiak will not let the players get complacent after their last two big wins.

Anyone have some good input into matchups to keep an eye on?

The best matchup on the field will be AJ on Nnamdi Asomugha.

Mario against Kwame Harris and Cornell Green

Doesnt Asomugha only line up on one side of the field regardless of who is playing across from him? I thought i read somewhere thats how they run the defense

Yessir, I expect at least a buck and a quarter from Slaton.

:fans:
Yep, Raiders are #31 against the run (yardage) and give up an average of 4.7 a carry.

If there were a week to start Slaton on your fantasy roster, I'd pick NOW!

Edit: As of right now, Slaton gets to face 6 of the top 11 rushing defenses this year.

Dunno, maybe one of our resident Raider fans can answer that for us. The way we move AJ around so much I reckon they'll meet up at some point.

He may want to make a statement after his pro bowl snub.:pirate:

Yeah, that still bothers me. It would've been different if Brown was at least somewhat close to Slaton production wise, but it's not even comparable. Bastages!!

AJ was quoted as saying Asomugha would follow him. Nit really sure, though. If they just left him on one side, it would be as dumb as leaving....Petey to face Wayne or Harrison ( or anybody else for that matter) all day long.

I thought about this a few days ago. Really, there are no match ups or good talking points. If it is going to be a trap game or a let down game, that's on the players and the coaches.

Oakland is just a mess.

Oakland IS a mess, but hey Do pose some problems for our passing game. Besides, they've done a number on a couple of playoff teams- Broncos and Jets

Possibly. Favre had a two-pick day (no TDs) and has a worse set of receivers than we do. Even with that, it took a +3 turnover ratio and a 57 yd. OT FG to beat them.

Bottom Line: If we don't lay an egg, we should be fine.

Unless the Texans have a meltdown, which is entirely possible, this should be an easy win for them.

I think most of the fans are revelling in the afterglow of beating the team with the best record in football. I don't think(hope) that is the same story in the locker room. They've got a big goal at finishing 9-7, I'm not into moral victories but finishing the season on a 6 game winning streak and with it's first winning season is huge.

All that said even with the mess the Raiders are they can still present problems for teams. I have a friend who is a huge Raider's fan and he says their are rumors going around that Al MIGHT relinquish some of his GM duties due to health reasons. Raider fans can only hope that is true.

Im a little worried. I personally feel like the season sort of ended last week. Beating the Titans was so high on my wish list, that everything else seems unimportant. I really hope the Texans dont come out flat

I heard on the radio that the last time that we were favorites in a road game was ATL in 2007 (which we lost). This is a potential trap game, indeed. Hopefully they go in there and take care of business. Bring home a 5 game win streak and let us fans help get us over the hump against the Bears. 9-7 would be epic for this season.

Oakland better have Aso mirror AJ or he could get 4 TDs

I can only HOPE AJ gets 4 TDs. My FF team, and my bank account, would certainly appreciate it if he did!:) Playing for the championship this week, and here's hoping MS hits AJ with those throws and not Aso, or anyone else for that matter! Interceptions are deducted points in my league, and this is NOT the game for MS to play like he did against the Meatballs in Sept. I'm nervous!

Not tying to derail the thread but could someone please clear this up with a definitive answer. I’m playing for a fantasy championship and as of now I have AJ starting.

The 4 game winning streak and growing confidence definitely sets this up as a trap game. That said we would have to pull off another Rosencopter to lose this one.

Prediction
Mario has two sacks and Slaton has another 100 yard day.

Texans win, 24-16

that maybe true about the Jets, but they put 30 up on the HoustonTexans-North. Either they match up well against our kind of offense or the Broncos were really flat that day. I hope it was the latter.

what about finishing 9-7?

First, you deserve to lose if you bench AJ. Nnamdi is a phenomenal player, but you don't bench the best receiver in football because you're worried about the matchup.

Second, it's true that Asomugha lines up on the right side of the defense and stays there throughout the game.

Thanks for the info and advice Mailman but I could sit AJ because I have the 4 top receivers in my league. AJ, Larry Fitzgerald, Steve Smith, and Roddy White. Plus Adrian Peterson and Michael Turner, there's a reason I'm in the finals.:coolb:

AJ it is

Championship!!!!!!:trophy:

did you lose a game this year?
no...
better question:
did you RIG the draft?

I'm with you. This game worries the crap out of me. Not only do the Texans have to win a new franchise best 5th in a row, but they have to do a franchise first and win a 3rd road game in a row.

Perfect game for them to come out and lay a turd.

The offense should put 400 on the Raiders easy, if not approach 500 or more. But the Texans will probably find a way to make it a little too interesting.

I'd like to see Slaton have a MONSTER game. Sort of a reward for some of the tough ass defenses he's faced.

Since it's in Oakland, maybe Lester Hayes will be around and Steve can have Hayes pat him on the head, then put his helmet on. That'll keep that sucker on.

I've lost 2 games and no I didn't rig the draft. It's a company league and it’s heavy on defensive side of the ball. So while other teams focused on D, I cleaned up on all the skill players. Last week I smashed the league record. If I win the Championship, I'll retire and go out on top. Here's how my draft went down. Ok now I've officially hi-jacked the thread but its hard not to brag.

1. (3) Adrian Peterson RB
2. (14) Andre Johnson WR
3. (19) Larry Fitzgerald WR
4. (30) Kurt Warner QB
5. (35) Ryan Grant RB
6. (46) Matt Schaub QB
7. (51) Steve Smith WR
8. (62) Michael Turner RB
9. (67) Seattle DEF
10. (78) Nick Barnett DL
11. (83) Kirk Morrison DL
12. (94) Green Bay DEF
13. (99) Jonathan Stewart RB
14. (110) Jon Kitna QB
15. (115) Roddy White WR
16. (126) Ronnie Brown RB
17. (131) Chris Cooley TE
18. (142) Patrick Kerney DL
19. (147) Nate Burleson WR
20. (158) Tony Scheffler TE
21. (163) Adrian Wilson DB
22. (174) Barrett Ruud DL
23. (179) Kris Brown K

Stats after 14 games, NFL ranking in parenthesis

Offense

YPG: (3) Houston, 381 (31) Oakland 261
Rushing: (10) Oakland 118 (11) Houston 116
Passing: (4) Houston 264 (32) Oakland 142
Points: (18) Houston 22 (30) Oakland 14

Defense

YPG: (21) Houston 337 (26) Oakland 362
Rushing: (24) Houston 125 (31) Oakland 137
Passing: (9) Oakland 195 (17) Houston 212
Points: (23) Houston 24 (24) Oakland 25

We score an average 8 points a game more than they do, but our high powered passing offense will be met by the 9th best passing defense in the league. Both teams rush about the same amount of yards, but our rushing defense is slightly better. Slaton will be rushing against the worst rushing defense in the league, but stat wise, ours isn’t a whole lot better. But we’ve seen the Texans stack up against the run quite well several times this season.

Both defenses give up about the same amount of points per game.

Looks like you played against alot of people who don't know what they are doing. No way in Hell that Steve Smith and Turner would have lasted that long in my league, even if it was an IDP league.

Honestly I have not put much thought into this game..I am still excited from last week win and looking foward to the Bears game.
That said we still need to get the W!

This is the stat that worries me.
T/O differential
Raiders - +1
Texans - -10

The Raiders can, and will, beat us if the Texans forget their heads this Sunday. You can't over look any team in the NFL. Just ask the inbreds.

What on earth could anyone ever say that would cause you to bench Andre Johnson for your fantasy championship?
If AJ is playing in the game, you play him no matter what. No matter what team he's playing against.
Sit him??? That's just crazy.

Football Outsiders DVOA has that teams are more succesful running to the strong side against the Raiders.

That sounds a bit odd, 'cause I think the Raiders have bigger guys on that side.

I was checking all the highlights on nfl.com, the runs were distributed quite evenly.

Football Outsiders also had it that the Raiders pass defense is stronger against the #1 WR and the TE, and particular weak against other receivers plus the RBs out of the backfield.

The NFL highlights shows that on the big plays, the safeties and Hall (gone the Redskins, I think) were the culprits, especially #28 Wilson.

The right corner and the middle of the zone are where they are exploited.

But the left side, whenever Nnamdi is not there, was exposed as well.

Let's see how that play out.

I just got a copies of the Broncos, Panthers, and Falcons shortcut games.
I will try to watch them, and if I have time, I will post the observations.

Something to add. The Raiders have a very good special teams. Given their offense, they very much have to rely on winning their field position game. The Texans offense has been able to move out of some sketchy field position situations. That's harder to do on the road.

When you don't have to pass as much against the Raiders because you can run against them so effectively and because they're usually trailing so teams run more, then the passing numbers get a bit skewed.

Isn't there a better indicator out there than yards per game?

Broncos vs. Raiders 1st half.

What an odd game.

Broncos were moving the ball at will.
Clady was beaten 3 times but Cutler was able to scramble away and get rid of the ball.
Fumbles, one questionable throw by Cutler, 2 missed FGs (short ones.)

A punt to the right side and no containment on that side ???
A very fast returner Higgins from UTEP (I liked that guy pre-draft.) returns it for a TD.

The long ball was there all day for Cutler on both sides of the field, he was missing it just barely (at least 6 times.) Raiders are soft in the middle zone as advertised. Besides those instances where Clady got beat, Cutler generally had enough or ample time to throw the ball.

You give Russell some time in the pocket and he can be dangerous. Having WR Lelie helped.

Halftime 10-3 Raiders.

The Oakland Raiders wrap up their 2008 homestand this Sunday afternoon against the Houston Texans. The Raiders enter this matchup having dropped their past three games and are currently 3-and-11 on the season-- third place in the AFC West. The Texans come into Oakland riding a four-game winning streak and are currently 7-and-7-- third place in the AFC South. Kickoff from the Coliseum is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. The game failed to sell out by the 72-hour deadline and will not be shown on local television. The Texans are 3-and-0 all-time against the Raiders, including a 2-and-0 mark in Oakland. The last time the Raiders beat a Houston-based team at home was their 27-7 victory over the Oilers (now the Tennessee Titans) in the 1980 AFC Divisional Playoffs. Former Raiders great Ken Stabler was the starting quarterback for the Oilers in that game.

I probably jinxed the Texans but OUCH

Texans, Raiders in a zone

http://www.ibabuzz.com/raidersblog/2008/12/19/texans-raiders-in-a-zone/
The Houston Texans have only been in existence since 2002, and they’ve played the Raiders three times in the regular season.

But considering the Texans of the last few years have been built using the Denver Broncos as a blueprint, there is more history to Sunday’s matchup at the Coliseum than meets the eye.

For one, Texans assistant head coach Alex Gibbs is both a friend and mentor to Raiders coach Tom Cable. While Cable’s background in the zone blocking system began in 1993, he considers Gibbs to be the foremost authority on the subject, and adheres to his philosophy of getting the most out of offensive linemen.

The Broncos, where Gibbs worked from 1995-2003, have strayed somewhat from a purely zone scheme. But when the Raiders play the Texans, “they’re playing us, we’re playing ourselves, and vice-versa _ it’s the exact same scheme,” Cable said.

Talking early last season about his coaching style, Cable said, “Alex taught me to turn over every stone. You don’t care where they got picked. You don’t care who wanted them, who didn’t want them. They’re yours, and you love ‘em, teach ‘em every day and grind on ‘em every day and see what happens on Sundays.”

The two talk often in the offseason, “although not this week,” Cable said.

You wonder what their conversations were like when Cable was first approached by Lane Kiffin to become the Raiders line coach. While at USC, Gibbs made yearly trips to the school to teach zone blocking concepts to the staff.

Cable came highly recommended by Gibbs, and happened to be available when Jim Mora’s staff was purged in Atlanta.

Maybe its just me but seemed like Dunta was doing his best imitation of the Saturday Night Live subliminal guy...

“Kubiak wants to win, and he wants to win bad,” cornerback Dunta Robinson said. “There’s not a player in this locker room that doesn’t want to win for Kubiak.
“Kubiak is doing his job. Maybe you ought to look at some things around him <RichardSmith>, but you can’t look at him.”

Robinson wouldn’t elaborate on whether he meant coaches, players or both. He was asked specifically about defensive coordinator Richard Smith, who is the target of a lot of criticism from fans and media.

“It is what it is,” Robinson said. “As players, we’re going to work hard and practice hard and get the job done. Maybe it starts with us<NotHardly>. Maybe it starts somewhere else <RichardSmith>, but we have to find a way to get it done.”
