The Houston Texans have only been in existence since 2002, and theyve played the Raiders three times in the regular season.
But considering the Texans of the last few years have been built using the Denver Broncos as a blueprint, there is more history to Sundays matchup at the Coliseum than meets the eye.
For one, Texans assistant head coach Alex Gibbs is both a friend and mentor to Raiders coach Tom Cable. While Cables background in the zone blocking system began in 1993, he considers Gibbs to be the foremost authority on the subject, and adheres to his philosophy of getting the most out of offensive linemen.
The Broncos, where Gibbs worked from 1995-2003, have strayed somewhat from a purely zone scheme. But when the Raiders play the Texans, theyre playing us, were playing ourselves, and vice-versa _ its the exact same scheme, Cable said.
Talking early last season about his coaching style, Cable said, Alex taught me to turn over every stone. You dont care where they got picked. You dont care who wanted them, who didnt want them. Theyre yours, and you love em, teach em every day and grind on em every day and see what happens on Sundays.
The two talk often in the offseason, although not this week, Cable said.
You wonder what their conversations were like when Cable was first approached by Lane Kiffin to become the Raiders line coach. While at USC, Gibbs made yearly trips to the school to teach zone blocking concepts to the staff.
Cable came highly recommended by Gibbs, and happened to be available when Jim Moras staff was purged in Atlanta.
