Where does Buchanon rank?

where would Phillip Buchanon rank in this years draft amongst CB's? just behind Rolle and ahead of Jones & Rogers? he came out a year early from Miami and went 2nd CB in the 2002 draft after Quentin Jammer, Texas. seems like a pretty high ranking to me, maybe worth a 9th or 10th pick even.

included a old mock from 2002 with a link especially for Vinny http://www.redeyesports.com/HPFMockDraft2002.htm

Probably after Rolle and about even with Pac-Man IMO since they seems so alike (smaller guys, good ball skills, good punt returners)...The big difference between them is that Pac-Man is a willing hitter, while Buchanon subscribes to the Deion Sanders philosophy...

:offtopic But did you notice that this mock had Gaffney going 9th overall? Wow...

...and notice that they didnt have Portis in the first round themselves. Every fan from every team pans their franchise for passing on Portis and they didn't see it either. Its how our mocks will look in hindsight. Not all these guys are going to be players on the next level.

I fully agree with you...Every draft is going to have its fair share of busts and sleepers...Nobody knows for certain who is going to be a superstar and who is going to be out of the league in two years...The guys who dominated in college and are being hyped as "the best in the draft" can easily find that they just aren't made for the NFL...This draft could either be fun or agonizing to reflect upon in the future, nobody knows...

but i would say phillip's coverage skills were better than pac-man's. think about that duo of miami cbs. all three would be pretty close and you can throw carlos into the mix as well.

I think we overpaid to get PB. Not b/c he isn't worth a 2 and 3 but b/c of the situation of Oakland. They desperately had to move him and woodson. The fact that he wanted out so bad was going to be a cancer in the locker room.

I think we have put ourself in a situation where we HAVE to trade down now.

We aren't in a situation where we have to trade down, but remember that Cass has said all along that it's not likely we stay put at 13...If "our guy" didn't fall to 13, the plan has always been to trade down...

If I had to rate the 2002 CBs vs the 2005 CBs, I would probably go:

Rolle
Buchanon
Jammer
Jones
Rogers

in terms of where they'd get drafted based on the rankings I've been able to find, most of which having Buchanon rated above Jammer who ultimately ended up being taken before PB...

Looks like we got us a hotdog, they call him "Showtime" - but he is talented. He's not just a talented CB: can you say "bye, bye Moses", cause
this guys is also a very good punt/kickoff return man.
From a local paper out West:
"It should be a good move for Phillip,'' said one league source, adding that Houston defensive backs coach, Jon Hoke, was very familiar with Buchanon, having recruited the former four-sport star at Lehigh High School in Fort Myers, Fla., during Hoke's days as defensive coordinator at the University of Florida. "The Texans have a disciplined coaching staff that should be able to get the most out of him.''

He's not as good as pac man. He had a much easier time covering because at Miami, that pass rush means the ball is gonna be out ASAP, and that means he wasn't required to cover for as long as pac man did.

 I think maybe this means they are looking for the near future as opposed to building down the road . Buchanon should be entering his prime . He's a young vet who should know the NFL ropes but has'nt lost a step .

with pb's NFL experience, speed and return skills if he were in the draft he could be rated the #1 CB overall and a top 6 pick. a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Casserly fleeced Davis enough to insure Turner will be looking for employment before the end of this season, the Raiders have now traded both #1's from 2002, I'd see them drafting Crowder with that 2nd pick and Stanley Wilson CB with 3rd.

atleast it isn't a self-proclamed nickname, then we would just have another kellen winslow on our hands. aslong as he produces i don't care what his nickname is. i don't think i could put jammer ahead of phillip if they were coming out this year and they were the same players as they were back then. quentin was the man, but has disappointed to this point.

According to draft grades I got from SI.com (higher the better):

Carrol: 3.82
Rolle: 4.3
Rogers: 4.32
D-Rob: 4.42
Pac Man: 4.48
Newman: 4.58
Hall: 4.61
Buchanon: 4.63
Jammer: 4.69

I dont know if SI changed their grading system but that's what they are.

So, now that I have some time I'll finish this...

The higher rating the better so Buchanon was graded higher than any other CB to come up over the last couple years, minus Jammer.

The Pack took Carrol (3.82 draft grade) 25th overall last year, we got Buchanon for the 47th and 78th picks.

25th pick - 720 points
47th and 78th - 630 points

Packer fans might not be the happiest right now.

So, if you look at this trade by comparing him to other CBs selected, we got the most for the least. We got the guy with the 2nd most talent (draft grade wise) for what translates into the 29th pick in the draft.

If Hoke works his magic, this will be looked at as a BIG steal.

IF ..... the biggest word in the dictionary :heh:

Im not sure if i like or hate this trade . ask me again come mid-season when we've had a chance to see how well he responds to his "second chance"

I do like the fact that he can perform return duties with take it to the house kind of speed and play a significant role at another position rather than just one or the other which are the two knocks on JJ .(no homerun threat / no benefit other than special teams)

I think SHOWTIME is self-proclaimed

i not really sure. i think i heard deion talking about it on cbs last year and was talking about how good showtime was going to be and how he is working with him. i know phillip idolized him, so either deion gave it to him or is it self-proclaimed.
