Amobi comes to play

Shout out to Amobi for that great stop on the half of "lard and tard" lol. D was solid in spurts today

surely you mean they were great today and only beaten in spurts

the d-line as a whole really played well. everyone made plays- deljuan and amobi foremost but tj, weaver, bulman and mario all made important plays. it wasnt just the mario show for a change

I have no idea what you guys were looking at where Amobi Okoye was concerned. He was being pushed around consistently all day and when he came out and Robinson went in the interior of the line just stiffened up like nobody's business. I think Robinson should be easily starting ahead of Amobi and that if we don't see Okoye bounce back from this "sophmore slump" he's in then will be seriously talking about Okoye busting ala TJ and Babin.

Yes he had one great tackle today. The rest of the afternoon he was being pushed around like a shopping cart. If he doesn't get what he had early last season back I'm going to stop calling him "The Force" and start going with "The Farce" because he's not playing well at all.

Well that's great if there's a logical explanation for his play the past few weeks. Kubiak says there: "Kubiak said. “We’re expecting him to be a big part of us playing better these last three weeks.” and hopefully since that didn't happen this week he'll do better in the last two.

Me, I'd rest him and let Robinson start the rest of the way out. If your first round draft pick is hampered by a high ankle sprain and clearly not playing as well as your undrafted free agent why keep running him out there?

He was in the QBs face several times, and forced bad throws. One forced the int, and another was on 3rd down and forced a punt.

It's nice to see him show up for a change, but that should be an ordinary to bad game for a guy with his talent.

I thought Okoye was awful early in the game and only flashed his ability in a couple of plays in the entire game. When Robinson came in he was disruptive from his first play and drew eventual double teams. Okoye didn't do much but he did have a pressure and a big play...otherwise he was pushed all over the place.

Robinson looks like what we thought Travis Johnson was going to be, a guy who shows both the abiloty to hold the point and be disriptive. He should getting more snaps than any other DT at the moment.

Robinson was great!

Two significant plays by Amobi is something to be encouraged by though. Need to see more of it but he certainly flashed his ability today.

Because of seating situation, I met Amobi's family last season. Talked to them after the game today and they said he is finally beginning to feel like he can play again. I am going to chalk this season up to a Mario rookie season injury kind of deal. He has toughed out a high ankle sprain without quitting. Now maybe the Texans should have shut him down like maybe they should have shut Mario down.

I want to see production next year though.

If we don't get it from him maybe we will get it from Deljuan. Either way I can see progress being made in that spot next season and who knows what could happen in FA and the draft.

Great point. I did notice on the big play by Amobi to stop White in the backfield for a loss that he was between Mario & Robinson. The Titans double teamed Robinson with the C & RG, and tried to have the LG playing opposite Okoye cheat a little & help with Mario too. Okoye deserves the credit for making the play, but part of the reason he was able to make that play was the attention that Mario & Robinson were receiving.

I want to see production next year though.

I think we're all expecting to see some more production from Okoye next year. He'll certainly have help alongside him with Mario drawing double teams & special attention from opposing teams.

I agree, Amobi has been disappointing thus far, just wanted to point out that big run stuff...hopefully it's a prelude of things to come.

The other part of the reason, was he EXPLODED off the ball. The kid
has talent, and a high-ankle sprain. Kubiak/Smith are great evaluators
of talent, so I believe Coach when he says Amobi will be fine.

My thoughts on Amobi are that before today, I don't think I've heard Amobi's name called all season. Then I read the article today about how he's been nagged all along by a high ankle sprain. Then, in the game today, I hear his name called a couple of times.

Anxious to see if his name will continue to get called in the next couple of games.

Just glad to finally see him make a few significant plays in a game. Thank you Amobi for finally being semi-productive in a game.

Do you think he can be converted to to DE? He could shed 30 pounds and be even faster. It is something when DelJuan is beating out Okoye and TJ.

You know, he's so damn young that I can't help expecting him to get better in 2009. The whole thing with Okoye is "upside" and I think that's still in effect. He's a total puppy by NFL standards and he needs strength and weight as well as experience. 2009 is a big year for Okoye. He should start really stepping up and being a force or he'll be TJ2 by the end of the year (presuming there's no injury problem to cloud the issue).

TJ is just a slug. He's depth and not much more. I don't even know if I'd call him quality depth considering Rick Smith has been able to find an almost endless supply of undrafted and street free agents who out play him at almost every turn.

DelJuan Robinson is a bona fide find. That guy is starting for me next week if I'm Kubiak.

I kinda like the idea of Mario, Okoye, Robinson, Bulman/Cochran/Nading as a functioning line.

Amobi made "one" outstanding play at a critical time when he stopped LenDale White but besides that I basically haven't heard the guys name called. All season !
Playing him instead of someone like Robinson reminds me of the same kind of politics that were involved when Capers & crew were protecting their own butts by playing Jason Babin instead of someone else who was more talented but also on the roster at a far lower investment of cap funds.
McNair saw that game yesterday just like the rest of us did and he may want to discuss some of these same issues re tradeoff of return he's getting on his investment for game-day personnel performance with messrs Kubiak & Smith. I know I would if I was him.

I was hoping someone would get into Kubiak's call in show on 610 and ask him why they don't play Robinson more since he is more productive on a ton less snaps than Okoye, and why they won't give him more opportunities if they aren't going to start him over Okoye.

I can't decide if Okoye just isn't bringing "it" or he isn't being used properly. I know he's been hurt the last few weeks, but he's been silent all year. I'm not concerned with sacks. I see teams running all over the plce on us by going right up the middle. The only DT we have suited for "read and react" is Okam, and he doesn't seem to be getting it so far. The scouting reports on him seem to be accurate. Why not just start shooting our DTs a gap and letting the OL react to that? By having them read and react, we're allowing oppossong OL to step back and double team our DE's because we get no pressure up the middle. Defense is a gamble by design. We might as well improve our odds by forcing the O to stop SOMETHING as oppossed to just sitting back and stopping everything. Our blitzes are getting better, but I see O's going to longer snap counts and getting us to commit before they snap the ball.

I wonder how much of Robinson's production is the fact that he has "fresh legs" for this late in the year? Remember how good Darius Walker looked after basically sitting out all year and then getting a chance to play in Nov/Dec...?

I'm not sayin'......just askin'

I just rewatched the game to make sure of what I saw live and he was pushed around easily, pancaked a time or two and didn't overpower anyone....he did have some speed moves that panned out but he isn't strong enough to do much more than run by guys right now...and that's not good enough to be a starting DT in the NFL. If you watch the game you will notice the difference instantly when Robinson comes in. He was disruptive and not forced out of his lane easily like Okoye was made to do....with what looked like relative ease.

I've watched and rewatched several games this year and see the same thing. He's a quick twitch speed rusher and it's obvious. My question is whether or not it would be beneficial to just gamble and have him hit a gap at full speed and either get in the backfield or at least occupy another blocker to free up a DE. D's gamble very single play by trying to counter whatever play the O is going to run. If we pick gaps and shoot them with DTs. we at least increase the odds our DEs face and increase the lilelyhood of a stop in the backfield by a DT.

the Defensive Line play has been pretty inconsistent all year but I chalk that up to poor coaching/scheme. I feel some new blood at DC could be just what Okoye and Co. need.

Follow the Jimmy Johnson DL methodology. Get a stable of DL that can be rotated in and show a variety of looks. Wear a team down with relentless attacking pressure and mix in the blitz a lot more than our current DC does. If we could mix in an opportunistic, attacking, and deep defense with our current cast on offense, we could be something special in 2009.

regardless of what happens these last few games, i am expecting BIG things from our offense next year. they are only scratching the surface of what they could do and are already top 5 offense in the NFL. Mix that with a top 10 defense and your talking playoff games at home next January. I am not a huge Kubiak fan, but he has done a wonderful job with the offense and deserves to be back in 2009.....Richard Smith is a different story altogether.

I was pretty much of the same opinion. But if the coaching is that bad, how can an undrafted free agent practice squader such as DelJuan Robinson come on so strong last Sunday? He's getting the same coaching, playing in the same scheme as Okoye and Travis Johnson.

Okoye reminds me of these high school basketball players who jumped straght into the NBA. Some, like Garnett, Bryant, and McGrady continue to improve and go on to be all stars. Some just never get any better, like Kwame Brown and Eddie Curry. Okoye is looking more like Kwame Brown, at this point.

DelJaun has mostly been in passing situations. A;so, he might be ignoring any coaching and doing what comes natural.:smiliedance:

Not yesterday and I have all of the last three games still on my DVR and can check but he came out in obvious passing situations and was only a rotation player Sunday. He blew up a couple of running plays (like the first play he was in) in his limited snaps.

I didn't have as much time to notice. I was in the stands screaming my heart out. I was going off of when I heard his name called. Honestly, I think the tacks were in pass mode for most of the game. They thought pur secondary sucked almost as bad as our pass rush.

I was at the game too...getting on peoples nerves texting them about how much Okoye was getting manhandled. I'm glad he made a few plays at the end of the game but that didn't change his ugly overall game in my eyes....I just had to re-watch it to confirm what I think I saw.

LOL. I was texting, too. Just a different subject. I think Okoye is being used poorly. I think he would be an excellent gap shooter and make his moves in the backfield. That, by itself, would collapse the pocket and make the QB move. The guys is "dash" fast for a DL. It would make teams account for more than Mario.

Okoye was drafted to be an interior pass rusher. His game is suited around
quickness off the line. However, in this current scheme, his being asked to
hold the point of the attack. When the Texans get their "Haynesworth"
DT, Okoye's game will be on full display, because he won't have to occupy
blockers on every snap.

DelJuan gets some props from ESPN...
In the upset of the Titans on Sunday, the interior lineman made four tackles, three of them for a loss. The Texans hit Titans ball carriers for a loss seven times.
DelJuan Robinson was an undrafted free agent in 2007 out of Mississippi. He spent the bulk of his first year on the practice squad, before he was elevated to the roster for the final game. He was an inactive.
Now he's telling reporters in Houston he's staying in No. 66 -- hardly a glamour number for a D-lineman -- so he doesn't forget how he got where he is.
"DelJuan doesn't talk much," coach Gary Kubiak said. "So, evidently you got a lot more out of him than we do. But, no, he's a young kid with a lot of ability. I remember [former Mississippi State head coach] Jackie Sherrill telling me when he came out, 'You give this guy a chance, he's going to make it in your league.' So, that's where I kind of first found out about him."
"But, he's worked extremely hard for [defensive line coach] Jethro [Franklin] and [senior defensive assistant] Frank [Bush]. He's had his spots where he's done some good things, but I think [Sunday] was obviously a big bright spot in his young career so far to step up and play the way he did. He's our defensive player of the game. He played extremely well."

Actually he had three great plays....don't look up the stat totals though. Never let the facts get in the way of a good foot washing. I posted last week he needs to find a half second or a half of a foot somewhere next off season. Or there won't be a fourth season. So just what is that sack total for Omboi this season ?

Well we'll see. No o-line more pathtic than Oakland's. Potential only feeds the bull dog for so long. Scheme ? Here's hoping they turn the guy lose Sunday. I'm ready for it.

ok, three nice plays and 40 plays where he was dominated, and if you don't believe me, watch the game again and only pay attention to #91...not a good ratio pards. Even David Carr managed to produce 3 plays a game.
