My 2009 Texans mock draft....first ever.

This is the first time I've ever made a mock draft up so you guys be nice.

The Texans curently have the #8 draft spot but I think we'll finish the year drafting about 6th or 7th and I'm proposing a trade down with Detroit.
Detroit would get our #7 pick (worth 1500 points on the trade value chart) and Houston would get from Detroit the 1st round pick they got from Dallas a couple weeks ago, currently the #25th pick (worth 720 points). We'd also get Detroits own 1st pick in the 2nd round #33 (worth 580 points) and the 3rd round pick Detroit got from Dallas as well, #89 (worth 145 points) for a total of 1445 points. Detroit would be giving up 2 picks they got from Dallas and only giving up one of their own picks and gaining another high 1st round pick so they could fill LT and QB in the same draft. Gaining the extra picks, I propose our draft would look something like this:

1. Alex Mack-C-California.
2a. B.J. Raji-DT-Boston College.
2b. Myron Rolle-SS-Florida St.
3a. Greg Middleton-DE-Indiana.
3b. Best OG available (Tyronne Green/Auburn, Trevor Canfield/Cincinnati, Anthony Parker/Tennessee, etc..)
4. Rashad Jenning-RB-Liberty (hopefully still available).
5. Bear Pascoe-TE-Fresno St. (hopefully still available).
6. Andrew Gardner-OT-Georgia Tech.
7. BPA.

Well you banged all of the sore spots for sure. I'm pretty convinced they gotta have a will with one of the first three picks. Might be the senior out of Cal in the third or Freeman with the second....they gotta have one. They're bleeding hard and fast right now at LB.

I'm all over the first two , thats for sure.

Dont think this team needs a Safety as much as many believe , Eugene Wilson has played pretty well in @ the FS. The big question is SS and does CC Brown come back from the broken arm well .... Tho I wouldnt mind an upgrade at the position just not with a premium pick at this point.

DE , I'm willing to take a gamble on Tim Bulman , I think the guy has earned a shot at starting , he's got the rest of the season to prove it. If he continues to play well we can look to fix other positions. If not , we find that guy one way or another ...

OLB is a position that absolutely has to see at least one upgrade , wuite possibly two pending the status of Greenwood(damn I hope he's done here) and Zac Diles injury.

RB .... give me a guy who can pound the ball between the tackles and wear a defense down.

QB .... really this is the wildcard position for the Texans. What the hell do they plan to do with Rosencoptor after the season ? He has one more year on his contract but I seriously think he has played his way out the door here after this year. If Rosencoptor is gone who's Cotton Swabs (yeah , he's soft) back-up? I'd look for a veteran IF I was convinced that Schaub was The Man to lead this team .... at this point I'm not sold on that as he's a turnover waiting to happen tho not on the scale of Rosencoptor. If Cotton isnt the man .... You have to look at drafting a QB with a premium pick either this season or next .... Wonder how far Bomar falls ?

Hey Corrosion, glad you like the first 2 picks. I did address the Safety position with Myron Rolle in the 2nd, the guys a great athlete and very intelligent, and should help in run support as well as coverage. I think CC Brown is gone for us and glad to see him go. Like you I don't think DE is a huge need with Bulman and Cochran playing so well but I think another guy who can maybe be the full time starter at the position is nice to have. I don't think OLB is a major need, and you can't fill all the holes in one draft. Since we drafted LB and CB last year, I doubt we go there again this year. Kubiak will let last years draftees show what they can do. We'll have Ryans, Adibi, Diles, Bentley, Coley, and Thompson next year. If Diles comes back playing like he was and Adibi gets better and continues to learn and play well, we should be alright at the LB's and Bentley adds quality depth. Hopefully Greenwood is gone next year. At RB is picked Rashad Jenning from Liberty, he's 6'1" and 230 lbs. and runs like a bull. He should complete our thunder and lightning combo in the backfield. I agree QB is going to have to be addressed, but you can't fill every hole in one draft and this is a poor year for QB's. I think the Texans need to mandate a weight lifting program for Schaub to add some bulk and toughen him up some, the guy is too skinny to take the pounding.

I could live with it, nice job :shades:

I'm not shy to take Alex in a trade down scenero but who is available @ #8 thats the question? He might still be there early in the 2nd too its very rare for Centers to go in the 1st so I would roll the dice & wait until that 33rd pick if he's still there that is really good value @ need position. I've posted Clint Sintim, OLB Virginia in another thread but he has the makings of one of those move up the draft boards after the end of season ascending prospects. He can flat out rush the QB off the edge from the OLB position, with good coverage & run stopping skills, played in Chris Longs shadow last couple years. I would not be surprised @ all if he is the marked man come next April IF he falls into mid/late 1st rd. he is that good & would make immediate impact on this teams defense.

then you can choose between Rolle (Rhodes Scholer) & big nasty B.J. Raja with Texans own 2nd. I'm not sure whats going on with Middleton, seems like a solid LDE @ one time but what the Texans need is speed & athletic ability to get to the QB off the edge opposite Mario. there are some intriquing prospects depends who falls or is available in the 3rd could be almost any position of need & just take the bpa, but I will mention one touted prospect who should still be there & thats converted TE/DE Connor Barwin Cincinnati. 6-4 255 has 7 sacks, very athletic with good footwork. would begin as rotational situational end, goal line situations on offense & is excellent on special teams, one of those players who has a knack for the ball.

OL is also a good bet in 3rd as well as RB & don't be surprised if the Texans do have all these extra picks they take a QB to develop earlier than expected if one is there they love.

This is an ideal senerio. I would be verry happy if the draft played out this way.

I thought of a couple of minor tweaks. Tell me what you think.

1. Sign Gamble & McAlister in FA
2. trade one of the 3rds & a 2010 3rd to Philly for their 09 2nd. They would do this because they have to pay 2 1st rd. ppicks this year.

RD.1 Raji love this pick
RD2 Mack there is a better chance of him being there tha Raji. If we miss Unger or Luings will be there.
RD.2. Rolle Atheletic S (didn't know Rhodes Scholar)
RD.2. Cushing, Sintim, or Freeman with Phillys pick
RD.3 Hardy I think he's going to fall. Evans Penn St. or Middleton
RD.4 Byars C-G USC Talented injuries drop him this far
RD5 Matthews LB USC I hope he falls this far. Playmking Will, Good size
RD.6 Grady RB Mich. or Ore formerly of Va Tech we seem to like Va.Tech guys
RD7. Melton DE UT or Hunt DE-LB Hou Both are pass rushers

I think you are on to something here .... Raji may shoot up the boards as we get closer to the draft , If T.Cody doesnt come out , he's probably the best player at the position. Good DT's go early .... He may end up a top 10 pick when its all said and done.

As much as I like Mack .... I gotta go w/ the stud DT in the first , knowing full well Mack is gone by the 25th pick in round 1 but like you said , there are alternatives in Unger and Luings and I'd be satisfied with either of them.

Rolle is an underclassman ? Jr. I think .... has there been word he would declare ? Good player .... I could live with the pick for sure.

As for LB's , I wouldnt mind taking a shot with Jason Phillips of TCU tho all those you list would have to be gone .... probably early round 4.

I thought about swapping our 1st and 2nd picks around and taking Raji in the 1st and then Mack or Unger in the 2nd. I think your right Mack has a better chance of falling to the 2nd than Raji and yes I know Rolle is a possibly Rhodes Scholar. We could use some intelligent football players. I don't like Cushing at all, to stiff and slow, Freeman would be ok though but I don't see a LB being picked that high. I think our starters next year at LB will be Diles, Ryan, and Adibi and I don't want to use a high pick on someone that's not a starter. Hardy might fall but I question taking him at all, I've read some things about him having mental issues. If the Texans looked into his issues a little more he's got the possiblity to be a steal in the 2nd or 3rd cause he's got great production in the SEC. I would consider Byers from USC amongst the guards listed as my 3b pick. I'm not familiar with your 6th and 7th round picks but by then it's just BPA and you hope they can make the team and play special teams. I wouldn't mind taking a punter in the 7th round though, cause we're paying Turk over a million a year to punt. We could save a little money with a rookie.
