y don't the texans go after james/alexander

if we have the chance of just giving up a 2nd and 5th pick y dont we get one of these guys who have proven themselves and are worthy of making a real difference in our team

I don't think we should give up anything for a back to pair with Davis. We can just draft one with the pick we would be giving up. If we just had Jon Wells and Hollings I think it would be smart, but Davis is solid enough of a back not to go out and spend your draft picks on an aging player.

IMO it isn't the pick that is the issue it is the contract and cap ramifications. Heck a 2nd rounder for Alexander or James seems very reasonable. But, look at the contract just signed by Lamont Jordan--5 years, $27.5 mil. Guaranteed Alexander and James want more than that. DD is $497 K on the cap this year.

especialy when Drew "Robsyaoutayahouseandhome" is James' agent.

It would be interesting to know what the Colts would really take for James and whether there is any chance he gets Sharpered. If he plays under the franchise tag, he will count $8.1 mil on their cap this year.

Rosenhaus really isn't a bad guy. He's helpful, smart, and gets the job done at all cost. I respect him a lot

The same can be said about lawyers. :heh:

I know he is a very good agent if he wasn't I wouldn't dislike him so much. You never here a fan blast a agent for being terrible and costing their players millions, those are the ones I like :heh:

If you look at the talent level of RBs in the 2nd, you could get a good back at a very low price and let James cripple your division rival by staying with them or leaving them.

or we could keep D.D as the starter J. Wells as the number 2 guy and (?hollings?) as the 3 guy,,,well whatever it is, Davis at this point is very low on our salary cap, and yes he will problably get paid alot more after this season. But give the guy another year lets see his numbers, see if he can stay healthy, and see if the O-Line can give him consistent blocking. before we go spending big bucks on some free agent our waste a draft pick on a running back, when i feel this team has bigger holes to fill.

Man, I hope we stay away from the high$$$ free agent RB's. They took too much pounding to get to be high$$$ FA's and are likely on the downside of their careers.

for a team as "blah" and uncreative as the texans i find it amazing that we have so few needs according to the members of this site. 0-line, not a problem. rb, no need for a pro-bowler since we have a super durable, blocking machine in Davis.

the only need ive seen anyone express on offense is WR. which is fairly odd since the offense is supposed to be a smashmouth running machine. as it is we have a finesse back running behind one of the leagues worst o-lines. while id love to get a WR to compliment Andre, we could use someone like the Edge especially for a measly 2nd and 5th round pick. Last i checked this guy is one of the 2-3 best producers at his position in the game. You want to help Carr, you get a dependable back behind him and a competant line in front of him. We have second stringers on the line right now and runningback that is not and never will be a franchise level player. And our depth behind him is about as solid as the depth we have on the offensive line.

:headbang:
I would like to have Edge or Shaun in Houston just as much as the next guy, but how are we going to get a better o-line if we spend that money on a premier running back???? We just need to be patient and keep building through the draft, which has been and always will be the best plan for this team. Look, it is unrealistic to expect this team to be superbowl bound after their third year or fourth year even, but watch out after their fifth year when Casserly has had all those draft picks and those guys have matured.

You can replace the entire O-line with 1st string pro bowlers and it would still stink at first. The best way to get a better line is to let them play together.
As for RB, WHY should we spend those draft pics on either Edge or Alexander?
We have a good chance of DRAFTING a good back and keeping our salary cap in order at the same time. Do you even bother watching Texans' games?
DD is RARELY brought down by the 1st tackler. He has a lot of power(Think Emmitt Smith). He also has injury concerns, which is why I would like to see another RB get drafted. James and Alexander are in line for BIG TIME$$$$.
Should we wreck our whole team just to get a "name" player? I don't think so.

That would be a bad mistake. :thumbdown For starters they want to much money. Also I watched both of them play against the PATS and they don`t show up in big games. Alexander dropped 2 balls(passes) on 3rd down in the 4th Q which made difference in game against PATS. James was nowhere to be found in playoff game against PATS. He was scared to death of Brewski. Texans Need D-Line and LB`s in this draft.

I'm looking forward to training camp and seeing how Hollings and Wells are going to perform. It's been 2 years since Hollings ACL surgery, so he should be ready to go all-out. We might(and might not) have the back we're looking for under contract already. Something to think about. I would also like to see how DD is going to do. Maybe he can string a whole season together live up to some of the trash he talked last year about rushing for 2,000 yds(like that will happen).

Holy crud people learn to read more than two words/numbers out of a sentence. DD said something like I am shooting for 2000 yds, I want to get 2000 yds, or I am really excited by this new zone blocking scheme and think behind it I can get 2000 yds. It wasn't trash talking like "no RB is better than me", "I am the best of all time," etc. Optimism/hopes are not the same thing as trash talk. I would hope Carr is shooting for 4000 yds next year and AJ is shooting for 2000 yds.

PLANNING on something is a lot different than saying it to the media. That is especially true of a 2nd yr player, a 4th rnd. draft pick no less, saying he is going to do what only very few of the greatest have ever done. 2,00 yds is an admirable goal, but a foolish thing to go around talking about. And DD said " my goal is 2,000 yds. rushing this yr". No if's, and's or but's.

And who says that CC is not working to make a deal for Alexander. It makes sense to me. All during the past 2 weeks he keeps making statments that we might not be able to aquire a started with the 13 pick. Sounds to me like he is working the local media/fans for a possible trade of some kind.

Thank you for proving my point if your memory is correct. That statement is a goal. I don't know about you, but I have lots of goals--run a 5 minute mile, make a mil next year, ride the entire continental divide on my mountain bike. That ain't smack talk or bragging--they are things I would like myself to achieve. Are you really arguing DD would be better if his goal was 1400 yds? Then people would be in here complaining he doesn't even want to be the league leader.

Not at all, dude. All I'm saying is that when you're in his position, that can be seen as inflammatory and get a big bullseye painted on you, i.e. "Bulletin Board Material". Not saying a bullseye isn't already there, but why make it bigger? I would be shocked if every runningback in the league didn't have that goal, but they don't go around talking about. It was a pretty minor point to my post above. Sorry it offended you so much.

Not offended at all. You just happened to take the flak for making a comment a hundred people have made before. On the other hand, with people complaining DD doesn't take enough attention away from AJ, then those folks should hope DD talks all kinds of smack to make the D concentrate on him. Baically, DD expressed optimism, some folks around here got overly optimistic as well and then his goal wasn't reached and it becomes smack talk.

I hope the O-line performs well enough to make oppossing defenses pay attention to Mark Bruener and what he's gonna do.
:howdy:

to sum up....alexander and james would both be a huge hit financially. DD gets the job done and then some. And the rest of the weapons on the offense are there (except maybe a tight end) to help as well. there's no need to throw cash at a big name RB if we don't have to. Buchannon is the perfect example...he was signed because there was a hole, and and impact player was available.....THERE"S NO HOLE AT RB. see what happens this year with DD and evaluate after that on whether he gets the cash or someone else does.

I like James right where he is. He doesn't beat the Texans when we play them (at least not by himself he doesn't) and I like the idea that he takes up a big chunk of Indy's cap. Heck, I hope they sign him again next season to one of those big ol' "We appreciate what you've done for us all these years Edge" type of contracts.

As long as he's taking the money they can't pile on any defensive help and I don't particularly fear Edgerrin James. He's a great back but I think the Colts are weaker with him and no defense then they might be with the defensive players his salary could cover.
