Stay The Course

We've been hearing that for seven years now. I know it is tough, and not very fun to watch. But guys, stay with it. Even in the non positive moments of our team stay with it because after all they are our team. This is our team and it sucks that they suck but don't jump off.

Real soon we will be playing on Monday Night Football and I think it will be a chance for all Texan fans and the city of Houston to remind the NFL what they have been missing. If you are an old Oiler fan, Monday Night Football has presented some memorable moments for us. The one I will always remember is Earl Campbell going for 199 yds 4Tds and a wild card spot against Miami and he clinches it with an 80 yard run. Moon also did some nice things on Monday Night Football along with Ernest Givins and his electric slide.

If we beat the Browns and it can happen, we will have some momentum going into that game.

Just don't stop being a fan. I know we are all mad but just remember this is your team and don't be a punk and stop liking them.

I will never stop supporting and hoping for the best for the Texans. That just simply can't happen. My level of enthusiasm might rise and fall with their record, but not my support.

I will never stop being a Houston Texans fan. However, I am no longer going to partake in koolaide drinking or optimistic hope for this franchise until they can prove that they are worthy of it.

Unfortunately, we are the crappiest franchise in the NFL. Seven straight seasons of sucking and never having a winning season is what it is. No amount of sprinkles or smoke blowing can change that basic fact. The way I feel right now is that we are eventually going to surpass the Saints' extremely sad record of 20 straight seasons without a winning record.

I will continue to follow this franchise, but I'm not going to fool myself about reality.

I think that about sums it up. I might put us over the Lions, but that's about it. I'm still behind the Texans, but I'm not going to let my fandom turn me into a blind homer.

Right now, we're not a good football team. I can say that and still be a fan, right?

About the Lions, I would put our seven seasons slightly above their last seven seasons, simply because we have the 'achievement' of mediocrity with a .500 season.

However, if you compare franchise histories as a whole, the Lions clearly have the edge. They have winning seasons, playoff appearances (and even wins!), 4 NFL championships (along with numerous conference and division championships), and HoF players.

Look you can say RS has to go. You can say that the whole lot of them has to go....but what you can't say anymore that this franchise was any worse off with DC than with out him....you just posted it. And all of you who posted that drivel back then are the same crew who are banging the drums for a quick fix now. It didn't work. those days of wine and roses promised back then have not been in the other pasteur. Didn't work then and it won't work now. Quick fixes do not work unless you get incredibly lucky. You're going to have to dig in with one of these coaches sooner or latter. Now you could fire Kubiak and Smith for the off season bunders this season alone. Or you can give the new guys a couple of years to learn and catch the tallent level up to where it's supposed to be. Up to McNair of course. But the bottom line is the first thing a new guy will do is tear the roster down once again and start over form scratch. Believe anythng believe that. The very moment Bob McNair squeazes off the rounds....were in another five year plan.

The same thing that killed off David Carr is what is Killing the Texans coaching staff now...a general lack of tallent up and down the roster. And out of your own lips....that isnt going to change untill they upgrade the roster and quit missing on free agents. And that will always be true in the NFL. I don't give a good GD who is coaching the defense or the team. The only problem you and this board has is over evaluating the tallent on the roster.

For the entire life of this franchise, no matter where I have gone, I have been the only poor bastard in the sports bar suffering as a Houston fan. Japan, Va, and now NC. In all these years there has NEVER been another one cheering along with me. It's old and I'm really getting tired of putting up with the crap I get every freaking Sunday.

I keep up the song and dance of "at least I'm not a Lions fan" or "at least I'm not a Raiders fan", but damn, it's getting tougher to keep it up every Sunday. This past Colts game I saw and had absolutely no excitement about it whatsoever. Just sat there with Colts fans in my face waiting for Sage's next big screw up, at least that's something I can count on.

I've held off the bitching and moaning because I hate being that way and hate hearing it but damn, I'm freaking beat down right now.

These threads pop up at one point in time EVERY SINGLE season.

"Things look bad. Don't stop being a fan. Believe in the Texans!"

Rah rah rah, ad nauseum.

We are all addicted to this piece of garbage team, though for the life of me I can't understand why. I don't think we need a reminder to show our support. If anything, we should have threads saying "Save yourself, watch something else on Sundays!"

But alas, our addiction will prevail. Maybe someone should do a study on the brains of houston sports fans. Theres definitely something wrong with us

I am one of those glutons for punishment I suppose, but I do agree with what DB and most have said about facing reality....although denial was much happier place.....

Here's your moment of "optimism." The Texans defense is performing WORSE than the 2005 defense. They have one more win than that 2005 team with more games to go.

If they could get a defensive coordinator who wasn't a boob maybe they could put something together.

If you don't think Richard Smith is a complete freaking joke, then watch the video of him in this Fire Richard Smith post I compiled a while back. He is a ridiculous coach.

Know in your heart that:

1. It is times like these when teams need their fans the most. They don't need you when times are great--they will have plenty of fans when that time comes.

2. Rooting for a losing team builds character. Which means we have plenty to spare for the rest of our lives. I do take comfort that though the Texans have experienced plenty of suckage, it is not the hopeless kind of suckage you get when your owner is crazy and you are waiting for him to die (Al Davis) or a cheap bastidge (Mike Brown). Houston is a city where athletes like to live--eventually the team will figure it out--hopefully that is a time that is sooner rather than later.

Of course we would prefer for the Texans to be winning. It would be nice for the Monday night game for the Texans to win against the Browns.

I don't know anything about "another David Carr moment" or whatever you’re trying to imply that's supposed to mean. [Funny you should even mention that name, but I suppose there is no shelf life on a mancrush.]

And to be honest, I think you've been drinking bong water again because I'm not a talent evaluator (and I don't play one on t.v.). Confusion is just a state of mind, though, and I know it all too well myself.

I am merely a fan of a pitiful franchise, and I react to what happens on the field (as opposed to projecting what I think will happen or acting like I have any, much less all, of the answers).

Perhaps you do not give much credence to coaching and front office personnel making much of a difference. I defer you to the 2007 Miami Dolphins, with their 1-15 record and all, and the fact that the same team a year later is now 6-4 under the leadership of one Bill Parcells. If that's not screaming prime example of what a coaching and GM upgrade can do for a team, I'm not sure what would suffice. I think Dolphin fan just pointed and laughed at your five year plan.

I like Kubiak...as an offensive coordinator. Unfortunately, we are his training ground to show that he's yet another assistance coach that can't handle the duties of being a head coach. Half of our team is in great shape - the side he influences - while the other half has fallen on their asses. If the head coach decides to keep a coordinator on the staff in spite of clear evidence of epic suckatude, then it speaks volumes about the head coach. The buck stops there, be it coaching decisions, player acquisitions, or whatever. At the end of the day, you have to step back and look at the bigger picture and just face the facts as they are presented to you.

You know, I've never watched that interview before and I have to be honest about my reaction to it. As much as I've judged Richard Smith for the performance of his defense I can't say I was prepared for that mumbling disjointed series of mixed metaphores and wanna-be catch phrases. My heart literally fell because now I know that not only is the man not qualified for the job he's in and clearly incapable of elevating himself to the needed level but this is also incredibly obvious to anyone who may have ever seen him speak.

That Gary Kubiak hired this guy after having worked with him before says volumes about his judgement and they are not volumes of "good".

This was distressing to say the least.

I feel for you, I have lived out of Texas a few times and always have to deal with cocky fans, here is what my resume looks like:

97-98 - Ft. Collins, CO - Broncos Superbowl, Avalanch Cup

2003-2006 - Boston, MA - 2 Pats Superbowls, 1 Red Sox WS

2007-Present - Pittsburgh, PA - Nothing yet, but I am still here expecting

so....

Lived in Houston 24 out of 30 yrs - 2 championships (Rockets) witnessed
Lived outside of Houston 6 out of 30 years - 5 Championships witnessed

Either I am good luck to other teams, or something is wrong with Houston Sports. Probably a little from Column A and a little from B. Oh well, maybe someday.....

Geez, I've been in pain but at least I haven't had to suffer up in Beantown.

I left Houston in 93, just in time for the Rockets first championship. Was great to watch them play the Knicks at 3 in the afternoon in Hawaii.

I haven't been anywhere with any sort of dedicated fan base to deal with, instead it's pretty much a sure thing to face down fans from the opposing team every week.

The best I have dealt with were, suprisingly enough, Eagles fans. The worst... Jags.

I'll never stop rooting and supporting the Texans. There's just literally nothing I can think of that would make me stop being a Texans fan. I was raised in the Houston suburbs and no matter where I've gone, I will root for the Texans... when I was in Los Angeles for three years, it was hard to see Texans games, but I followed them online... I did whatever I could.

I heard some fans on the call-in radio shows say they were just going to start rooting for the Cowboys instead. Good riddance, and whenever the Texans turn the corner and finally become a winner - I will welcome you back on the bandwagon with open arms - then push you off into oncoming traffic. Seriously - anyone who does that is the scum of the Earth in the sports world.

Eventually, we'll get there. I honestly think Kubiak is the man to take us there, but even if he's not - we'll get there. Fans and coaches come and go, but the FANS should always be a constant. We have to do our part, and when I see all this nonsense about staging walkouts at the MNF game, it just makes me want to throw up. It's bad enough that we can't get in our seats for the start of the game - but to talk about walking out in protest? Come on.

I realize the product on the field is inferior right now, but if we want to earn the respect of the nation as great fans up there with the Packer fans, Redskins, etc., then we have to just suck it up and not bend in whatever direction the wind blows us.

We'll get there, and when we do - it's going to be SO much sweeter for those of us who have been there and always will be. It will also be sweet to scrape the remains of the bandwagon jumpers off the sole of my shoe.

Can you imagine being Mario or Demeco or Dunta and having to work in this environment when they KNOW it isn't working and contracts are going to be up soon? If Richard Smith is still DC we may be saying adios to those three guys!

Your positive outlook motivates me like no other on this board... then again it could just be the booze talking.

Watching Texans football is like a kick in the balls. Painfull, yet mildly entertaining.
