Jimbo Fisher type of deal between Mack Brown and Will Muschamp:

The University of Texas has struck an agreement with Defensive Coordinator Will Muschamp that will keep him in Austin and eventually lead him to the head coaching position for the Longhorns, Athletics Director DeLoss Dodds said on Tuesday. Details of the contract are still being finalized but it will start with Muschamp's salary being raised to $900,000 on January 1, 2009.

Great move to ensure they don't lose Muschamp - because they were definitely going to lose him in the upcoming off-season. Mack Brown has stated he intends to finish his contract at UT... but whether or not he does - this just keeps Will around.

I think it's a very smart move by the 'horns, and a GREAT move by Will. He's going to get a huge salary bump, and he won't have to take lesser jobs... all he has to do is keep improving the defense, and then walk in to what I think is the best coaching job in the country.

I wonder if they'll hook up Major somehow? Keep him around and guarantee he gets an OC job down the line?
 
Great move. Muschamp is a good defensive coach and now can also focus on learning how to be a head coach.

It has really worked out for Florida State. It takes the uncertainty out of it for the recruits. Bobby can tell the recruits that he doesn't know if he will be there for all 4 years of the recruit's career, without worrying about losing the recruit, because Jimbo is there.

What Jimbo Fisher is doing now is learning how to deal with the boosters, the AD, and the President of the University T.K. Wetherell.

I think a lot of the reason he returned to Texas was he had his sights set on replacing Mack Brown .... Makes me wonder if the two of them will be able to co-exist.

Major isn't ready to be a head coach. I think he returned to Texas with the hope of getting to be an OC, padding his resume, and then pursuing a head coaching job. I think Brown stays another 3 years and grooms Muschamp. Davis stays an extra year and grooms Major to be OC. I see Major sticking around 2-3 years as OC and then landing a head coaching job.

I wasnt saying I thought he was ready now .... we all know he's got a long way to go down that road .... I was just assuming Mack Brown would be there for quite a while longer ....
 
Texas should be able to kick ass in recruiting this year. I'm sure they'll clean up alot of excellent defensive players.......Muschamp got alot of positive PR/air time pretty much this entire season and I'm sure he'll be very attractive to alot of kids. I see Texas building a SEC type defense.......very big/physical....but yet still very very fast.
 
Major was an OC @ Rice & Alabama. He was very good at it too.

I think he wanted the HC job when Mack retired.

I hope he doesn't learn anything from Greg Davis. Conservative play calling.

Major was a OC in name only at Alabama. Saban ran the offense and Major had little say. Why else would he leave a winning program to take a assistant position?

Because Texas is also a winning program and his Alma mater? And because Nick Saban is an insufferable asshole?

If he was running the offense at Bama, he could have gotten another OC job somewhere else, but he chose to go back to Texas and take a big pay cut because he wanted to back to his Alma Mater?? Don't you think if he made his bones at another school as an OC he'd have a better chance to take over for Mack than coming in as an assistant having to work his way up?

C'mon, Texas is a good program, but no one is going to take that big a leap backwards just to work at thier old school.

Todd Graham would say otherwise about Applewhite running the offense and with what hes done at Tulsa I would almost believe him. Can't take anything away from Major though, everywhere he has been has been productive offensively.
