johndoe's 2009 Texans Draft

RD 1- James Laurinaitus LB Ohio State 6-3 240
Ray Maualaga will be gone when the Texans pick, but the next best LB will probably be available. We need a playmaker on defense and the LB from Ohio State can be exactly that. He can play any of the three LB positions but would probably play on the weak sides for the Texans. He is fast and can lay the wood. Teamed with Demeco and Diles our linebacker corps would be vastly improved.

RD 2- Greg Hardy DE Mississippi 6-4 265
Orakpo is tempting in the 1st but Hardy in the 2nd round would be a great pick. The guy had 10 sacks last year and with opposing teams paying attention to Mario, Hardy could be the end that the Texans have been needing for so long.

RD 3- Michael Hamlin S Clemson 6-3 205
FS is a position that rookies are known to be able to step in and immediately contribute. Many of you will disagree with me and say we should take a FS in the 1st but I think we can still get a quality safety in the 3rd.

RD 4- Nate Davis QB Ball State 6-2 217
QB is a possibility earlier in the draft but if we could pick the gunslinger from Ball state in the 4th, it would be a great pick. The guy has a freaking cannon for an arm and with Rosenfels in the last year of his contract and Schaub's inability to stay healthy, Davis is a good pick here.

RD 5- BPA

RD 6- BPA

RD 7- BPA

Unless we trade back, I don't really want one in the first.

If Nate Davis falls to the 4th I will crap my pants if we don't take him.

I think we'll be in position to draft a better LB than Laurinaitus. Curry, Spikes, and Maualuga (in that order) before Laurinaitis.

hmm...interesting. i consider the LB's to be as follows:

1. maualuga
2. laurinaitus
3. curry
4. spikes

i might take a look around and see what the so called professionals think about the LB's...

Laurinitis is a great pick in my opinion. I wouldn't be surprised at all if we call out a safety's or DT's name come draft day either though. In my opinion Cody would create so much havoc alongside Amobi, Mario, and possibly Bullman or Cochran (or another drafted player). Of course from our position it would most likely be a reach so trading back (sounds familiar, doesn't it?) and picking up another pick while securing a solid player would still be great.

Davis is likely to stay next year. If he declares, he is a potential 1st round guy, with the second round being his bottom end projection.

Cody pending he declares is my top priority . As for taking a Safety in the first .... I think thats a bad decision as there is more value to be had in other area's .... DE , DT , LB , CB and quite possibly QB (tho its a longshot).


To prioritize the needs :

1)DT or DE top of the list , filling the other later in the draft or via FA.
2) OLB .... the Texans LB's outside of Ryans are total suckatude.
3)RG ... Brisel ? ugh
4) Safety .... I've seen enough of the poor angles and Olay tackling attempts to last me a lifetime.
5) Center .... Meyers is too light in the pants. This would be much higher on the list if not for the total ineptitude of the defense.


I'd say that the DL needs the most attention followed by OLB then Safety and RG / C,.

6. QB...

You get what you get in the sixeth. They can't go to war in '09 with these two as our only options. Can't do.

I'm with you on being frustrated with our inconsistent QB play. But the team won't draft a QB at #6. One because this isn't a good QB draft. Two because despite the QB play, the Texans still have a pretty dynamic offense. DEFENSE, DEFENSE, DEFENSE!!! This needs to be a complete defensive draft, save probably a Center in the later rounds. Safety is the weakest position on the team. Ferguson and Wilson have filled in okay, but the Texans need a young ballhawk at FS in a major way. The team has never had solid safety play. The second position of need is defensive line, whether it be DE or DT. Amobi isn't panning out yet, and Travis is what he is. Okam is still a project, Robinson needs seasoning, and Zgonina is too old. Weaver is a joke, but I do like Buhlman.

I say draft a safety in the 1st round, like Taylor Mays. 2nd round, DE or DT. 3rd round, another corner. 4th, another OLB. 5th, 6th, and 7th, a center, another DT or DE, and 7th another LB.

I'm tired of taking guys like Brink who will never be good enough (physically before anything) to play in the NFL, and expecting them to develop with Kubiak over 3-4 years. This is how we end up putting our QB situation off each year. I don't want a QB this year at all unless it is Tebow. Otherwise, I wait until next year and I use this draft to do the smart thing and fill the other holes. Enough with this thinking that a 6th round project QB is going to work out the majority of the time. Brink isn't Brady. Nobody is Brady. Talent is talent, and very rarely is that beat out. Enough with it.

I'm really liking Brandon Spikes. He is probably the best pass rushing LB in the draft, imo. I think come draft day he's going to shoot up the boards like fellow SEC LB Jerod Mayo did last year. No way he lasts to the 2nd rd like I originally thought... or else he'll become another Demeco Ryans.

I would try to trade down & take (Raji who I really like) & get an extra 2nd.

With the two 2nds I hopefully get lucky & take E. Brown & Cushing.

If I couldn't trade down I would take Cody.or Curry

Spikes is a hell of a player.

I prefer Curry for the Texans cuz he is just mean as hell on a football field. Something that our team lacks completely.

I really like these two pikcs in rounds 3 and 4. I think Michael Hamlin in the 3rd round is realistic and also good value.

I don't think Nate Davis will be available in the fourth round. He is one of the better QBs I have seen this year and I put him in my top 5 no doubt.

I would be very happy with Laurinitis or Malauga.

Hollbrook and Danniels have a shot at being there. Daniels can be sage right now. Never going to be a sixteen game Qb....but he isn't going to get you beat five times in a row either. Hollbrook's only problem is that he is in New Mexico and no one watches him. He's not that far away from where Flacco was this time last year. Not at all. However, I do not know whether he plays golf or not.

I'm not saying they will not scout Taylor Mays and fall in love with him. However, in thirty five drafts the Denver Broncos have only taken a safety high twice....and only once in the first round. Kubiak is gone you have a shot. Other wise, I wouldn't get my hopes up. Moore is not an option. He doesn't tackle very well. They won't draft him.

Im more impressed by him each time I see him.He is really good at dropping into coverage. Also reminds me of Demeco. Not a physical freak but has very good instincts, quick to the ball.

Brandon Spikes is a MLB, same position as DeMeco. makes strong cuts but change of direction & quick flitch explosion less than what the Texans seek from the OLB position. I'm almost certain the Texans address the DL in the first as high as they're picking unless they trade down, & I would not trade down & pass on a talent like Cody. but OLB who can play the run & rush standing up off the edge is a distinct possibility in the 2nd. even if the big names are gone like Cushing or Curry they're still some under the radar difference makers who fit what the Texans lack on the edge. Clint Sintim is such a target, excellent size to really punish, get up the field as well do those finesse things like coverage. He also fits the 3-4 OLB profile, leds the ACC in sacks 9 1/2, is a playmaker who was lost in the shawdows behind Chris Long who was drafted #2 overall last season. He is the type of player the Texans need, if they stay with a 4-3 or switch to some 3-4 alignments.
In the 4th rd. depending on Adibi's progress report they could take a stab at another WLB like Rico McCoy, Tennessee, who can also flat out fly, on the small size too but is excellent in coverage skills yet physical enough to be a solid run stopper.
