Chronicles Justice "quantifies" size of Smith & Kubiaks FA mistakes

Now about those personnel mistakes.

For instance, Anthony Weaver, Jacques Reeves and Ahman Green.

Gary Kubiak and Rick Smith committed almost $40 million to three players who have made only a minimal contribution to the Texans.

Wait, there’s more. Rosevelt Colvin and Chris Brown each will get around $1 million this season, and neither will set foot on the field.

And there’s Matt Schaub. He has started and finished just 13 of 25 games since the Texans sent a pair of second-round picks to the Falcons for him. By the end of the season, he will have collected almost $19 million.

Good thing McCair is a billioniare, because the dynamic duo is putting a serious cash-burn on his capital in FA acquisitions with very little return on his investments. The possible exception may be Schaub, but the QBs durability issues may ultimatel trump any positive benefits we've got from his performance on the field.

Reeves has made a huge contribution to the Texans. Just not the kind we want though.

Our opponents should foot the bill for his salary. "Thanks for not looking back and finding the ball --- YET AGAIN --- here's a million."

This happens every single season to every single football team. It's a part of the game. This shows Kubiak and Smith aren't perfect and don't have a magic crystal ball. The key is how do they learn/react from those mistakes. Weaver? yet to see but his bags might be getting packed this offseason. Reeves? I'm giving him more time to take to the team, he's clearly shown the best ability to cover the wr than any other cb on our team. The problem is him locating the ball, this needs to be corrected during the latter half of the season and during the offseason- its on the coaches. And then Green, they took a risk b/c of his health. They knew that going in. Green's been injured and they've somewhat mitigated future losses by restructuring his contract. Colvin and Brown? I see risk/reward for signing those players to heavily be in the Texans favor. Doesn't look like they panned out but they didn't break the bank for either... these guys are NFL vets so you can't pay them rookie salaries.

The Texans current FA contract team of Rick Smith/Chris Olsen were not here for the Anthony Weaver signing which is clearly the worst signing of Kubiak's tenure. Green and Reeves have at least had SOME positives for their bills.

The Weaver signing was made when Casserly/Dan Ferens were still negotiating the contracts.

Greir has been the guy that has been over FA since our inception.

He has done a fine job.

I cant find the sarcasm icon

Lets ignore that every team has FA signings that don't workout, it is how it is. some work and some don't. ALso, **** fails to mention the players who do workout; like ... Eugene Wilson, Wil Demps, Kevin Walter, Andre Davis, Vonta Leach and Ephrim Salaam. The jury is still out to some on Cochran, Bulman and Bently but they have played better than guys like Weaver and TJ.

In other words typical piece of crap writing by rj and the chron staff.

Justice is a tool.

That said, the "big" free agent signings by this regime have not worked out. They seem to be far better at identifying guys that can outperform meager expectations than they are at identifying top talent that can play at all.

This is why I think the fans should STOP begging our team to make a ton of big FA signings!!! Imagine how badly we'd be in cap hell with nothing to show for it when we've got a team full of Weavers :(

Weaver has been the biggest bust out of them all. Green has been injured so thats why we have got nothing out of him. Weaver has been on the field for pretty much every game and got what 3 sacks in 3 years thats terrible for a de I don't care who you are.

It was still dumb to give Green all that money at his age.

I still go back to the bad draft history. 1st rounder Babin, 1st pick in 2nd round for Gafney, 2nd rounder for Hollings, 2nd rounder for Joppru, 3rd for Morency.

Our first picks in the expansion and NFL draft pretty much laid the road by which this franchise has traveled since its inception...

Expansion = Tony Boselli

NFL = HWSNBN

thats more or less exactly what we have had all these years...Todd Wade, Charlie Clemons, Ahman Green, Robaire Smith, Stacey Mack, Morlon Greenwood, ect...the best FA signing ever is probably Steve McKinney. In 7 years of running a franchise this is weak as hell, nothing against Steve since he did a decent job on balance.

Its pretty sad that we have to throw big FA $$ at these caliber players. We all keep waiting for the day that we can land a real "big fish" in FA but I guess that day wont come until we consistently reel in draft classes like the one we had in 06.

Mario, DeMeco, Winston, OD, Anderson....ahhh what a great draft :)

But sadly, the good teams pull in similar drafts consistently while we've only had one good draft top to bottom since our inception :(

We just dont know how to pick em i guess
I dunno, but maybe its more like we don't have much to pick from ? In other
words, the vast majority of the best FA prospects aren't interested in coming here because they want to sign with a playoff contender and the Texans certaily don't offer that opportunity.

Good points. Why would you expect better performance from career backups just cause we sign 'em?

You are absolutely right. We should just continue signing under performing backups and washed up veterans and give them exhorbitant money.....

Agreed .... I have not been and am not a Rick Smith fan. How many times have I seen people on this board post about his "genius" free agent signings, etc & I just want to know where they are?

LOL at this thread.

We get the usual Justice and Chron bashing, but no one seems to disagree with what he has to say.

The guys that get signed off the street usually come in and produce almost immediately (A. Davis, Bulman, Cochran, Demps) while the "big-name" signings (Weaver, Reeves, Green) have just cashed checks.

At this point drafting Amobi over Willis, beason, and Quinn is probably the biggest offseason mistake

Hate on Reeves all you want (and I will) but he is probably the second best DB on our roster besides Eugene Wilson

I'n not so hot on Quinn....but D Reeves is already one of the better CB's in the NFL and would be the best DB on our roster right now.

I think I just got Darrell Revis and Reeves all mixed up but I guess it's all the same basic point at the end of the day.

and Morlock Greenwood

Richard justice is such a joke. Green was a known risk, but Weaver had all the credentials you look for in a veteran at the time of his signing. It's true we spent too much money on Green & Weaver, but let's take a look at all the veteran signings & trades by Rick & Gary (after January 26, 2006) before we crucify them. I'm sure I've missed some, but it's funny how some writers can make a sensational story out of a couple of mistakes.

BAD MOVES - With the exception of Green & Weaver, we haven't spent much on bad moves.

Michael Boulware (S) - I believe Babin was coming on strong.
$ Ahman Green (RB) - Broken down ol' War Horse.
$ Anthony Weaver (DE) - Huge disappointment at DE.
Chris Brown (RB) - Maybe he can turn it around, but looks like a bust.
Rosevelt Colvin (OLB/DE) - Was a solid signing that didn't work out.
Quinn Gray (QB) - Kind of wish we had kept him & traded Sage for the 3rd.
Samkon Gado (RB) - A stopgap move that didn't work out.
Eric Moulds (WR) - Never quite worked out.

GOOD MOVES

Matt Schaub (QB) - If not for his injuries, Matt would be a homerun trade.
André Davis (WR) - Homerun.
Will Demps (FS) - Homerun.
Joel Dreessen (TE) - He's a keeper.
Nick Ferguson (DB) - Solid DB.
Vonta Leach (FB) - Solid FB.
Sage Rosenfels (QB) - He's a solid backup QB.
Ephraim Salaam (LT) - Is a solid backup LT.
Matt Turk (P) - Homerun.
Kevin Walter (WR) - Homerun.
Eugene Wilson (DB) - Looks to be a homerun.
Jeff Zgonina (DT) - Has done everything he was brought in to do.
Jeb Putzier (TE) - I wouldn't call this a bad move. We just upgraded the position with OD.

THE JURY'S STILL OUT ON THESE MOVES

Chris Myers (C) - Starter, but I'm not real impressed so far.
Kevin Bentley (LB) - Looks good so far.
Mike Brisiel (G) - Adequate starter.
Tim Bulman (DE) - Still too early, but he's looking good.
Rashad Butler (OT) - I'm surprised he hasn't stepped up yet.
Ryan Moats (RB) - Looks good so far.
Jacques Reeves (CB) - He's a great cover corner, but needs to locate the ball more often.

Too many homeruns there pards.
Andre Davis...journeyman. Can't start for most teams.
Will Demps? journeyman. Wouldn't start for most teams.
Dreessen? eh, solid back up but could be replaced easily.
Ferguson? journeyman
Rosenfels? Averages a turnover a quarter...another journeyman
Turk? Better than our really lousy epansion kicker but was just another waiver wire guy who has been around a while...journeyman.
Walter? Traded for him, not a FA pick. Good job none the less.
Wilson? tweener who is a good depth player but isn't a great starter at any position.
Schaub so far is Chris Chandler without the nice long ball.

Who is the real difference maker? no one really...just a collection of average players who have enough skills to be a reserve on most teams, but nobody who is a long term starter outside of Leach, Schaub and Walter....and I'm not exactly sure if Schaub is going to make it past the MASH unit enough to count on him.

Perhaps "Homerun" wasn't the appropriate term to be used, but neither was Justice labeling Gary & Rick's veteran moves as mistakes while omitting the good moves they've made. They were all solid moves that have made solid contributions to the team. These players will, at the very least, give us some quality depth in the future. If Justice would open his eyes he could see that the team is building through the draft. Eleven of our current starters came through the draft & if you add Dunta, C.C. Brown, & Diles to the mix, that'd be 14 starters with 9 of them being selected since Gary came on board. But, that's just my opinion.

A few missing off the top of my head:

Mike Flanagan, Brad Bedell, Jordan Black...

I'd say the "Bad" list is a little longer than shown. Some of the players are nothing more than forgettable, I guess.

Yeah, I forgot about Flanagan & Black. Bedell wasn't signed for much if I recall correctly. I guess the whole point of my post was to show that we've had quite a bit of success in free agency. We just suck when it comes to the big names.

Good points. Why would you expect better performance from career backups just cause we sign 'em?

It's all relative. Guys like Bulman, Maddox, and Cochran get opportunities here because our other players suck. If Travis Johnson did anything to live up to his draft position, Maddox would never have seen the field. Heck, even Thomas Johnson made a few plays at DT a couple years ago, and I don't even think he's in the NFL anymore. If Weaver and/or Babin had lived up to expectations, Bulman and Cochran would never had seen time on the field. We've never spent a 1st day draft pick on a safety that I can remember, so guys like Demps and Wilson get chances here. Etc., etc., etc.

Hate on Reeves all you want (and I will) but he is probably the second best DB on our roster besides Eugene Wilson

That's about like boasting that you can limbo under the St. Louis Arch.

Yep, Reeves is terrible and gets burned all the time. He actually occasionally makes a play though, which is different from Bennett and Faggins who usually just get burned all the time without making a play.:gun:

I'd say Bennett makes about as many plays as Reeves, except Bennett gets less time on the field. But yeah, we have a collection of stiffs in the secondary.

I got a question:

Why is Roosevelt Colvin thought of as a bad signing? So what he cost $850-K in cap space. Everyone agrees that the team needs a passrusher opposite Mario, and the team took a chance on a play who has had some success in that area. By most accounts, from what I recall reading on here, he was thought of as a good signing (not great). What would have been bad is if he was kept over Cochran or Bulman at this point by the way they are playing.

Every team signs guys like Colvin in hopes of improving the team and when they do not workout in training camp. Again the bad move would have been to keep him instead of releasing him and taking this minimal cap hit for one year and one year only.

P.S. Wes Welker was only a return guy with the Dolphins, so I am sure before last year that move looked like an oh well. Just because the player was a journeyman does not mean he is not a good decent player, he just may not have got his chance.

That's a good point. The real tragedy would have been keeping Colvin on the roster. Though some would say that signing Colvin kept the Texans from pursuing another pass rusher. I don't know if that's true or if their was a better option available. And really, a free agent signing of the reincarnation of Reggie White wouldn't have stopped this season from turning into a train wreck.

I've noticed that seems to happen when he gets faked a little. Reeves has mad catch-up speed. If he would JUST stop worrying about losing the receiver and look for the ball (because this guy can catch back up anyway), he would be great (at least in pass coverage). It would make a HUGE difference for him and this team.

Can't SOMEBODY get that idea into his thick skull? :foottap:

Probably not. The ability to turn at the proper time is largely dependant on knowing when a player is making a subtile move to go for the ball. In a way, it has to be a "natural" ability because the split second it takes to process, "oh yeah he just slowed slightly" or "he just tilted his head" and coach told me to turn my head when that happens, is going to yield what you see from Reeves now.

He usually doesn't turn his head at all, because he's so close to the receiver that he's afraid he'll run right into him. I mean he's closer to the receiver than the receiver's shadow.

I saw Reeves make a great play on a long throw to the endzone line, because he was so far from the receiver (for once) that he actually looked for the ball. The closing speed he showed was awesome. I'm just saying he needs to lay back just a little and start looking a little earlier than he "thinks" he should. Kinda like a batter that needs to start swinging a little earlier, because he's hitting everything foul down the right field line.

And on a side note, how many draft picks have we squandered.....

Babin
Puchannon

Schaub (to be determined)

But I hate watching this guy fall down, he looks like a scarecrow full of bowling balls.

He's being good cop this week. He just doesn't get it. We hate his guts today. We hate his guts tomorrow. We're all waiting for the obituary or news story he died on the toilet, wearing a dress. With the gerbil struggling to get out.

You can look it up if you want....I said it was a bad idea to sign a thirty something RB at the time. Now y'all know why.

What do they call that little thingy that they make the new band guys use to keep rhythm. metronome. They need to tie a metronome to the guys back when he practices. No doubt about his speed. The guy has no sense of rhythm. Tick -tock. Tick -tock.

I think our new policy should be that we only get new players through the draft. And if we're going to trade players away, it should be for draft picks. We seem to have better results with draft picks than we do with free agency / trades.

Why is Roosevelt Colvin thought of as a bad signing?

Well, it's two-fold for me. First of all, they gave $1M in guaranteed money to a guy that didn't make the team. That is a complete waste of a million bucks. Now, a million bucks isn't going to matter much, so whatever. But that brings me to my 2nd point, which is we seem to sign guys that the former team knows are spent and know better than to sign. Examples include Jacques Reeves, Jordan Black, Mike Flanagan, Chris Myers, and Buchanon via trade. I'm probably missing a couple as well. Some of these guys don't generate much interest around the league, so the indicators are there.

Furthermore, these players take away reps from guys that might turn into contributors. I would much rather have seen Adibi or Bentley getting those reps in TC.

So the million bucks is not as big a deal as the trend.

I wouldn't be so hard on Reeves just yet. Yes, it's frustrating seeing him get burned, but we have to take into consideration that this is his first year as a starter. Not knowing what the coaches are telling him to do, I could speculate that they're telling him to stick to his guy like glue, which is what he's doing.

With Rhodes working with him, I do expect to see his early inability to locate the ball to be corrected as the season wears on. As some have alluded to, Reeves might not be an instinctive player, but he can be taught to look for signs that a receiver is making a move on the ball. That's just a matter of studying game film on your upcoming opponents & learning their habits.

Right now Reeves has a reputation around the league of not being able to locate the ball, but I'd be willing to bet you that most DC's are watching very closely to see when he starts correcting that problem. When that happens, Bennett better get ready for a lot more action on his side of the ball.

One last thing. As for how much we paid to sign Reeves, if he turns into a shutdown CB, will we have paid too much or gotten a real sweet deal?
