Draft Rumors and Tidbits

If two of Henry, Alexander and James get traded before or during the draft, we may see quite the slide and scurry over the top 3 RB's in the draft.

The RB situation across the league is getting very interesting indeed.

From greatbluenorth draft reports today:

# QBs to go 1-2… According to a report in the Miami Herald, Miami has pretty much decided to take Utah QB Alex Smith with the second pick overall at the 2005 draft, if they keep the selection. If is the operative word, however. According to the same report, the Dolphins have had talks with Tampa Bay about swapping the 2nd and 5th picks with the Buccaneers reportedly interested in Smith for themselves. The sticking point to the deal though may be what Tampa Bay has to give up in return. The Dolphins appear to want the Buccaneers second and third round picks, in addition to the 5th selection overall, however, the Buccaneers are concerned about losing their entire first day to get just one player. It had been pretty much the consensus around the league that the Dolphins would take Auburn RB Ronnie Brown with the #2 pick, however, Miami will certainly be in a position to select one of this year’s top backs – either Brown, his Auburn teammate Carnell Williams or Cedric Benson of Texas – with the 5th pick overall. Indeed, there’s a good chance the Dolphins could end up with Brown with the 5th pick overall. Assuming San Francisco takes California Aaron Rodgers with the first pick overall, and Smith goes second, Michigan WR Braylon Edwards is likely to go third overall, either to Cleveland which currently holds the pick, or to a team that trades up to grab him. Then if Chicago opts for a WR like Mike Williams of Southern Cal rather than Brown, the Auburn star would be available at #5. And, of course, if he isn’t Auburn’s Williams or Benson would still be there.

Travis Henry: Bucs are Interested
RotoWire.com Staff - RotoWire.com
Friday, April 15, 2005

Update: Bucs General manager Bruce Allen said he contacted the Bills on Wednesday about the possibility of acquiring Henry, the St. Petersburg Times reports.

Recommendation: The Bills' asking price for Henry is not clear, though the speculation is that a second-round pick would do the trick. If the Bucs can swing this trade, they could turn their draft day focus to receivers Mike Williams or Braylon Edwards, or they could make a move to trade up from the #5 spot to grab a potential franchise QB, either Alex Smith or Aaron Rodgers. Stay tuned.

Is it just me or does every time Miami is mentioned in a trade since Saban came on seem that they are looking for the moon? The guy sounds seriously unreasonable to me, almost like he's trying to prove how "tough" he is.

Do they announce trades upon the first selection of a swap of picks, or is a trade announced after both teams pick at the swapped positions. In other words, if we move up, will we know it once the pick is called for the Texans new draft slot?

I haven't watched many live drafts - but I'm watching this year's!

The easiest way for me to answer your question, 57, is to pose a scenario:

Paul Tagliabue announces that Arizona is on the clock, then Arizona tells Tagliabue that they've traded the 8th overall pick to the Texans for the 73rd and 78th overall picks, then Tagliabue announces the trade and says that Houston is on the clock, we select Derrick Johnson, LB, Texas, and everyone is happy...

So we have the 8th and 11th picks, and only give up our 2 thirds for #8 overall?

Tagliabue steps to the podium.

"Arizona trades the 8th overall pick to the Houston Texans. In exchange the Cardinals receive Houston's 2005 1st round pick, number 13 overall, Dallas's 2005 3rd round pick, number 73 overall, and Houston's 2005 3rd round pick, number 78 overall. Houston is now on the clock." He leaves the podium.

A few minutes later he receives a card and returns to the podium.
"With the 8th overall pick in the draft, the Houston Texans select LB Derrick Johnson of Texas."

Thanks for clarifying Ogre, I was strapped for time typing this up as fast as I could and made a few notable omissions...

Thanks for the information D-Rek, Drift and Ogre! (I liked D-Rek's trade the best).

Wow! I can't believe that we traded for DJ? I'm pumped! I know - soy un perdedor. I'm a loser. :loser

They don't always announce trades well in advance of the picks, though they always mention them before the pick is made. However, the TV crew generally has the trade showing before the NFL gets around to announcing it, so you don't need to worry too much about that.

Eagles | Interested in Bills' Henry? - from www.KFFL.com
Thu, 14 Apr 2005 15:56:50 -0700

Jay Glazer, of FOXSports.com, reports the Philadelphia Eagles have shown interest in Buffalo Bills RB Travis Henry. The Bills have phoned the Eagles on more than one occasion, but Henry's interest in a new contract could kill a potential trade from coming about. While the Bills are looking for a second-round draft choice, they would probably take a third-round or even a fourth-rounder that could move up to a third-rounder based off of incentives.

While Davey's accuracy, footwork and overall game management has been average at best in the preseason, some NFL scouts compare him to Jacksonville's Byron Leftwich. And his arm strength remains off the charts.
The Pats have certainly done their best to accommodate Davey's skills, which include decent mobility and the ability to throw on the run. During the Super Bowl, then-offensive coordinator Charlie Weis revealed the Pats have a special set of six plays that are designed specifically for Davey.
There have been strong rumors this offseason that former defensive coordinator and current Browns head coach Romeo Crennel is interested in trading for Davey and bringing him to Cleveland to compete with Kelly Holcomb and Trent Dilfer for the starting job.

I wonder if this is at all related to the rumor that the Bucs like Smith also. Baiting for a trade???

I heard a rumor that the texans are going to trade their 2nd and 3rd round pick for Philip Buchannon, but no word if its true or anything. Its all speculation...... :heh:

Texans have told Next Level Scouting Best Player Available, or trade down

What does this mean?

I think it means they're targeting 8 guys (big 3 rb/wr, merrimen and johnson), while also banking on Pac Man, Rolle, Smith, and Rodgers all being gone w/ either Ware or Spears going to either Cowboys or Chargers at 11 and 12.

If this doesn't happen, look for them to trade back and take a run blocking tackle, possibly the likes of Jammal Brown or Roddy White.

I'm assuming Brown would play LT here, but wasn't he a RT throughout his college career? I think he's less of a gamble than Barron though...

my thinking is moving Wade to the LT (ala John Tait in Chicago) and let Brown clear some people out on that RT side. He's the best run blocker in the draft. He killed Derrick Johnson when he had to block him on running plays in the OU/Texas battles the last few years

Todd Wade at LT is a very risky proposition IMO, since he's only an average pass blocker...I don't doubt Brown could make an elite RT, but I'm just not sold on Wade on the left side...What do you make out of the Texans O-Line coach allegedly "drooling" over Khalif Barnes, was it just a smokescreen?

Not at all, remember what I said a few days ago about Barron not being #1 OT on their board? It could very possible that it is Barnes. I just feel that Brown is going to be a run blocking machine in this league, but if they go Barnes, he may contend for the LT spot.

I just hope we stay put, and have what I am predicting happening up a few posts ago occur and we get who we want.

"Average" is better than what the Texans have been getting at LT. I can see Wade moving to LT for a season while working a young tackle into the lineup. Barron, Brown, Barnes...all of them have LT potential.

miami traded their #2 for minns 7 and 18. wonder how this will effect the texans and troy williamson. i'm guessing the vikes moved up to get braylon edwards. who else is interested in a wr? tb and sd? is that it?

I've been watching ESPN News and haven't seen anything on the ticker, I also haven't heard anything about it on local radio here (1300AM Austin). Where did you hear that?

If Miami did do that that is a good trade for them. They have multiple needs and I guess the Vikings want to get whatever receiver it is they covet.

Casserly's comments indicate a trade down is more likely. If you look at what we have left - 78 3rd Round - that makes sense. I think we will trade down to get a 2nd or possibly early 3rd round pick. Kipers has NE taking Mankins at 78 and talking that he's their kind of guy. If he's good for NE, I don't know why he wouldn't be good for us. We would need a higher 3rd round choice if we were going to do that. Right now, we have very little left after our 13th. Casserly said that you only have about a 30% chance with 3rd rounders, so if you go by that, we don't have too much to look forward to after 13. I still think we have a lot of needs and it looks like we are not going to fill them through this year's draft. It will be interesting to see how they manage the rest of the draft.

I have heard that Philly wants to move up and Take M. Williams. They feel that they are 1 player from being "the Team"
I have also heard that Minnesota will trade up to make sure Philly or Tampa doesnt get Mike Williams.
Washington might trade up and get Williams or Edwards

So if Miami trades it will be either Minn, Philly, Tampa, or Washington
Personally i think Minnesota has the best to offer
Then i think Cleveland will trade their pick to one of the other Teams maybe Washington or Philly to get B. Edwards

What's in a name?
Utah's Alex Smith will become the 251st Smith selected in the draft. Smith is the most popular surname in the draft, followed by Williams (242), Johnson (229), Jones (198) and Brown (182).
The Cleveland Browns have selected 11 players with the surname "Brown." Not to be outdone, the Buffalo Bills have selected eight players with the first name "Bill" or "Billy."

Thomas Davis rated higher than DJ at linebacker?

Saints | Linebacker on Draft Wish List - from www.KFFL.com
Thu, 21 Apr 2005 13:19:46 -0700

Jeff Duncan, of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, reports there have been strong indications the New Orleans Saints are targeting a linebacker with their No. 16 overall pick in the first round of the NFL Draft. The top rated linebacker prospect on the club's draft board is Georgia S/LB Thomas Davis, who is projected as a weak-side linebacker.

Someone mentioned that Nick Saban is asking for to much but that is what he had at LSU. He asked and we gave him everything he wanted! I do wish him all the best but SABANVILLE was his vision and he left it. He had everything a coach could want at LSU. Great Pay, Great Fan support, Great Stadium(and only getting better), Great practice facilities and support buildings and just a great place to live. ... I know Baton Rouge is small time but it is a nice college town that has New Orleans 1 hour away and Houston just 4 hours away. If you are wondering why he is asking for so much that is why....he had it all at THE LOUISIANA STATE UNIVERSITY. Home of the Nation's best fans at he best stadium in all...and I mean ALL of FOOTBALL!!!

If you think you can name a better place to play try but the complete package is only at LSU!

Fans, Stadium, Tailgating!!!

Geaux Texans and TIGERS!!!

What does this have to do with rumors?

Anyone heard the rumor that the Seahawks want to send us Alexander for our 13th pick? Someone just told me they heard it on 610...

That better not happen, concerning the fact that they said a 2nd would do it!! Send a 3rd,4th,5th and i'd be happy. But Keep the 13th. Or make them send their 1rst round back in exchange.

Someone told me there was an "insider" on 610 earlier that said the Seahawks wanted to trade Alexander for our 13th pick and also the guy that told me said there was a snippet about it somewhere on foxsports.com, but I can't find it anywhere...

I've been listenting to 610 most of the day, and I haven't heard it, but it's possible that I missed it...

This is worse than election time. This is more important :)

Any other word on the Alexander trade rumors? I've been listening to Austin sports radio but they haven't mentioned anything about it.
