Texans sign seventh-round draft pick

HOUSTON (AP) -- Seventh-round draft pick Sloan Thomas signed Monday with the Houston Texans.

The 6-foot-1, 203-pound wide receiver finished his college career at Texas with 88 receptions for 1,362 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Derrick Armstrong is the 4th WR this coming year, the coaches have really been impressed with him. Thomas will fight for the #4 next year probably.

I can't wait to see what happens with Sloan. This will be one of the most fun parts of the preseason games.

I think Sloan Thomas will be fighting for the #3 WR spot in 2005.

The coaches have also been really impressed with Thomas. Armstrong has the advantage of playing for a year in the Texans system, and that should help him in competing against Thomas for the #4 spot this year. However, Thomas probably has the advantage in speed and overall physical talent, plus he is pretty intelligent. If Bradford doesn't return in 2005, I see Thomas as a strong possibility for the #3 WR spot as a downfield threat. Remember that Thomas had the same 40 time as Roy Williams.

Here is something back from the 2004 pre-draft days from the insiders- A competitive prospect who plays with alot of energy. Gotta like that
Thomas was a victim of a Texas team loaded with quality receivers. He has the frame and atheltic skills to be a solid second receiver for an NFL team and could turn into a steal during the middle rounds of Aprils draft.

Just some thoughts of my own if he is good enough to play back-up to Roy Williams he's probably a good fit to play behind Andre Johnson in the #2 slot.

Sloan was also a victim of Greg Davis's play calling, and later of the option-style play that Vince Young's presence necessitated.

Roy Williams had no year last year because of all that as well. It was disheartening to watch.

I'm really interested to see how Sloan turns out outside of the Brown/Davis overconservative-underachievement mentality, just like I am to see how Simms turns out.

I thought Roy Williams did not do as well last year, because Simms was not there. You never know. I geuss Harrington is going to be happy.

Kevin Jones is going to love Roy. Roy is the most unselfish player I have seen these days. He truly loves winning more than anything and if he has to block down field to do it, he won't just do it but he will lay people out with a passion.

Roy Williams wasn't going to make a lot of big plays running five-yard out patterns. It was weird.

Sloan Thomas is such a steal IMO for the 7th Rd. Thomas was just a victim of the offense at Texas, so I don't think we got a full report card on him. I'm as huge a Horns fan as they come, but a lot of talent is wasted by that Texas coaching staff...IMO. But anyhow, I do think he's shown flashes of being one of those ultimate compliment WR's. Think John Taylor, Keenan McCardell, etc. I'm not saying he's as good as those guys, but he's use to not being the #1 WR on the team has come up big at critical times. I think a #3 WR is a realistic goal for him at this point, but then again I'm still waiting for Gaffney to prove he deserves a #2 role.

It would be nice to know what the grades for all of the Texans picks were. I saw somewhere that Duff had a 5th round grade on the Texans board.

Some say that Earl was a first day pick until he got hurt but I've not read anywhere if he was a late first round middle second or a bottom third or anywhere in between. idonno:

Don't be surprised if Sloan Thomas ends up being a solid receiver for the Texans in the future. He has been playing in the shadow of some real good receivers, BJ Johnson and Roy Williams. Sometimes guys like him end up having better NFL careers than college careers (not that he didn't have a good college career).

One quick note on the Sloan signing...this might be the writing on the wall for JJ Moses. We all seem to be tracking that AJ, Bradford and Gaff are top rungs; Armstrong is highly thought of and will make the squad, Thomas got a pretty good contract for his draft position...so that's 5 WRs already. That is definetly squeezing JJ out...particularly since there so many guys in camp that have return skills.

Sloan got about 40K for a signing bonus and that's all the Texans would have to eat if he didn't make the roster. Most of the 7th round picks get that type of bonus and most of the 7th round picks don't make rosters. Thomas is not a lock for this roster by any means just because of his contract.

There are a lot of guys in camp to compete for the return job. But Thomas isn't one of those guys. His competition isn't among WRs as much as special teams coverage specialists like Jason Bell, Darrick Vaughn, & Jason Simmons. That's how Sloan has to make this roster, but he is athletic enough to do that.

According to Alan Burge's Texans' salary cap, Sloan Thomas' cap number for 2004 is $243,333, of which I believe only $13,333 will be a guaranteed hit on the cap this year (the pro-rated signing bonus) if he is released. I believe he got a $40,000 signing bonus as a seventh round pick and one Texan undrafted free agent got $25,000.

I don't believe Thomas' contract confirms "that's 5 WRs already," although I agree that Texans would prefer a better WR prospect than Moses.

Sloan could be a big plus for the Texans.

time to revive an old thread...

anyone know how sloan has been doing? i didnt even know he was playing in the NFL untill i saw this. I used to play ball with him in 5th grade (i think), he was fast back then.

i have a pic of the team from 1991. if anyone wants to hoast it let meknow

MAN...you got my hopes up. I was hoping we brought him back. I recall reading where he was (at one time) the fastest guy on our team. Obviously that doesn't mean a whole lot...but still.

Doing a search, I see he became a Titan (go figure).

Yes he is a Titian and he been reunited with VY and he loves being him and being there. He is doing well up there and watch for him this year.

Titans also have an All-Big 12 TE from UT on their roster (2nd yr) in Bo Scaiffe (sp), who did pretty good last year--heck, even the Pats have UT players but not the Texans.
