IMHO, the offense should not have played as conservatively as they did in the second half and someone needs to draw up a play to send some speed down the field and let Matt take a shot. We could have really laid some offensive hurt on the Lions, and we let up on them it seemed to me.

This is definitely the best offense we ever had. It's nice to be able to score 20+ points a game. For the last 4 games we have averaged almost 28 points/gm. Not bad.

I'm not sure Johnson or Daniels were thrown to the second halt, If so maybe once or twice that's about it.

If you've noticed, Schaub has not shown much of a strong arm. In the last few games, he has looked past deeper wide open
receivers in lieu of those in very short routes. I also noticed that especially this game, you never saw 2 receivers going deep sideline. (Remember, we were supposedly looking for a good #2 receiver to compliment AJ on deep routes [which we found]; we were not looking for another #2 receiver to play the #3 slot) . Last week, he floated his share of longer passing attempts, with the ball turning over on itself, fortunately not falling into the defenders' hands. The dink and dunk can give you big numbers {as we all know from our 1 st QB}, but you need at least the occasional reliable long throw to consistently win games. I think the coaches have come to accept Schaub's weakness (which was glaringly noted in his college career) and are trying to play call around it as best they can.

I think alot of it has to do with protection, yeah they're improving but there's still consistent pressure on Matt. I saw one play where they got pressure on Matt with a 3 man rush, that unacceptable against this Lions D. If Schaub was that inept at the deep pass that the coaches would have to play call around it, I just don't think he would be a starting QB in the league,of course there are exceptions though( Chad Pennington), but I just think it has to do more with protection issues.JMO

Here's some stats for the last four games (Jax through Detroit):
1. We've scored at least 27 points in each game.
2. We've had 37 offensive possessions in the four games (not counting end-of-half possessions where we kneeled on the ball). Of those 37, almost half--18--saw us either score or get inside the other teams' 20. The breakdown: 9 touchdowns, 7 FGs, and two redzone turnovers (Schaub's yesterday and AJ's fumble last week). Of the other 19 possessions, an additional 7 ended on the other team's side of the 50.
3. Of those 37 possessions, only 7 resulted in a three-and-out, and two of those were Sage's two fumbles in the Indy meltdown.
4. Our worst game in terms of yardage was Jacksonville, where we were "held" to 376 yards. We're averaging about 413 yards/game. And, as we all know too well, there has not been one second of garbage time in those four games, so none of these yards could be called stat-padding. The Patriots had one of the most prolific offenses in history last year, and their average was 411 ypg.
5. Of all the points we've scored the last four weeks, not a single one came following an opponents' turnover. We only forced two in that span, and one of those (Wilson's interception against Miami) we fumbled the return away. The other was Diles' interception of Manning just a few seconds before halftime. So, other than JJ's punt return against the Fish, our offense has had to do it all themselves.
We're getting really stinking good on offense, folks. We still need to cut down on the turnovers, but those are mostly correctible mistakes--three QB fumbles when they were trying to do too much and Schaub's pre-snap error on the second Fish pick, for example. Experience alone should cut down on those errors as time goes on. In evaluating a young team, the key question is whether the potential is there despite the errors. I think we can agree that we're definitely showing potential on that side of the ball right now.
I want this to be a happy Monday, so I won't go into the defense . . .

I'm not willing to put it on the OL in most cases. Schaub has a way of putting it on himself.
That being said, it was evident that at times we showed a "cream puff" OL..............i.e., soft in the center. There were many a play where Myers was pushed back so far that his butt was in the RB's or Qb's face. On occasion Brisiel appeared to be the problem. However, it played to the rule of thumb that the guard can be made to look pretty bad by weak center play.
It seems that our center may be too small and/or weak to deal with large DL.
I don't know.

Speaking about Turk, what is everyone's opinion on that penalty when he whacked in the chest with a leg, 5 yarder or 15? I have to be honest, I don't think there should ever be a 15 yard personal foul penatly after a defense has earned a punt just because some moron runs into a kicker or said kicker does his best acting job. But the rules are the rules and after watching that replay a few times I'm surprised it wasn't called a 15 yarder.

Here are some more stats about our offense (more pertinently, point totals) and how much support they get from the rest of the team:
The Texans have scored 27 or more points 17 times. Nine of those 17 have come in the last 22 games (the beginning of last season). In the 80 games before Schaub/Rosenfels was our QB combo, we scored 27 or more 8 times.
It gets even more interesting when you factor in how much of the scoring could be attributed to some assistance from defense/special teams. If you look at the 17 games where we scored at least 27, a strong majority came with significant aid from the defense/ST. I used the 50 yard line (arbitrarily, I admit) to differentiate between "unassisted drives" and "assisted drives".
So if you look at the 17 games we scored at least 27 and threw out the "assisted scores" where the score either came on, or was set up by, a long return, turnover or punt from deep in the opponents end, you get these results:
In 12 of those 17 games where we scored at least 27, the offense tallied no more than 21 points on "unassisted drives". That means in 12 of those 17 games, the offense needed real help to get to 27.
Of the 5 games where the offense scored at least 27 on unassisted drives, 3 have come in the last 4 weeks (only Miami with a punt return TD and a FG set up by a kickoff return to the Fish 42 was not a pure long-drive game). The other two were Sage's big comeback against Tennessee and the Denver game last year. In other words, the first time a Texans offense ever scored 27 purely on long drives was in the 7th game of last season.
The previous paragraph astounds me for two reasons:
1. That, in the first 86 games of its existence, the Texans' offense never scored above 21 points in a game without significant help from either its defense or special teams. In the last 16 games, they've done it 5 times.
2. I have no idea what percentage of 27+ point outputs in the league are the result of long drives only (or, stated better, where long drives account for at least 27 points out of a team's output). My guess is that around 60% of all such tallies around the league require significant help from D/ST. But, in the last four games, we've gotten almost nothing (save 10 points in the Miami game) and got to 27 anyway. Again, our offense is humming.
Adding more:

Actually, I'd say our offense has been the opposite of lucky this year. They've gotten almost no help from the defense or special teams in getting field position. Almost every point scored by the team this year has been the result of the offense taking the ball the length of the field. By my count, the other units have assisted on a grand total of 16 of our 140 points (a FG in each of the first two games and 10 points against Miami).
By contrast, I think the Bears got around 30 assisted points in their last game alone. My guess is that our 124 unassisted points leads the league or is in the top 5.
