The Texans lost on Sunday because they have no confidence. No confidence in a running game. No confidence in their defense.
27-10 with under 5:00 minutes left? Run the damn ball!
Don't turn the ball over.
Don't give Peyton Manning the short field.
Punt if you have to and let your defense stop them with 80 or more yards to go.

They were also moving the ball successfully with the play action boot, and they'd just run the ball on first and second down for a whopping two yards.

Not sure what you mean when you say 'elite' college programs. I'd hardly call Alabama an elite program when Demeco was on the team. Or maybe is it just large BCS schools that win a lot (not necesarily championship calibre though). There's plenty of other players that played for large/good programs such as Ahman Green from the championship year at Nebraska (Kris Brown too?), Fram Okam on the Texas Nat'l Champ squad, Andre Davis played in the Nat'l Championship while at Virginia Tech, Louisville and West Virginia were highly ranked while Amobi and Slaton were in school. I'm sure there are others. And if I remember correctly, Miami was pretty dissapointing with Larry Coker (from 2003 season on)
With that said, I will agree we need to get more 'winners' in here. I have nothing against small school players, but as a basis think we should be drafting guys from great programs. We need to go where we have found success before too. Demeco, he is and was productive, but didn't necessarily have the measurables of a top 10 pick. Go after the players that you know are football players, those guys that are going to get the job done as best they can. Fred Bennett/Dunta Robinson... let's look at some more South carolina CB's or DB's, if these guys play well on our defense continue scouting there. Virginia Tech/Miami offensive linemen.
I'd really like us to focus on getting solid football players from SEC, Big XII, and ACC football programs. And let's get some guys that have the winning mentality. If we have enough guys that come from a winning background, they're going to stand up together and say, "hey guys... do you think we can try and win around here? Winning is fun, and this isn't really that much fun"

I get it, it's hard to second guess.
But, I would like to see a dominant running game that can pound the ball and move the chains to run out the clock. Seems like the best way to protect the lead and the ball.

That bootleg play was one they were perfecting all week they said. It definitely worked too. Kinda hard to predict the helicopter move for a TD the other way. He saw huge daylight, got ultra competitive and went for it. Bad decision.

So, you're going to blame all the other players because Sage cares more about getting that starting position than the team and made some boneheaded decisions on the field? You think it's Mario's fault that Sage pulled that crap? How 'bout Demeco, or Slaton? Yesterday was not a team of players problem--it was one big dufus....and maybe the HC for trusting him.

Am I the only one who doesn't fully understand the initial post? Eh, I'm having another f-ed up day so who knows.
The way I read it is: We can't win close games because we have 3 talented players from elite schools who don't know how to win??

Those are very good points. To that, I would add this: during DeMeco's last three years at Alabama, the Tide posted a 20-17 record. That's not exactly a "winning" program, but (needless to say) we're all thrilled he's on our team.
But there is one additional difficulty to getting winners: throughout the franchise's brief history, the draft has been the only hope we have of getting them. The free agents who care more about winning than salary (in other words, the "winners") won't come here until we are winning.

I guess the way things are going - even if we had ran up the middle we propbaly wouldn't have gotten the first down. Then we would have brought out the punt team and the way Pittman has been snapping lately it would have become another Turk in the endzone play and we would have lost anyway. Things just are not going our way!

That seems like a stretch to me. The entire team - including Sage - played one of their best games in franchise history up to the point of his turnovers. They were down 10 and scored 27 unanswered points against a team that always dominates us, which in my mind does not reveal a team that lacks confidence.
Sage was trying to be a playmaker at a point in the game that was unwarranted. He should have played smart football and slid while protecting the ball. Keep the clock going and take Indy's last timeout. That is basic stuff, man.
