Boy, I'd hate to see this place if we lost a playoff game

GP

Go Texans!
If this is considered to be "the end of the world," then what would happen if this had been a playoff game?

We've stunk since our inception, so things are magnified because we don't have any good memories or winning seasons to fall back upon. All this "woe is me" bullhonkey is uncalled for.

Winning and losing is cyclical.

Look at how much the Bengals endured, then for about two seasons they were red-hot and looked like they were on the verge of winning it all.

Throw the Seahawks in there, too. They were awful for years, heck for decades, and then they had two or three Super Bowl caliber seasons. Where are those teams now? Sucking. Again.

Tampa Bay Bucs? Same thing.

It's like those two or three seasons never happened.

When you have a league with 32 teams, and only about four teams are actually "really really good" per year, then you have to see that the odds are low that your team is going to do well.

I see a lot of griping and "poor, pitiful me" attitudes on the board today.

We lost. We'll lose again. We'll lose even more meaningful games than this one.

Tony Romo bobbled a snap and laid on the turf like a little girl. And Cowboys fans were upset, devastated. But Romo came back strong.

Right now would be a great chance for someone like Andre Johnson to come out next Sunday and just dominate a game, acting like a One Man Gang and just willing our team to victory. Steve Slaton could also be that sort of catalyst.

All it takes is one person.

PLAYOFFS!!!

Sorry, I couldn't resist. :heh:

Yeah, I think it would be pretty bad.

I would love to be in the position to lose a playoff game. Sad but true, very frustrating.

This team is the only team in the NFL that has never had a winning streak. Back to back games isn't a streak and winning two games one year and one game the next year isn't a friggin' winning streak either. After 7 years this gets old....I'd love to be crapped out over losing a playoff game....but those are for winning organizations.

Well getting to the layoffs means you are playing meaningful football and not losing and yes I as of right now I would take a playoff loss then not having a winning season.

Losing a playoff game would at least mean we had a good team that year which is something this franchise has not had, nor really come close to having, since it's inception.

The Colts loss isn't just devastating because we that one game. It's because all this franchise knows is losing from the day we started. It's a culmination of all that losing that we've had to endure that has put us fans over the top. It seems that this pathetic loss symbolizes what the franchise has become. A team and organization of losers.

I love how even the Football Night guys are even saying that the reason the Dolphins are doing well is because of Bills tough *** attitude he brought

At the same time there are teams like the Cowboys who suck for a few seasons before becoming good for another decade...

Yeah it is a cycle, but it's not a coincidence that some franchises collect trophies while others are always waiting for that one moment...that one "Every dog has it's day" moment.

Anyone who say how the Cowboys scored their last TD to put the game away tonight knows that some franchises just find ways to win and some just find ways to lose, even if it seems like dumb luck. The Cowboys have a history of finding a way. The Texans don't.

No way that lucky deflected TD for Dallas happens for the Texans when they need it to put a game away.

Yeah, we have a lot more bad stuff ahead of us than this, so I guess we should start getting over it.

Such as - next year, Houston won't have any more blackout protection. That will be a problem unless we turn this season around.

And man, I'm sorry - but I was really disappointed with the fan turnout for the Colts. The place was half empty for a division rival in our season home opener. That just plain sucks... and if it was half-empty for the Colts, what's it going to be for Miami and especially Detroit?

It's going to get worse before it gets better, I'm afraid.

Winning and losing is cyclical.

So when does the win cycle begin? I haven't seen any cycles going on here, just outright losing for now 6 straight seasons. To make matters worse we have seen other teams following that cycle of winning and losing you are speaking of during those 6 years.

The Cowboys were arguable worse than the Texans in 2002, they have gone through a couple of cycles since then and now are winning again. I am sure you can name several other teams that were worse than the Texans since 2002 and have turned things around since. I am a fan of the Giants and can throw them into that category. They were pathetic in 2003 (4-12) and 2004 (6-10), both seasons being worse than the Texans. Now they are reigning Super Bowl Champs.

Everyone loves to compare this team to the 70's expansion Bucs however they tend to forget that Bucs team was only pathetic for it's first 2 seasons of existence. They went to the NFC Championship game in just their 3rd season of existence.

If there has been a worse expansion team since the merger during their first 6 years of existence I would be curious who that was.

I forgot which thread but someone posted the first 100 games for every team. The Texans were around the Bucs and Cleveland Browns in wins, and Dallas had several more wins and a few ties as well. We were way ahead of the Saints though. IIRC we had 32 wins and they had 26 or so.

Yeah exactly.

It's like how they say "You have to lose before you can win." Well...we've done our losing.

I don't see much of a cycle. Some teams suck for a few years before becoming contenders again...we suck for a few years...only to suck for a few more years...

Saints, yes I forgot about them. The Saints are probably the worst expansion team in history. Oh boy, if the Texans have a similar fate as them I really feel for the good folks of Houston. It took them 20 years to have their first winning season. Only 14 seasons to go Texans fans!

It does look like the Texans will be blacked out in SA and Austin come the end of the season since they cant win ****

Both of those guys just did exactly what you are talking about. There's 220 yards and 3 TDs between the 2 of them today. Things were going well too, until.....nevermind

At this point I think a playoff loss would be a welcome reprieve from what we have been seeing since the inception of this franchise. It would mean the Texans had actually made progress.

Bucs and Browns both went to the playoffs by year 4, so their fans tasted some success. Dallas and the Saints were expansion teams back before true free agency so it was a different era.

The Browns joined the NFL in 1950. They won the NFL championship in their first year in the league.
From 1950 thru 1955, The Browns appeared in 6 straight NFL championship games, winning the league championship three times.
From 1950-1959, the browns win-lose record is 88 wins, 30 loss,2 ties.

If you guys are getting this distressed about a regular season game, especially when we were already 0-3 and with the hurricane situation, then it POSSIBLY could be a sign that we are a little immature as a fanbase.

This is nothing new. I remember back when the Rockets were choking in the playoffs. It was a national joke: Choke City. And when we were on the cusp of our first championship, you could sense the tension among the fans....here we go again.

Red Sox went without a title for a long, long time. Heck, there were even some Sox fans who were literally UNhappy because the team's lovable losers identity was lost. A complete turnaround, in terms of team-fan identity.

I'd love for us to lose a playoff game, too. But what if we lost it in a goofy way? One little bobble, or a crazy play that happened out of nowhere?

I'm not thrilled that we lost. It hurt, bad. I'm not sure that Bob McNair will ever open up the wallet (like Jerry Jones) and pay outrageous money for top tier coaches, assistants, etc. So...there's not much control that the t-e-a-m has over these sorts of things. We have, on the field, in it's totality, what the owner has allowed us to have. How's THAT for reality?

Is Bob McNair really a "football guy?" Is he sitting on the edge of his seat during a game, biting his fingernails, wringing his hands on a crucial play before the snap? Is he supplying his HC with THE best assistants that money can buy? Richard Smith is proff that he's not. There's no way Kubiak thought Richard Smith was the bizness back when we hired him. I mean, seriously...

We got football back in Houston...but what's the rest of the story?

Prolly gonna' need a big supply of tums for awhile, fellas.

Referring to the "new" Cleveland Browns after Baltimore left.

Gotta' love it....fans want to vent within 24 hours of a losing debacle, one where our team once again grabs defeat from the jaws of victory...and they get called out because other teams have lost in the past, too.

That is called putting sprinkles on a dog turd and selling it as a brownie.

I could honestly give a rat's ass about the history of other teams. I am not, and have never been, a fan of any of those teams. I am a Houston Texans fanatic, and I'm sorry if a little bitter ranting doesn't make fairies and rainbows on Monday morning.

It sucks to be 0-4, and I'm not going to act like we should turn that frown upside down as a disappointed fan of a losing franchise. I'll get over it, I always do. Just not right now.

Immature fan base my ass! If you expect people to come in here all chummy after a loss like that when you're team is 0-4 then I don't know what you were expecting. I'm a fan that wants to win and expects my team owner to make adjustments as well as the coaching staff and general managers when things aren't going right. Well things aren't going right at all right now.

Texans fans have supported the hell out of this organization for years though loser seasons and one mediocre season that I personally wasn't excited about. The players, coaches and other staff members are all getting paid top dollars to produce and when they aren't they will be criticized while they're still getting their pay check to produce rather than to just show up. I'm glad that fans are upset and uneasy. At least it shows that people care and demand for success instead of being happy just to watch a team on Sunday. You play to win the game, not hang around. Real fans want to win.

Being a Texan fan and a former Oiler, fan who lives in San Antonio following the Spurs I have seen my fair share of meltdowns. Heart breaking ones . I mean gut wrenching.... feel sick for a week losses, but this one has got to be the hardest hit. I may have to take some time to think about where this one ranks.

1. Derrick Fischer's shot with .04 left
2. Oilers loose to Bills in playoffs after having a 35-3 lead ( I still retch inwardly)
3. Houston Oilers looses to Denver in playoffs
4 Houston Oilers loose to KC in playoffs at home
5.Manu fouls Dirk and allows Mavs to go to OT where they win.
6. Texans loose 21 point lead to Ram's 3 string QB.
7. Texans loose 17 point lead to Colts

There is more but... i must stop... cant take too much of my painful memories.

Getting THIS wound up about it does what?

Does nothing but set you up for MORE heartache.

You're proving my point.

Had we ever BEEN a winning team, this meltdown by the fanbase would be understandable. Clearly there are people here who had this team ranked a little too highly. Again.

Every year, it's the same thing on this board: "So-and-so has us ranked 24th in the NFL. That's horsecrap!" or "Did you see how ESPN has been ragging us in the preseason analysis?"

Boo friggity hoo.

We have z-e-r-o control over the destiny of this team. None. Getting irritated and venting on a message board is not going to change things. Heck, not even bad fan support at the games themselves is going to change anything. Bob McNair is doing just fine (financially) and he could care less about "The Great Fans" of the Houston Texans when he's ranked near the top of the Most Profitable Franchises list. He does enough to keep this team looking good enough to keep things rolling.

And the band plays on...

What Texans fans are left with, at the end of each season, is the strange and possibly miraculous stroke of luck that somehow things are going to come together in some way. There has been a lot of posturing here, and it's been by an owner that thinks he can make a football team out of a bunch of boy scout-minded coaches.

I don't have "hope" anymore. I just sit and watch, get fed the bull that I've been fed since Year 1, and then mayyyyyyyyyybe it'll all work out one day and the sun will shine on our you-know-what's.

You and I being "upset" does not one bit of good. Go ahead and vent, that's fine, but understand that Bob McNair isn't coming here to see how we feel today. Decisions won't be made based on how pee'od we are.

So, in that sense, "Yes" a lot of people here are thinking that we were better than we are. And I just fail to see why that's anybody else's fault but ours. I'm preaching to myself, too, OK? I did have hope, but now I see that we don't need to get excited about anything until the "Loser Mentality" has gone for good. Because it's here, and it ain't going away anytime soon.

We look a lot less stupid than Cubs fans that thought they were going to win it all this year. Be in THAT boat for a few decades or 7, and tell me how awful things are here as a Texans fan.

My identity, in life, is NOT wrapped up in whether a bunch of millionaires win or lose on Sunday. They win EVERY Sunday, IMO.

Even losing like we did, it was freaking entertaining.

Not a one of you has won every single thing you've set your heart upon. Expecting it to happen, by remote-control (as in "You're not in control of the games, but you're invested in it as if you are") nonetheless, is understandable but yet also a little disheartening to me.

I wasn't happy. I wasn't throwing a party after the game. But I did do one tiny thing: Put it in proper perspective.

If it takes some of you longer than others, then that's cool.

But acting like our own manhood is based on how our team does? That's what it's feeling like on here: Like you guys personally lost yesterday. You ache for the team? Don't. They know the price, just like we do.

Cubs fans know. We laugh at 'em, and they know it. Just like we know people laugh at us. But we're all here and present. We ain't going anywhere. We're Texans Tough. Period.

I don't want any of us here on this board even remotely thinking about quitting. So if you're reading this, and you're thinking that now's a good time to get out...DON'T. Stay. Roll with the punches, find a way to put it into proper perspective. You were here for a reason. This is YOUR team, win or lose. This is YOUR team yesterday, today, and next Sunday when those guys take the field. Heck, I hope the stands are packed out after what happened yesterday. Maybe it won't be, it prolly won't be, but that'd be cool if the gameday support for the Texans ROSE after this loss. Could you imagine the looks on the faces of our team, to see the most rabid stadium they've ever seen?

Now THAT would be truly special.

My apologies if I am preaching here.

I remember Oilers-Bills 35-3, and I was about 14 when it happened.

I took a baseball bat outside in 10-degree, 35 mph wind, weather that afternoon. I beat the tree down by our horse pens. Beat it until the bat was shredded and I had cried so hard that I was shivering from near-hypothermia.

Begged my parents to let me stay home from school so I wouldn't face my friends who would rag on me all week.

I sorta' did an inventory on my outlook for professional sports at that moment.

Not trying to do a real fan vs. not a real fan "rant' here, but sorry if it came off that way. Just want to see people be able to vent and then put it behind them. But I guess that's everyone's own business. So, sorry.

Alright well I agree with this post 100% GP. You obviously didn't read any of my posts at the beginning of the season. I don't know how many posters attacked me when I told them Kubiak wasn't a great coach and that Smith was only a DECENT GM. I might not have expected much, but that is only because I haven't had confidence in Kubiak since the end of season one. His philosophy and strategies have been bad for this team since the start in my opinion and I've been annoyed with this constant yearning to be like the Broncos as well.

However, I don't think fans like us can just sit around and say "I'm not surprised and I expected this". We've got to send the message somehow. I do think that Texans employees and PR people for the team read sites like this and many others and the more they hear and find that fans find this sort of thing unacceptable the more they have to consider finding better people to hire tha can turn this franchise into a winning culture.

You were right earlier when you said that Mcnair makes his decisions and lets them play out. He isn't a knee jerk reaction guy at all and that can be really good or ALSO really bad and thus far that mentality has been really bad because he has not hired the right people and our results prove that. So at some point, if he hires the right guy and right GM then things can change, but how long will it take for him to decide that this team needs another change? How long of a leash is he going to give Kubiak and others? My guess is a pretty long one until he and the rest of the Texans organization hears enough complaints from fans where he feels he NEEDS to hire new people to turn this franchise around. God, I don't want to see another season of the Kubiak regime. All fans can do is try to make their voices heard.

See, that's the deal that I think a Texans fan has to come to grips with: Bob McNair is not going to pull an Al Davis. Never.

And he isn't cool with the Jerry Jones Daniel Snyder approach of throwing BIG money up against the locker room wall and seeing if it sticks or not.

There's a saying, when sizing up your opponent: Watch what he does the first three times...that's what he will tend to do when the crunch is on.

If McNair sticks with Kubiak for Year 4 (2009) , then he has a history of giving regimes a 4-year window no matter what. The only problem is that Kubiak, IIRC, will be in his last year of his contract in 2009. So, there's a bit of a conundrum here (that's PROBLEM, for JoeTexan. j/k): Does he go into year 4 as a "gotta' do great to get an extension," or does Rick Smith and Bob McNair man-up and say "Gary, just like with a player on the team, you're in a contract year here. We know you can do it. Let's talk after 2009."

Isn't it funny how things go so well for teams when their QB is an automatic on Sunday? Find yourself a winning QB, and the coaching can look fantastic most of the time. Football really is a lot like golf: Every little thing has to be in rhythm and in-sync for the game to look effortless.

We look effortless right now, just in the wrong way.

But getting a winning and proven head coach, and I don't mean a guy who had one great year out of nowehere, is the key IMO. How that plays out is so completely up in the air with Bob McNair. Heck, what if the next guy turns out to be worse than Kubiak? This place will be on fire like Nero stopped by.

The problem is Jerry really doesn't do this and is one of the smartest owners out there with his cap money and spending. He and McNair are buds. He should follow SOME of Jerry's moves. Now Snyder is a different story.

I agree Wade isnt a top coach Jerry just goes after good talent and doesnt have a problem spending the money. I still believe that the Cowboys are playing with Parcells talent and that is why the team is stacked

Duh..........have you ever heard of the name...IKE???? Alot of fans are still trying to just get their houses & yards back together. As a matter of fact I know of folks who only "heard" about this fiasco game game 2nd hand because they were too busy with clean up to even turn on a TV. I know I still have work to do on my home & yard, ......still have one big tree to cut up & haul from the back yard to the front to hauled away.

So banging on the fans right now is not the way to go.

Puts things in perspective huh? I hope all gets better for you and your neighbors

If you are griping about people getting ticked off about our team's never winning and believe it is not fair, you have been drinking too much of your Kool-Aid. What could this possibly have to do with a playoff game? If we ever got to the playoffs, the stadium would be rocking like it was yesterday. Have you heard anybody whining about not winning the Super Bowl? This just in, we are losers since our inception.

Bump to say "Boy, I'd really hate to see this place if we actually won a playoff game we should've lost.

Texecutioner must be a delight to hang with while watching the Texans play.

Good Gawd awwmightee, he bitches after the Texans win a game they should've won, a game in which they played probably the best football I've ever seen this team play--against a team that's owned them throughout the history of the franchise--and when they get a dramatic, I-don't-believe-what-I-just-saw, comeback victory to rescue the season and perhaps the franchise itself from the lowest low imaginable, he continues to ***** and moan.

With friends like this....
