JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (March 30, 2005) -- The Jacksonville Jaguars signed veteran free agent defensive end Marcellus Wiley to a one-year contract as the team added another free agent end to their defensive front.

"If everything works out though, (the deal) could be for much longer by the end of the year," Wiley's agent Brad Blank said.

The 6-foot-4, 278-pound Wiley joins fellow free agent pickup Reggie Hayward as the likely starters at defensive end next season. The line is already anchored by Pro Bowl tackles Marcus Stroud and John Henderson.

Injuries last year led to converted linebacker Greg Favors being the Jaguars' top pass rusher.

Last year, Wiley started 15 games and recorded 37 tackles with three sacks and 11 quarterback pressures. A Pro Bowler with San Diego in 2001, Wiley has 387 tackles and 44 sacks in eight seasons with Buffalo, San Diego and Dallas.

"He's excited," Blank said. "I was at the Super Bowl with him and -- I'm not making this up -- we were walking along the Riverwalk and he said, 'Boy would I like to play here. I could live on my boat.' Now two months later, look at where we are."

The 30-year-old Wiley joins the Jags after one disappointing season in Dallas.

Wiley signed a four-year deal with the Cowboys last March, but he had no sacks through the first 10 games and the team began to bench him in passing situations. Wiley said the team wasn't using him as promised.

He was released on Feb. 22, but still counts for $3,375,000 toward the Cowboys salary cap this season.

Oh great!! Now we have to face "Dat Dude" twice a year!! True, he's not the pass rusher he once was, but he can still cause mad problems. Your thoughts...
 
Im not even sure Wiley is going to be the starter in Jacksonville. Paul Spicer is coming back from injury and he played really well last year until the chopblock broncos cut block him and took him out for the season. He will be fighting for playing time in Jax.
 
I wouldn't be too concerned with Wiley. He's struggled the past couple of season, and as Jags98 mentioned he'll have to compete to get the starting spot. I'd be more concerened with Hayward than Wiley. Hayward performed very well with the Broncos, and with DTs like Stroud and Henderson he might perform even better. Guess we'll find out next season.
 
My grandmother could play as well as Wiley did last year; I ain't scared of him, atleast not in a football sense. He's either camp fodder of a pure back-up player, the odds of Wiley doing anything this year above being amde a fool be some OTs is nill.
 
I'm confused as to what caused his massive dropoff in production last year.

I had said for a while that he was overrated, but I never expected him to fall off the map like that.

Personally if I were them I'd have sent him packing too. He was a complete bust.
 
Wiley is a nobody now...He'll probably make as much of an impact as Hugh Douglas did there...
 
Wiley didnt do squat for Dallas last season. We paid him like a Pro Bowler and he got like what, one sack?

He never was able to rush the QB what so ever, worst DE I've ever seen. And to think, dallas got rid of Ekuban for that piece of garbage is amazing.

Then at the end of the season he blames his fellow D-line players for his problems. What a jerk..
 
wiley was a good pass rusher but it seems that age has taken it's toll on him...in regards to the jags d-line i'll be willing to pay your salaries for the two games against the texans if ya'll sit out those games...i'll even throw in a bonus if the texans win...hahaha...anything to keep carr's legs from running all day those games
 
This guy has never recovered from that injury he got a few years ago. Right now all I see him doing is taking up one blocker.
 
Even if Wiley could manage to win a starting spot, he wouldn't be our pass rusher compared to someone to stop the run. We have Reggie Hayward to do our pass rushing, and THAT should be more intimidating than Wiley considering we have the best DT tandem in the NFL in Henderson and Stroud next to Hayward.
 
Wiley is capable of bein a solid end for them. At Dallas, he was frustrated, Parcells wanted him more of a run-stopping end. He came to Dallas thinking he would be a push rusher - did none of you hear about this? The last game, did ya'll see him, he was all over the QB. He said he finally just started goin completely after the QB. He still has juice, maybe Jaguars can rejuvinate.
 
You know if Parcells had told the guy to get water for the guys in the huddle during a timeout that would have been his job...it makes no difference to me what they told him to do..line up outside, rush the QB or be a waterboy the guy was horrible and got paid millions to be horrible.

His effort was awful and on top of that he's a crybaby. I'm sure that's a cap hit Jerry was glad to take.

Well maybe The jags should look at signing her instead she wont even need a mouthguard she can just take out her dentures in the locker room.

Wiley will be a nonfactor, if anything line him up over Seth Wand he could use a confidence boost.
