ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP)—The Oakland Raiders and star cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha failed to agree on a long-term contract before Tuesday’s deadline for franchised players.

The Raiders placed the exclusive franchise tag on Asomugha in February, which guaranteed Asomugha more than $9 million in 2008 and did not allow him to negotiate with any other team.

Asomugha has not signed the tender and has been unable to practice with the team during offseason workouts.

The two sides had up until Tuesday to sign a long-term contract. With no deal in place, Asomugha will be guaranteed $9.765 million for this season as soon as he signs.

Asomugha has already informed the Raiders that he will not miss any regular-season games in a holdout, but it is uncertain whether he will report to training camp when it opens next week.

Asomugha will be eligible for free agency again after the upcoming season. But the Raiders could try to sign him to a long-term deal after the season or choose to use the franchise tag again, which would guarantee Asomugha about $11.7 million in 2009.

The Raiders already signed a big deal with a cornerback this offseason, giving DeAngelo Hall a $70 million, seven-year contract following a trade with Atlanta. Hall will be guaranteed about $24 million in that deal.

holy smokes alot of money on CB's

Its all very well having all that money tied up in CB's, but a lack of pass rush will make any CB's look average, just look at Denver. Qb's had a week to throw every down, and Bly and Bailey couldnt play to their ability.

If the Texans want to make a splash in FA next offseason this guy would be a good way to do it...

:d:

Yeah, but the problem with that is that if they're going to spend that kind of money on a FA, it would probably mean that among D-Rob, Bennett and Reeves, at least two turned out to disappoint.

I still think we're a good offseason away from making a huge splash in FA. Asomugha would be absolutely awesome in our backfield, but before we're spending that much money in FA, I'd like to make sure our DL and OLB's are shored up.

Just think if Colvin is the answer at the other DE spot for pass rushing, Weaver on rushing downs. We sign Asomugha to a multi year deal, Dunta comes back healthy, Bennett continues to improve and Molden gets some playing time and fits in- we can release Reeves (only $4M guaranteed or keep him). Then in the draft we can find a stud OLB and FS in rounds 1 and 2... sheesh thats a scary defense.

I might go for Asomugha if they are willing to spend the money next offseason. I won't go after Haynsworth though. Even though he is one of the greatest on the DL in the whole league, he doesn't have a place in this locker room. (although Mario, Amobi, Haynsworth, and Colvin would be a nightmare for QB's- we wouldn't even need a secondary)

Under the scenario you outline (which I love BTW), Dunta's going to be in line for a big contract at the end of next season. Not Clements or Samuel (or Asomugha) dollars, but a pretty nice chunk of change. I think Asomugha is clearly in the same league as Samuel and better than Clements, so I would welcome him on to the roster with open arms. But if Bennett continues to improve, I don't see the Texans rewarding him by demoting him to nickel-back so we can have two high-priced starting corners.

Do not forget about Molden. I think the Texans are set at CB with young players who are emerging, a long with vetern pressance and leadership in Dunta.
