The Man is still in the lead, after Benson's arrest for drunk driving last night at 5th and Colorado.

Chicago Bears running back Cedric Benson arrested on drunken driving charge

By Patrick George | Saturday, June 7, 2008, 08:47 AM

Chicago Bears and former University of Texas running back Cedric Benson was arrested and charged with drunken driving in downtown Austin, police said.

Austin police spokeswoman Veneza Aguinaga said Benson was driving his BMW at 5th and Colorado Streets between 3 and 4 a.m. when he was pulled over for a running a red light.

After an officer had him perform a series of sobriety tests, Benson was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, Aguinaga said. After his arrest, he refused a breathalyzer and blood test.
I like how the Statesman goes with the "Chicago Bears running back Cedric Benson" headline. Sneaks in "former University of Texas" later in the story. Yeah, Benson was an angel at UT. Didn't go bad until he got to the big city.

Or he was really good at not getting caught in Austin.

Hopefully Benson is done in Chicago. The Bears don't need this loser.

They did this last month as well. Kind of easy being an Angel when UT tells the cops you're innocent because they checked and the cops mysteriously go away. :spit:

Actually in Austin most of the players are protected, unless it is outside of dowtown area. Since Austin is surrounded by a lot of little towns, a lot do get busted. I recall Benson getting arrested and charges dropped, he was never disciplined prior to the charges being dropped. This is going by memory.

From rotoworld:

Cedric Benson was told to leave Bears OTAs on Monday. GM Jerry Angelo says the team will "in all likelihood" make a statement this afternoon.

Benson reportedly showed up, but was immediately asked to leave by coach Lovie Smith. The educated guess is that his release will be announced later this afternoon. We do have a feeling that the statement will not be Lovie saying "Cedric Benson is our starting running back."

He was just released via espn breaking news.

Yep, he's been waived. What a waste!

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- The Chicago Bears waived running back Cedric Benson on Monday. Benson played in 35 regular season games for the Bears over the past three seasons with 12 starts. He was originally acquired in the first round of the 2005 draft.

"Cedric displayed a pattern of behavior we will not tolerate," General Manager Jerry Angelo said. "As I said this past weekend, you have to protect your job. Everyone in this organization is held accountable for their actions. When individual priorities overshadow team goals, we suffer the consequences as a team. Those who fail to understand the importance of 'team' will not play for the Chicago Bears."

So how long before someone asks if the Texans will pick him up?

Oh wait, I guess I just did.

Damn me.:lion:

That Angelo can give Benson the boot on character issues helps hide the fact that Benson was pretty close to becoming a bust based on performance. With RBs like Alexander and Henry already on the FA market, Benson will have a difficult time landing a NFL job. Maybe Ricky can teach him to speak Canadian.

They didn't sneak it in the story. They said it in the first sentence.

What was the headline again?
Had Benson saved a little girl from drowning in Barton Creek, the headline would have read:

Former Longhorn a hero in Austin once again

And anyone who has read The Daily Longhorn, er The American Statesman on a regular basis would agree.

Agreed and AMEN...lol.

Exactly!! They do it all the time, you should have seen the crap when fans were complaining about the Texans not being shown and they tried to make it out as the fans were ungrateful and lacked knowledge.

The stateman is a joke of a paper as is all of Austins news coverage.

On the news tonight his lawyer said the Bears were premature in letting him go without the facts. He went on to add that if Cedric were averaging four and a half yards per carry instead of three and a half yards per they probably would never have done it.

I was thinking yyyyyyyyyup, and your point would be?

Lawyer: Just because my client sucks at his jub does not mean he should lose it. :mcnugget:

Ok. I'll start it. Could Gibbs do anything with him? How long do you wait? Suspension? Come on. I know you wanna.

Mike

I'd bet Jerry Jones has his lawyers scrambling to find a way to sign him too. However, I'm not sure if 2 arrests in a month actually qualifies him to play for the Cowboys yet. I agree with the trifecta scenerio. That'll guarantee him a place with the Thugs or atleast the Raiders.

What is with the constant UT bashing on this board? Do we have a bunch of Aggies or something?

While there are many Aggies on the board, there are an equal number of 'sips.

The bashing comes mostly in part from a lot, (not all) of the arrogance and sense of entitlement from Austin. To wit, their un-wavering love and ignorance for a great college quarterback that quite frankly hasn't really lived up to the hype in the NFL.

Back to topic..... Benson is the POS we thought he was.

Personally I believe that it has it's roots in the constant UT crying and whining about the Texans not taking their players and particularly about them not taking Vince Young.

I don't have a lot of college football interest. Apart from it being the source of all NFL players it doesn't hold a lot of interest for me. I follow UH a little bit and Rice. I keep up with the rest of the "Texas Teams" to a lesser degree because they're from Texas but I don't live and die with longhorns or aggies. College rivalries are easy for me to ignore.

Having said that I was really excited by the UT program when they beat USC in the Rose Bowl and I was thinking (Vince being a junior at that time) wouldn't it be cool if we could pick Bush this year and then get Vince when he comes out next year. In hindsight I know how stupid that thought looks but at the time I was very interested in him and hoped he'd stay another season in school to make it possible. He didn't and the longhorn fans descended on the Texans like one of the biblical plagues. By the time the Texans took Mario I was praying that the longhorn loving S.O.B.'s would just leave now that their golden boy was in Nashville. Of course they didn't and we're still hearing that crap out of them from time to time.

I believe that if longhorn fans find that they and their team are hated around Houston Texans fans and websites by some or just treated badly in a very general way then they should understand that they, or their fellow fans earned that and made their own bed. They just crammed that Vince Young crap down our throats to the point where many of us just tune them out.

Also for the record I was interested in Benson back in the day (look how that turned out) and I wanted the Texans to take Derrick Johnson badly. I have no problem with UT players (or at least I "had" no problem with them) and I am pulling for the big guy to be a major steal this year. I just started feeling like listening to a UT fan was like listening to a really obnoxious Cowboys fan who happened to be wearing an orange shirt.

The only UT hating I do is because of this. I am a UT fan through and through, but I hate the VY man love that Austin still hasnt gotten over. Keye proved this last season and made us Texans fans suffer.

I'm in on the UT/Statesman bashing because I've put up with the steady load of the above mentioned for 25 years now. I saw a place to vent.

It isn't just that, but also the Houston bashing they do at every opportunity. It could be the Texans, Astros, Rockets, traffic, you name it. You cant defend it on the air either because they will cut you off the minute they know where you are coming from then bash you knowing you have been disconnected.

I'm an equal opportunity hater but hate the Aggies more than the Horns. I grew up with two Horn brothers so I loved them growing up. I still did even while at TCU. I have friends though that do whine too much and I always laughed at sports bars when their fans get up in arms about every call. I just had Aggie friends that were worse. They have since calmed but right out of college I relished Aggie losses.

Now I get it... Other than being a Frog from Ft. Worthless, that's what's wrong with you... ;)

If the Cowboys get Pacman, maybe we should try Benson.

Why do we need a resident F-up on the team? Seriously he just got two arrest with in a month of each other regarding alcohol, no one is going to touch him until the cases are resolved.

Besides he sucked before all the off the field issues, we have had enough of sucky players.

I like Cedric but it looks more and more like perhaps on the pro level he's going to be a complimentary back unless he can stay healthy and prove he can carry the load like at UT.

Besides if we signed him it might cut into the carries Steve Slaton might get and Steve is way more explosive then Cedric.

In a word, no. It makes no sense football-wise, or anything else-wise. He's 25 and has a lot in the tank, yes - but that's the reason there will be someone out there willing to pay him real money. I wouldn't sign the guy for the league minimum, and neither would the Texans. He does not have the kind of burst you need for the ZBS. He can't get to the corner very well. He's just not good, and we already have plenty of competition. If we get another RB, it will just be another body for training camp fodder... not a guy like Benson.

Also - why would the Cowboys getting Pacman have any bearing on what we do? What do those two things have to do with each other at all?

Why in the world would we need Cedric Benson?

We already have Ahman Green, Chris Taylor, Darius Walker, Chris Brown, and Steve Slaton

What can it hurt? I'm more of 'meh' on this but I also know that we don't have a standout RB as of right now. Our staff is questionable until they put up some yards.

I don't really think we need to sign him but I certainly don't think it would hurt anything. Another body to push our staff. Benson was an incredible talent at UT and that's saying a lot being in the shadows of Earl Campbell and Ricky Williams. So he failed miserably in Chicago. I think he's got enough talent to be given a shot somewhere once again.
