Does anyone know who the team was that called about our #26 pick and what the offer was? I would really like to know.

Smith then rolled the dice and gambled that Brown still would be available, trading back to the 26th spot with Baltimore and acquiring third- and sixth-round picks from the Ravens. The Texans then waited as the picks came off the board, keeping their fingers crossed that Brown would still be there.

"We were worried, but I tried to be the calm before the storm because I had a room full of people who were scared to death that we weren't going to get him," Smith said. "I had to put a good face on."

The telephone rang in the Texans' war room at Reliant Stadium. It was a team inquiring if the Texans wanted to trade down again.

"I heard the phone ring, and I screamed to Rick, 'Don't answer it!' " Kubiak said.

Seattle, I think they offered their 7th pick in the 2nd round. I heard that they were willing to throw in their 4th round pick with it.

I can't remember if I read it or heard it somewhere, but I think it was the Seahawks who were trying to move up 2 spots.

I can't imagine us not moving down two slot for an extra pick. I don't think the Chargers or Seahawks were in need of an OT, so if it was for their #28 I don't think we would've pass that up to get an extra pick.

Doesnt mean sombody else wouldnt have traded right in front of us to take him.

It was the Seahawks, but we declined. Seems there was scuttlbutt that the 49ers were trying to move up and that they might jump in front of us to grab Brown.

Seahawks & 49ers could use offensive line help. funny, after all this the Texans got it right once again :)

A second and fourth to move down two spots in the first is laughable?

exactly...who cares if you miss out on Brown if it gets you a 2nd Round to go with the #28 overall. Brown would have been there at #28...he would have been there at #40. I think if they were offered a 3rd to drop 8 spots I am pretty sure they would have taken a 2nd to drop 2....just my opinion...do the math.

Me thinks they may have been offered something but doubt it was any kind of package like that.

I think they were talking about the trade without the 28th pick. It would have been the 7th pick in the second round and a fourth for the 26th. I doubt it would have been the 26th for the 28th, a 2nd and a 4th, because that would be more to move down two spots then we got moving down from 18 to 26. (a 3rd and 5th)

who cares if you miss out on Brown .

I did. I cared. Been waiting for an anchor for four years. Look on the bright side SH. Now you've got someone you can pile drive into the ground everytime he messes up.

I'm sure Brown would have been there at 28, but not much after that. He would have been taken within the first couple of picks of the second rate at the worst.

Without a doubt. Either Green Bay stays put at 30 and takes him or St. Louis takes him at 33. There's no way he would've been there at 40.

Exactly. That's how I took the response when someone answered about what Seattle was offering, anyway.

And - just as much as some of you "have heard" that this team or that team offered up this or that for the pick - I've "heard" from multiple places that BOTH Green Bay and St. Louis were high on Brown, and could very well have snatched him up in the early second. (STL 2nd pick in 2nd round, GB 5th pick in 2nd round - 30th in the first before they traded.)

Also - there were a handful of mocks that had Brown as a first-rounder... and Brown wasn't nearly the only first-rounder taken that wasn't widely projected as a first-rounder.

Rick and Gary are smarter than you. This is what they do. They interview the prospects. They dig up dirt on the prospects. They investigate every angle. They are heavily invested in Alex Gibbs, and somehow SOMEWAY trust him more than they trust you. Crazy, huh?

I was taken aback by the pick as well when it happened - but when you really look at it, it's hard to criticize. He was the best remaining pass-blocking LT who also fit the ZBS system... they put money into hiring Gibbs who has produced results over and over and over again. They let him have his guy.

Could they have gotten better value at #26? Sure they could have... but they placed a higher level of importance on the LT position, rather than deciding to go for the best player available.

Again - I don't LOVE LOVE LOVE this pick, but after thinking it through, I'm good with it. My only issue with it now is that he doesn't sound like he can start immediately.

Those of you who are all red-faced over the pick and hilariously think you know more about this stuff, and could make better picks than Kubiak and Smith - I'm really, really glad you don't have a job with the Texans.

very well said - rep given

Great post Diehard. There are a million and one things going on in every war room on draft day. Any pick or trade can have a big impact on what unfolds from there on. For anyone to say that they know who offered what in a trade, or who would have been available at a certain pick is sadly mistaken. Heck, the teams themselves don't even know if guys will be available at certain times.

Great post Diehard. If Brown was your guy, take him. If you had him 3rd after Williams and Alberts, then you got a hell of a LT. If you think a RB in the 2nd and DT in the 4th are better than getting a potential superstar LT, then you dont know the game or our past to well.

Me thinks you are refering to me. I am happy with Brown. Said so many times. BUT! What makes you label him a potential superstar? Who is to say that RB and that DT arent potential superstars? Brown is a project pick with athleticism. I think hell be a very good player but "potential superstar"? But hey if it makes youre argument look better.

Well, the fact that a oline guru went ballsack crazy over him says potential superstar. Im not saying Rb's and DT's dont have impact, but you have to have a line in place for RB's to do their thing. No one was wilder about Red being a Texan than me, but them are the apples. The difference between Slaton and Forte isnt that vast, but between Brown and another LT taken later in our system is. At least in my opinion. Ive been waiting too long for our LT, so maybe my thought process is turned around.
