LB Jerod Mayo

Ole Miss Texan

Hall of Fame
I've just started seeing a lot of love for this guy today and yesterday. He's never even been mention on these boards (or at least much at all) much less a possible 1st rd pick for us. Kind of sounds like Patrick Willis in the fact he played OLB up until his last year and then switched to MLB- so I guess those that didn't know him before hand thought he was only a MLB. Heck, I won't complain one bit if we select the best SEC linebacker- can't ever go wrong there...

I hadn't read much about him because I always thought he was more of a MLB. But after doing some reading last night/today, it sounds like he's able to play all three spots and is a great fit for the 4-3 defense. Hope we can turn this into constructive talk for those that have watched him a lot.

Jerod Mayo
6'2" 230lbs
Tennessee

Overview
An athletic linebacker who made the move from outside to inside linebacker last season with spectacular results -- earning first team SEC accolades in leading the conference with 140 tackles. Mayo's speed and size may cause scouts to consider moving him back outside at the next level, but he seemed to gain more and more confidence at his new position as the season wore on, averaging 15 tackles over his final four games.

Analysis
Positives: Athletic build with good upper definition and the frame to add an additional 10 pounds without a significant loss of speed. ... Instinctive defender. ... Attacks the line against the run. ... Good change of direction and rare speed for the position in coverage. ... Good open-field tackler with the body control to break down in space and make the sure tackle. ... Flashes some explosiveness as a hitter. ... Good timing on the blitz and shows an ability to close when the ball is near.

Negatives:
Physical, but might be better on the perimeter than the inside. ... Flashes strong hands to disengage from blocks, but often resorts to running around them rather than facing them up. ... Generally a wrap-up tackler, but will lower his shoulder to lay a big hit and sometimes slip off.

Jerod Mayo
6'- 1 1/4"
242lbs
4.54 40-yd dash

Strengths:
Very athletic...Has excellent timed speed and quickness..Physical and plays bigger than he is...Has terrific range and does a great job in pursuit...Reliable tackler and will deliver the big hit...Smart with good awareness and instincts...Has a non-stop motor...Fluid & smooth in coverage...Versatile...Productive..Nice program pedigree.

Weaknesses:
Undersized and doesn't have either the ideal height or bulk that you look for..Has trouble taking on and shedding blockers...Needs to be protected up front...Just a marginal blitzer...Durability may be an issue...Probably not a good fit for everyone.

Notes:
The next in a long line of top Volunteer linebackers...Can project inside or outside depending on the defensive scheme and has experience at both...Best fit may be as a middle 'backer in a Cover 2 or on the weakside..Not a traditional thumper but he will prove awfully attractive to teams that are willing to sacrifice some size for speed...He will draw comparisons to Al Wilson and those are reasonably accurate.

Jerod Mayo LB
6'1 242
Tennessee Jr.
4.54

Mayo had just 13 tackles as a freshman, but became an impact performer a year later. As a sophomore, he had 83 tackles, 12.5 for loss, and five sacks on the year. Mayo became a tackling machine as a junior, finishing the year with 140 tackles, 8.5 for loss, 1.5 sacks and an interception.

Mayo is very active and aggressive at the linebacker position. He quickly reads the action and flies to the football. He has excellent straightline speed, but also shows the ability to change direction and accelerate quickly to be around the action at all times. He is tough, willing to take on bigger players, and will deliver a blow to the ball carrier. Mayo has the versatility to play inside or out in the NFL, making him a fit for most teams.

Mayo has only average size for the LB spot, which may limit him in some schemes. Inside, he will need big bodies in front of him to tie up blockers because he can be taken out of plays when a lineman gets their hands on him.

Mayo has the ability to be a real playmaker from his inside linebacker position, or potentially on the weakside. His aggressiveness and speed could make him the second true linebacker selected, potentially cracking the first round.

2008 NFL Draft Prospect - Scouting Report
Big things were expected of Mayo this season after he earned second-team All-American honors from Rivals.com in 2006 with 83 tackles (a total that would have been higher had he not suffered a knee injury late in the season). He showed that there were no lingering effects from the injury in 2007, as he put together a fantastic campaign. His 140 tackles -- 79 solo -- led the Southeastern Conference. He had 8.5 tackles for loss, one sack, one interception, two pass breakups and five quarterback hurries. He was named first-team All-SEC by the AP and league coaches.

Mayo covers a lot of ground, as evidenced by his high number of tackles. He's explosive off the ball, which makes him an effective blitzer. He has decent speed -- 4.67 seconds in 40-yard dash. He's capable as a run stopper and in pass coverage. He has good instincts and is a hard hitter. He doesn't miss many opportunities to make tackles.

Mayo needs to improve at the point of attack and become better at shedding blockers, a key to success in the NFL. That makes him project as an outside linebacker in the NFL. He also needs to improve at closing down running lanes. If he can get his speed in the 4.5s at the combine, it could greatly improve his draft stock. He is expected to be a second- to third-round selection.

can't say i'd be upset with him in the first, plenty of posters say we can get a quality cb in the 3rd, all i want is a 16 game starter in the first

sounds good.. i thought he was a MLB exclusively so hadn't done much research on him.. still would be 6 or 7 on my list..(if hes projected as our SAM lb )

It sounds like he's pretty good in coverage. One of the weakest spots on our defense is our inability to cover TEs and facing the Dallas Clarks and Alge Crumplers of the division we need a guy that wont get scorched. FF fans love starting Dallas Clark when he plays the Texans. Maybe this guy can change that?

Charlie Casserly was just on NFL Total Access on the NFL Network. His biggest surprise player was Jarod Mayo. Said he's his highest rated LB in the whole draft and reminds him of a certain other player, Demeco Ryans.

Bash Casserly all you want... but he WAS the one that drafted Demeco. I'm really starting to warm up to Mayo.

(I'm thinking: Albert, Williams, Mendenhall, Rivers, Mayo, Cason...)

I want to know who is perpetuating the myth that Casserly had any impact on the '06 draft.

He was only GM in title at that point and didn't make any decisions. In fact, I know I have heard/read from more than one place that the decision to draft DeMeco was made (or pushed) by one of our coaches (Holland I believe.) Casserly's fate with the Texans was sealed at that point. I'm sure his opinions were considered but the idea that a concrete decision be made by someone we knew had no future with the teams is ridiculous.

I don't think it'd be smart of us to think Casserly made all the decisions and had authority to make the decisions outright, because like you said, he was leaving. Until I hear Kubiak or McNair say that Casserly had '0' input on the draft, I won't believe it. I've been wondering a similar thing though, who DO you give credit to for the '06 Draft? I think if you said Kubiak, you wouldn't be telling the whole truth. Casserly? only to an extent. We may never know who exactly was the person that made each specific pick, there are just rumors here and there. But I also think we listened to a lot of what Casserly had to say during that time.

The point being, Casserly was the GM when Demeco was selected and HAD to of been onboard for the selection. (Even if he was against the pick, he was forced to live with it). He saw Demeco have an outstanding rookie season and another great sophomore year as well, in the nfl. For him to be comparing Mayo to Demeco (whom he knows of first hand) can only be a good thing.

Casserly comes home
Former Texans general manager Charley Casserly, who works for CBS and the NFL Network, was at Reliant Stadium last week doing interviews and gathering information on the draft.

Casserly interviewed defensive end Mario Williams. In the last draft he ran for the Texans, Casserly used their first two picks on Williams and middle linebacker DeMeco Ryans.

I wouldn't mind this pick up. Any SLB, RB, CB, or LT of good value I am ok with drafting in the first.

The thing is that this guy is more of a WLB/MLB. Not sure he should be a SLB.

Mayo reminds me more of Beason last year than Willis. Not blazing speed but crazy agility and agressiveness

I'd obviously take Rivers over him and maybe Conner.

Ah, Beason was easily the second best LB in the draft last year and should of went alot higher.

Mayo is the one guy I mentioned in the suprise pick thread. I'd love to have him. I think his stock is high enough where he may be getting looks above us with Rivers though. But I think he would make our LB core tops.

I was very impressed with how he played. Looked like he could diagnose the play and react quickly. Quick guy and good tackler. Some of the other links on youtube had an interview with him, sounds like a really intelligent well spoken guy, too.

The thing I was impressed with was his attacking style of play...

He's a very downhill kind of guy....Speed, quickness, athleticism, agressiveness, coverage ability....If the Texans could trade back, pick up an extra pick in the process, and nab this guy I'd be pretty pleased...

He'd definitely add another element to our defense...

he won't be there later methinks

You think he might go before 18 or soon afterward ?

And now that I think about it, I do think he's going to go earlier than some pundits are projecting...

There are rumblings the Pats like him over Rivers.

That could set up perfectly if Matt Ryan or Sedrick Ellis are available, I can see the Pats moving down some slots for a team to jump Baltimore or Cincinnati and the Pats may still be able to get Mayo at #10,13, or 14?

Interesting: New England/New Orleans trade. NO- Sedrick Ellis, NE- Jerod Mayo

I was really hoping we could have had a shot him.
