Steve McNair retires..

I don't think he's a Hall of Famer. He was a solid, good QB in the NFL but I don't think he was great. He had 3 great year in 2001, 2002, and 2003. I don't know if that's enough to put him in the HOF.
 
lol.. i cant remember where i heard he had really re-dedicated himself to offseason workouts to play better this yr... guess not eh?

I thought that, and then I reconsidered and decided that it almost all turned out for the best. If I could change one single thing about the Oilers/Titans/Texans "triangle" and the Houston-Nashville connection it would be to have left the "Oiler history" that so many people (myself included) care about in Houston as was done in Cleveland. If every single other part of it went down the exact same way I think that one little item would go a long way towards putting all the animosity behind us. At least the animosity stemming from the move. All the bad blood between the Texans and Titans should come from events on the field, not events in Bud Adams conference room 8 years ago.

Even if we didn't use it (the name) it would still be completely "ours" and Nashville would have had the equivalent of an expansion team only it would have been well established as were the Baltimore Ravens. Everyone would have won in that scenario and then threads like this one could stay about the player who was retiring and not drift inevitably into an Oiler/Titan slap fight.

And I'm not knocking you at all for saying it Texan Bill. Like I said, I had the exact same thought.

Congrats on a very good career Steve McNair. Kick back and enjoy not getting your chest crushed this year. HOF? I just don't think so. Very, very good but not HOF material.

One of the few, fan friendly events I ever remember Dud having was when the Oilers actually had a draft party the year Steve was drafted. One of my fondest memories is of being able to stand on the 50 yard line of the Astrodome that day.

Have a great life Steve. Sorry that the Titans ripped you off and kicked you to the curb like a dog.
 
I remember eating fried chicken with him on the tailgate of his Ford pickup in the parking lot of the dome after a game against Cincy which was the second to the last game ever played in Houston. I was getting his autograph and his family busted out chicken and he offered me some.

If I am not mistaken, this is marks the last of the originally drafted Houston Oilers. Am I correct or is someone else out there still?

Eddie George in 1996... Also several rounds later - Jon Runyan.

I'm talking about guys still in the league playing. If I'm not mistaken Steve Mcnair is the last of them.

Also Runyan I thought Runyan was drafted when they were the Tennessee Oilers.
 
On another note, if the Texans FO wants to call Baltimore about acquiring a 2nd for Sage, they can use my cell phone.

I guess I read your first post wrong... Anyway it would only be John Runyan. And, he was drafted the same year as Eddie George - as a Houston Oiler.

Respect the guy and had a great career. Unfortunately his numbers just don't translate to HOF. Best of wishes in your life post NFL.

Was also thinking about what happens when Bud Finally dies because at least it doesn't look like he'll sell anytime soon what would happen to the past of the franchise. Could Houston negoiate the rights back for at least the Oilers past? Then perhaps we could get an Earl Campbell Statue like he deserves in Reliant and be able to pay hommage to other Oiler greats.

Why can't we do that anyway, esp for Earl? Earl was NEVER a Titan!! His heart and soul was put into football in the city of HOUSTON. Hell, just put a uni on him and bronze it!! If BUD bit*ches about the derrick on the helmet then just leave it off. It's the man that counts, not the connection to Bud!

Yeah .. you can only wish you had a great team and the team you supported actually had an owner who is not a steaming pile of poo with a possum on his head. You realize I as a Texan fan is far superior to any titan fan.

I still think we should retire "34" for Texans fans, as homage to Earl and the other Houston greats. I doubt we will ever see a player wearing that number that could eat at the same table as Nolan, Hakeem, and Earl (obviously I hope so, but those guys are once-in-a-lifetime Hall of Famers).

Put a big ol' statue of the Tyler Rose where those dumb legless bulls are (never understood the lack of legs on those things...what, are they representing our running game? :um: oh yeah, it's art).

yes DB.. and She Texan afraid with all the records locked up(Oilers), the people that played for them and there legacy will disappear also over time.. It would be neat for the City of Houston to have a "34" memorial

That's an interesting thought and worth taking into consideration. The question is would a young Steve McNair fit into a system like that and be successful?

I wouldn't be surprised to find that McNair might have less success in a system like the one Martz advocates. Much would depend on surrounding personnel but potentially good players do poorly in situations they don't fit in. It happens and it could have happened to Steve McNair. He might have been lucky to be on a team run by a defensive-minded, run-first coach. We'll never know.
 
It was much easier for me to root against the Titans once Eddie George & Steve McNair left the team. I have tons of respect for both, as they played the game the way it was meant to be played. I don't know if McNair will make the HOF, but he's a HOFer in my mind. Maybe not a great passer, ala a Fouts or Moon, but a great football player. He will be missed.

Ha! I did color commentary for that game while I was at SHSU. I remember it well. It was crazy to see that stadium packed... so much fun. And if I remember right (maybe I don't remember it as well as I thought, heh) SHSU won the game rather handily, which was kind of a surprise. McNair got injured in the game getting hit out of bounds, and I remember being pissed because that night on ESPN, they said "McNair was taken to a local Huntsville, Alabama hospital for examination and was released." I thought, FINALLY, Huntsville gets on the sports map for ONE DAY and ESPN screwed it up. Wrong Huntsville, morons. LOL
