boring offseason

It seems that last year there was sooo much more to look forward to. Mario looked like he was coming into his own. David Carr had been cut and had a new guy that we weren't sure about. We had gotten a vetern running back who looked to be in the best shape of his life etc. . . This year I can't really say that I've seen much to just really catch my eye. No big name signings, no big name cuts. I'm just ready for the draft to get here just so I can see something happen. Is anyone else feeling this way or is it just me.
 
In partial agreement. It has been a mediocre free agency. Our biggest signing was probably resigning Will Demps. Other than that, it's been pretty boring. At the same time, there hasn't been a lot out there for us to sign that would have been a significant upgrade other than if we had signed Michael Turner.

No, IM SIKED FOR THE SEASON, we have a real life team, lol.... i cant wait to see our O line play and how our running game works with whoever we have, i cant wait to see Andre be the BEST reciever in the league, I cant wait to see mario, okoye and whatever new guy we throw on the other side DESTROY offenses, I cant wait to see ryans and bennet tear it up, I am soooo excited for next year and looking forward to it very much.

I am not a fan of the draft(watching that is, i think its a joke) Id rather just see who we got the next day and evaluate it myself, I trust our coaches and GM to take who they think is best, plus i can take a football break with the way the Rockets are playing and Baseball season starting. so, Im just as excited....

I love Baseball, I enjoy basketball, Football is fun!!!!

But the weird thing is that I dont like the NFL much but IM freaking crazy about the Texans....

Id rather watch college ball, and most NFL games that i watch(besides Texans) is really to check up on the guys I watched in college, i think that might change as i get older and notice more guys in the league...
 
it's definitely been anything but exciting this offseason, but that might be the best thing to happen for the texans. no big signings, nobody really getting away, and just simply nothing other than a few "bleh" visits at all so far. as someone said in another thread though, this could be perfect. unlike previous years we arent building our hopes up on boom or bust players (wade, green, etc) and dont have to worry about big ugly contracts for "filler" veterans (weaver, moulds) that cause problems later on. we're definitely still in a building mode and it appears we're trying to keep ourselves able to continue building in future seasons. the last two years kubiak's spent a lot of time chopping casserly's roster apart and filling up the "other 31 players" and building depth ... i guess this means he likes where we're at right now in that regard.

i am a bit suprised though with all this coming from kubiak and smith. coming from a system that would gamble on vets and doesnt hesitate to trade away draft picks it's hard to believe they'd have such a quiet offseason. it's boring now, but hopefully that means we'll have plenty of excitement during the season.
 
As i sit here thinking about this thread id have to say that as excited as I am for the season, id have to agree that yes, this has been a boring offseason so far....
 
There's two main reasons for the slow offseason.

1.We have enough talent that were not trying to completly retool our roster.
2.Cap space
- were not in cap trouble(releasing players)
- but we dont have the room to make in big name FA aquisitions.
 
Yeah, this offseason has been pretty quiet but it does have its advantages. IMO, the best teams usually keep their own talent and build through the draft. Seems like the Texans have a solid core now, so if our biggest offseason aquisitions is to re-sign our own, then we're looking pretty good for all the right reasons. Players wanting to stick around is a clear sign that we're going to be more competitive next season.

I don't see us making any big splashes this offseason. Although I must admit that it was a big surprise last season to see the Texans pull off the Schaub trade without any warning, I'd be happy to see our guys with another year of the system under there belts.

With that said, the draft can't come soon enough!!!

I'd rather have a ho-hum offseason where we resign our 2 best FAs and sign a couple guys with potential that dont break the bank then go out and overpay a solid at best player on the downside of his career and hear the whole forum gripe about it.

I think the biggest player signing was Andre Davis. The Demps re-signing is second.

I'm hoping our best new acquisitions will be the Gibbs and Rhodes

Don't :panic:

You're looking at this off-season (to date) the wrong way.

Key signings/additions so far this off-season are Alex Gibbs and Ray Rhodes. I like both of those pick-ups!! ;)
 
Yeah, it has been kind of boring, but definitely productive. I mean, we signed two coaches in Rhodes and Gibbs that should help out on both sides of the ball and took care of our biggest free agent priorities in Demps and Davis. I can't complain too much.
 
Every year about this time I post about how bad I think March sucks for football fans. This year is no exception.

It's really a "lose-lose" situation for us now. NFL Europe is gone. AAFL isn't happening (last I checked and it's not like I was excited about it anyway). The season has been over long enough for me to really miss it but the draft is still too far away to make me feel better.

Free agency is by it's very nature a problem unto itself. If your team is already good or playing it smart then you seem to not have any interesting signings to talk about, If your team is spending money and bringing in guys left and right then you have something to talk about but deep down inside you know that all these big contracts are going to add up and that most of these guys never work out the way you want them to. Plus if you're bringing in a lot of people then odds are good you support a team that sucks and needs a lot of help (mostly, there are exceptions).

I hate March and I hate March Madness. I'll never understand the appeal of it all. To me "March Madness" is what sets in when NFL withdrawl reaches it's critical stage.

At least we're not fighting over Reggie Bush and Vince Young or demanding that Dom Capers be fired or David Carr be cut. It could be worse. Much like WesmanTexanFan and Scooter I view the quiet as a good sign. Our brain trust finally has a brain and there's not enough broken about our team at this point to take crazy chances in free agency trying to fix it.
 
i like it that we've been quiet.. most often its the teams that make a big splash and get all the media support flop (dolphins 2 yrs ago, SF, Arizona) whereas an unheralded team who doesnt make many big moves comes 'out of nowhere' (giants, vikes, bills, tacks etc). the only team i can think of that lived up to their hype were the browns and that was mainly because of an unheralded move they made (picking up derek anderson in FA)
 
I think this has been the best off season for me ever. I know that I am now solidly confident in my expectations from Rick Smith. Then to have the other coaches come in has been sweet. I think Sherman was a good sign but his leaving was timely as we should be ready in 08 to go full ZBS.

I literally agonize over the cap and free agency often considering pretty ridiculous scenarios. Signing AD and Demps was huge to me. AD's showed commitment to players who do well by Smith and both could have gone elsewhere for more cash. Bentley, Reeves and Earl solidified the team. I watched every sporting news report and flipped between ESPN 1&2 to see if anyone signed over this past weekend. Never saw anything on Glenn Earl BTW.

And then the draft. Oh man. Even more exciting for me this year than the last two. We have good picks and good players should be available through round four. I have actually had several nights where I had to work next day and could not go to sleep thinking about "Left tackle or RB? Well, we can take a CB IF so an so is going to be there in fourth." There are so many different scenarios to go through and then one of you guys bring up a player I've not even thought about and there I go again.

And then? Possibles trades? Oh Lordy YES!!

I guess it's time to make the mock draft forum. I have a couple of volunteers to keep it moving (I won't start it unless we have enough interest to keep it moving) "March Madness" isn't a bad name for our annual mock draft.
 
I hate the off-season, but at least the NFL Network lets me watch various aspects of pro football 24/7. :thumbup
 
As many others in this thread are expressing, I'd also echo the sentiment that boring is good in this situation.
The only thing is that its probably unwise to "underspend", .i.e not a good idea for a team to fail to expend all of its cap resources, though I doubt that that's a concern with the Texans right now ?

Still think this is a boring off season? We trade a 6th for a starting center that can also play guard and have an offer for our back up QB. We have not even made it to the draft yet.
 
this has been a productive offseason. we traded for a center, picked up a serviceable running back that can break a big play, we resigned our two most coveted FAs of our own, lost no one really outside of Danny Clark and probably Weary. We signed a new DB that is already probably our best CB on our roster until Dunta comes back. We got one of the most respected minds in defense to come to town in Ray Rhodes and we got one of the best coaches in the NFL in Alex Gibbs to come to town.

I personally feel they should have gone after Justin Smith and Marlon McCree buts its obvious RS did not agree. We may be waiting to be a little more competitive till we start throwing around the big money.

We had a great offseason imho. Not a big sexy offseason, but we addressed a lot of our deficiencies (coaching, RB, CB) and we didn't lose much.

Good post and we are going to wrap up with a great draft and just maybe a free agent after June cuts that will add strength.

I don't see what you base that on. He has not made any recent ridiculous offers through our new GM. He was not so cheap when he over paid in Casserly's regime for mediocre FA and he stepped up for big bucks on Carr's contract instead of signing a veteran QB and trading down. He offered Mario quite a few dollars rather than making a ridiculous trade down for less quality.

back away from the keyboard. prior to this year, we had yet to seriously address our coaching deficiencies...and still have yet to upgrade our defensive playcaller/schemer.

go troll someone else because I am being positive and have been happy with the moves personnel wise as well as the additions to our coaching staff. its funny how I was chided when I said we needed better coaching but its quite obvious that RS shared my opinion and did work.

i try and put a positive spin on something and still someone has to be a smart ass. pure playa hatin'.

I never said McNair wouldn't spend big money on players but I did say he spent his big money unwisely when had spent it in past. as for the coaching, it is without doubt that we had a subpar coaching staff in years past. RS finally got McNair on board with spending money on coaching and improving the staff...which they have done.

until this season, we had never ponied up the money it takes to bring in good coaching...whether that was all the fault of McNair, the expansion tag, or the late hiring of Kubiak is up for debate....but he had yet to bring in quality assistants until this year.

RS obviously agreed because they did something about it.

as for the players, if you think they have paid the money it takes to get good players in Free Agency, you are wrong. they have signed the wrong players in the past and RS seems to be changing that.

i could care less what a guy like Spec thinks but Icak, you know they have had a pretty blah coaching staff since Day One and have not really gone out and got top-tier FAs. I don't know what the big debate is. They have had a good offseason. who would have thought people would try and troll me for being positive about our Texans......geez, you just can't win with some people.
 
I will change the focus to something less controversial. Does anyone think Sage might be traded?

Really?? Seriously? SH me and you have gone round and round about him spending money, and your still not right about you calling him cheap. I never said we should not upgrade, what I said, once Kubiak and RS think there is something out there better they will try and get them and McNair would open his wallet up. So NO you were not right you were dead friggin wrong, because McNair was and is not cheap.

Middle of the season you wanted Kubiak fired and the chin hired even though he said he would not coach this next year. Or did you forget about that?

Like I said I made a joke and one person did not understand where I was going with it and one person should have just laughed and said yeah ya got me he spent the money on coaches, but nope ya have to go off and rewrite history.
 
It's been a very calm, quiet off-season for the Texans and they've gone about their business in a methodical manner that I think belies how well things have gone for us this year. We've brought in Alex Gibbs and Ray Rhodes to coach. That's just huge but unless a coaching staff just gets all-out purged a hire here and there doesn't make headlines. That's completely fine by me. We've kept guys that I was seriously worried about losing like Andre Davis and Will Demps. Nobody in the media is going to go nuts over our doing that but those are the things that will really help us out next season. We've brought in people who I feel like have a great shot at making a huge impact. Chris Brown could very easily just blow up in this offense if he takes to it and Chris Myers is poised to help get our offensive line started a step or so ahead of where they would normally be.

We're doing good this year in free agency. I'm looking forward to seeing what Gary and Rick pull out of the hat come draft time. I still believe we'll end up with two first day picks. I'm sure of it.

he did spend good money on coaches this offseason but he hadn't up to this point. as for wanting Kubiak to be fired, the way the team was playing it looked like they gave up on him. Obviously, that wasnt the case and the team started playing better...and I never spoke of firing Kubes after that. ANyways, I was more of the mindsight of Hiring Chin than Firing Kubes. I just thought Chin could bring us the coaching which we lacked but Kubes and RS have proved they can bring in coaching too. Hopefully it all works out because as much as we argue, we are in the same boat and want the same thing...WINS.

I forget about very little, Spec. I have called McNair cheap before but that doesnt mean he is being cheap now. He has spent money and has shown the willingness to take a risk as well (see Brown and Green at RB). I am giving the guy total credit and I praise this offseason because its the first one where I feel we are taking steps forward and not backwards. I would have liked us to get Justin Smith but the FA money was insane with too much in guarantees this year. It's not going to change but I would rather save the big FA splash for a year that we truly feel we are one or two playmakers away from being championship contenders. I think we are close but we are not there yet. We need to establish consistency in our running game and our pass defense before we can even merit mention of playoffs or Super Bowl.

Once again, this offseason has been great since we have finally upgraded our coaching staff and we have plugged in players that fit our system at positions of need (CB, C, RB) If we can get a good edge rusher DE/OLB, CB/FS, or OT talent in the draft, we would really be sitting pretty.

I dissagree on the money thing. When I look at teams that do throw around "the big money" they have not improved anywhere near as much as we have spending half as much. San Francisco, L.A, St. Louis, Detroit, and many others regularly pay big bucks to "Revamp" their teams, and end up relasing or trading that player a few years later. I think the Texans approach of building through the draft is much more effective. Just my oppinion though.

Actually, I think the 9er's defense was pretty good last year after that big defensive offseason they had. :o

It was the offense that lost them all of those games.

And who's L.A.?

But I have to agree on your overall post, our way of doing things is much more effective. Even if it's not very sexy. ;o

The problem with the big spenders is just what you said, you can't afford to fix everything, so then you try to fill the holes in the draft, only to find out your huge FA contracts won't allow you to re-sign your young talent that you DO get through the draft, so you have to trade them, relase them or relase the big money guy, wich leaves you with your original holes that you started with. It's a revolving door.

Guys.... ya gotta get another hobby for this time of year. It just so happens that the offseason is also great golfing and fishing weather. Nice, quiet offseasons like this keep me from screwing up a birdie putt cuz I'm worried about what bonehead move the FO might make. It also means you can sleep in cuz you don't have to go play 18 before the game starts. Unless the tide is moving. If it is, you need to be out catching some reds or specks!!!

You sir can not be a true Texan fan. Do you not know that ulcers, headaches, fantasy trades/draft selections and free agent pick ups are our life's blood this time of year? You sound like a guy that would tie a string to his putter and fish the water hazzards while waiting on others to finish a hole. I HAVE NO TIME FOR SUCH TRIVIAL MATTERS. I have to help the Front Office make the correct decisions!! It is up to me to get this team to the play offs. I am what I am. A Texans fan. Whew, I need to lay my head down on my desk for a minute. HAHA... You must've been playing a course I was on if you saw the old string on the club fishing trick. technically, I have to call it hunting when I play. I do a lot of that than I do actual golfing. This offseason has been very refreshing for me because we don't have THAT many glaring holes to fill and we're not signing Joe Backups to ridiculous contracts. This front office is doing a pretty OK job, unlike the former regime.
