Zach Diles

I saw him on the field quite a bit today but didn't notice any of the starting LBs missing any significant time. At first I thought he was spelling Ryans because of the knee but I noticed them on the field together a few times. What capacity was he being used in? Was he rotating with a specific LB, was Smith rotating the entire group, or was he being used in certain situations (ie. Nickel)?

I thought they were spelling Ryans with Diles. I'll go back and look at the game later and see if I can tell what the lineups were.

I noticed Diles in there a couple of times as well and there was at least one time that I know that Ryans was not there with him.

I believe Diles was subbing for Ryans. Especially on pass downs. He seemed to hold his own, and I expect to see more of Diles in '08.

It should be noted that boulware was working out with the linebackers and he could be shifting positions .

Anyone reviewed this aspect of the game?

I wasn't able to get through the whole game last night. (We've got guests.) But I went through the first couple of Jaguar drives and there's definitely been at least one play where Diles was out there subbing for Demeco. I haven't seen one where they're both out there, yet.

D-Ryans dinged his knee again on one play and was subbed with Diles. D-Ryans didn't want to sit out so it appeared he went back in, but continued to be spelled by Diles as the game wore on him.

As far as Boulware, I honestly do not see him on the team next season. :)

When Diles came in for Ryans, he was calling the defensive plays. Mario kept looking back at him wondering what the play was. You could see Mario getting mad because he didn't know what set they were supposed to be in. At one point, Mario just got mad and held his hands in the air like "what are we supposed to be doing?". After no response, he just put his hand in the dirt and lined up.

QBs have a receiver in their helmets to get the playcall from the coaches. The defensive playercaller should get the same consideration. I've heard that this will be addressed in the offseason by the competition committee.
