Vick 'Em Shirts: Too Soon?

In an effort to poke a little fun at the Michael Vick scandal and irk rival Texas A&M, students at Texas Tech created a t-shirt depicting a football player hanging a dog with the slogan "Vick 'Em" across the front.

A&M and Tech play this weekend. The "Vick 'Em" slogan is in reference to the A&M slogan "Gig 'em" and the dog being hung in the photo is A&M's mascot. The player doing the hanging is wearing a number seven jersey -- that's Vick's number.

Amazingly enough, the shirts were created by the Theta Chi fraternity at Texas Tech in an effort to raise money for the Student Animal Legal Defense Fund. According to the Daily Toreador, Texas Tech's student paper, the t-shirts are no longer being produced, and the frat was kicked off campus as a result.

"We realize the shirts shouldn't have been printed," Geoffrey Candia, the creator of the shirts, told the AP. Hindsight is 20-20!

I know they meant well, but seriously. Why do they have to make a shirt pertaining to vick? They could have made any shirt to raise money for the cause. Try using a little creativity instead of jumping on a scam's media clout to sell your stuff. Politics, etc aside, the T-shirt is hideous and dumb.

*shakes head* Poor Tech people. I almost feel sorry for them..

As a former Tech student, a) am not overly shocked, b) I kinda laughed when I swa it, c) the money was going to go to a good cause, and d) they would have sold like mad.

As for the backlash that will come from the Ags...we (Tech students and alumns) all know you're just jealous that we have owned you since the 1995 game. And it's not like we've ever pulled weapons on another student body, nor have we defaced another team's mascot.

Careful Aggie, there are plenty of poor taste moves in your school's history as Tech's.

And have fun in Lubbock on Saturday. :devilpig:

No weapons??!?! Are you freakin' kidding me... A stale tortilla is deadly.

As far as this Saturday, no worries. I'm not holding out much hope.

Yep..animal cruelty is apparently pretty funny at Tech these days.

They didn't mean harm by it, I find humor in it. It's not like they're promoting the slaughter of animals like another Texas school. They're just poking fun at the Mike Vick situation.

I agree with those points, and I know they're hearts were in the right place. While It didn't upset me, I didn't really find it humorous. I just think they could have done a better job being more creative than using a scandal to promote their shirt sales.

Well of course.

Raising money for the Student Animal Legal Defense Fund obviously proves that they think animal cruelty is funny.

Just because somebody makes a bad decision or does something in poor taste does not automatically mean that they are bad people. Just stupid people.

You are absolutely right. Supporting the slaughter of cattle is not nearly as bad as depicting a dog being hung.

:sarcasm:

That's pathetic, MT.

Anyways, I guess it is the Aggie in me that doesn't find it very funny. Even if I weren't an Ag, I doubt I would care for it.

Get off you high horse. Your slogan and hand gesture are "Gig'Em". Or in other words stabbing a frog with a trident, yeppers that's really humane.

So I guess it would be okay to depict Reville's ears being sawed off?

Aggies are in no position to say who has class and who doesn't.

The year the bonfire collapsed and all those students died, an Aggie RB in the game against Texas that scored a TD did the cut throat thing in the endzone. Now that was beyond classless, that was just stupidity. I didn't hear one word from the Aggies about their own player doing something incredibly insensititive.

Personally, I don't see what the big deal is about this. Sure, it's classless, but so is a good portion of our society, not to mention college students in particular. And for the University to kick off the fraternity due to this seems excessive unless there other situations regarding this same fraternity.

It's just a shirt!

What a silly argument.

And I guess "Hook'em" is any better? What exactly are they gesturing towards with those two fingers?

I prefer gigging over goring.

It is common practice to saw off the horns of a bull. Snipping off the ears of a dog is not entirely commonplace. Spare me.

You must not get out much. There are many people in the Aggie community who had a hard time dealing with the cut throat. I agree with you, it was a stupid and senseless move... but just like Travis Johnson, he got caught up in the moment and didn't think.

Ah, yes the truest breed of Aggie. The A&M can do no wrong Aggie. If you inturpt Hook'Em literaly as goring then it only happens to bull fighters and guys trying to ride a bull who has his "junk" jammed against his body. Or in other words you are taking your changes in ither profession.

Gigging is literally the act of going out with a flashlight and impaling a frog with a trident. Now remeber that while there are realtivly few goring deaths every year, literally thousand of frogs are killed in this manner; and unlike deer hunting it is not a humane death.

But then again I guess it's just a frog, right?

Untill recently nearly every boxer in the world had it's ears surgicaly altered fro nothing more then appearance. While it's not like all of the ear was cut off,it was completly cosmetic and done for nothing more then the owner's pleasure.

Dude, aggies are just as classless and raiders and horns at times. To think otherwise to have your head buried in sand.

I never said that some Aggies haven't acted without class in the past. What I am saying is that to depict Aggies as a whole as classless is wrong.

Let me know when sawing off the horns of a steer is equivalent to hanging a dog will ya'? (Hint: Only one scenario leaves the animal dead.) Gig 'em, when the Ags play TCU would carry the same connotation, except that frog-fighting hasn't really caught on as a vicious underground sport last time I checked, nor was the NFL's poster-boy indicted on financing a frog-fighting ring, but I digress.

The bonfire collapsing has exactly what to do with a cut-throat gesture in a football game? Oh, that's right, you're trying the tried & true "if it bleeds it leads" approach to attacking the subject. Was the cut-throat gesture silly / stupid? Yep, but it had nada to do with people who died in the bonfire collapse. (Other than that they occurred in the same year)

It's funny that the "donating proceeds" part wasn't ever really brought up w/ the agency in question prior to the outrage. Glad to see that PC kicked in for the designer of said shirt faster than it did for TJ on Sunday.

It was a tasteless gesture by the frat - neither the first, nor last of its kind at ANY campus. Tacky, but not that big of a deal.

The same can be said for any group.

True. I am just tired of A&M getting a bad wrap in so many places. It doesn't help that you have idiots like Jim Rome writing articles full of bias and incorrect information.

No one likes to see their mascot being hung, either. I see Reveille on a daily basis and I can tell you that she is the prettiest, sweetest little pup in the world. I will fight to protect her image, as silly as that may sound.

Hoth there is no reaching this one. Has he neg repped you for being "anti-aggie" yet?

As for the shirt..... it is Lubbock i mean...what else is there to do there? I got a chuckle out of it myself...but i don't see how it's all that different from something like "Bevo it's whats for Dinner" or something along those lines.

Am curious to see a SH post though :mail:

Which would be great, if I didn't think that while most Agg's feel the same way about Reveille as you I'm almost certain that in their closet is a Saw'em off shirt. Longhorn alum feel about Bevo as you do about Reveille.

All this A&M/UT warfare over a stupid shirt. Bring on the beef - I love BBQ. As far as frog legs, I've never had 'em but I hear they taste like chicken. Got not problem there either. So saw em off and gig em all ya want. I'm ready for dinner.

There is a Korea / Fragent Meat / Vick em joke in there somewhere; but I ain't making it.

I have found most Aggies to be pretty conservative, if not classy. Sometimes when a few Aggies get together and have a few beers it might get a little out of hand, but that goes with just about any university.

IMHO most of the traditions are a little wack and definitely outdated but to classify them as inhumane is probably a bit too far. After all, many of the veterinarians/farm doctors in our state get their education and training at Texas A&M.

Last time I was neg repped by an Aggie was for saying that they should simmer down after the Citadel game last season.

You better be careful or I'll do it again.

:tease:

The same can be said of you, though. Despite my attempts, you will always have a bias against me because I am an Aggie. We have had debates before, and I am convinced that you just refuse to listen to anything I have to say just because I am an Ag. Unfortunately, our relationship ended before it began. That makes me sad.

I suppose I have never looked at it from that perspective before. I think the reason why is because from what I have seen, people would rather bash their rival on here than talk positively about their respective school. As a matter of fact, most people on here have never attended the school that they support. It's just something to think about.

Anyways, time for dinner... if I see Reveille on the way to the Commons I will give her a big hug for you guys.

Negative rep to you..... J/K

I usually have fun with all the teasing,

T'sip jokes,
Gay Zorro jokes,
Oklahoma jokes,
etc....

but sometimes it goes too far. Okay, well maybe not the OU jokes, but the others...

Forgive me if I am wrong, but isnt that basically what the Texas A&M fight song is?

My brother tried to teach me the words once & all I remember is that the whole thing is about how Texas sucks, but not one word about A&M being great.

Techsters can still have fun with Coach Fran and his illegal "VIP Newsletter" fiasco...

That may cost Coach Fran his job.
