What about Weary at Center?

Didn't Weary play some center for us early in his career? If Chris White isn't the answer, I'm thinking Weary at center and then Studdard or Black at RG would be a better line. Flanagan looks awful!

The last time Fred was a Center was back at Tennessee I believe...he may have gotten some reps but I dont think he has ever played there when the games go live.

We discussed this a little at the bar. I watched the abbreviated/edited game last night around 3:30 am and Flanagan looked fine. I will be watching it again, but I am not ready to dump Flanagan off of what I think may have been his best performance as a Texan.

Long term, Center is the biggest need out side of FS and RB in my opinion.

How did Flannigan look in run blocking from the plays you watched ?

I heard some radio guys talking about how he held his own in pass protection, but struggled in run blocking...

Just curious if you may have noticed any of the same things ?

I don't know how this wasn't noticeable....the team had very little inside push in short yardage and when the field shrank in the red zone. The war for short space in the middle of the line wasn't won by the Texans Center.

That was my thinking as well...

My initial reaction after the game was that losing McKinney really hurt us..

I haven't watched the game yet to see what individual linemen did, but I was curious because some members have been saying Flanny played o.k...

I agree. IIRC, we had at least 3 3rd and 1-2's and didn't convert on one of them. I think there was a 4th and 1 as well. All those coupled with the missed goal line opportunities is proof of poor run-blocking.

Salaam can not compete with an outside speed rush.:wild:

he did ok in pass protection...he wasn't "a joke" against the run but I don't remember watching any push at critical moments from the middle of the line yesterday.

He didn't have a great game but at least he didn't embarrass himself like Winston Justice getting run over by Osi Umenyiora for 6 sacks....this is the same Justice that lots of fans were crying we passed on or didn't trade back up for.

Oh my, no doubt. I actually felt sorry for the guy. It was obvious he was getting beat all game, but they couldn't give him any help.

No Westbrook = Phily loss

this kind of goes to show that a "new young prospect" we just MUST DRAFT to get better is not always as good as our "journeyman scrub" that we can't stand.

That has been the knock on Flanagan, he's a finesse guy who is descent in pass-blocking but weak on run blocking and has real problems with the big DTs he like all centers has to face. McKinney was always better in the rushing plays and we knew that going in.
Like others in this thread have already said, the inside push was not there,
especially in critical situations.
So what's the thinking on Chris White, not that I actually believe they'd bench
Flanagan for White given the formers relationship with the OC.

Our offensive line is still a problem. Yes, 3/5 of our line is not bad, and I am actually really excited abuot Winston. Left tackle and center remain problematic. McKinney didn't do very well at pass pro, but at least he was a good run blocker. Salaam is a problem against good rush ends.

Schaub makes these guys look better than they are. If this line had a good LT and a solid C, they would make Schaub look even better.

I'm one of those follow the ball kind of fans, but just on the couple plays I payed special attention to the center position it looked like he did fine. But then again we were running off tackle on those plays, and of course didn't get any push from the line. How many 3rd and 1's did we fail to convert? Pathetic.

Its borderline disturbing that we have Flannigan and Gado both on this roster (Sherman connection)...Sometimes I wonder if Gado is only here because we don't want to look like morons in the Morency deal.

Oh God. I watched a good bit of that game, and if ever a player was owned by another, Osi literally owned Winstson Justice. Amazingly, Andy Reid never gave any help to Justice. If I were a major Eagle fan, I would be calling for his head on a platter today. That was inexcusable. I saw them try to double team with the guard some, but the TE was usually on the right side of the line. Strange to say the least. I was thinking that the ghoist of Dom Capers somehow landed in Andy Reid. I actually felt sorry for the guy he was getting embarrased in a major way, and Reid left him alone on an island.

Ya, I agree. I think we gave up on Morency too soon, but I guess he didn't fit Kubiak's one cut and go system.

Morency doesn't fit the "suit up and play" system that Kubiak wants. He's always banged up and ineffective or unavailable as a result... that's why the trade was made.

Looks like Mathis isn't fitting in that system either, is he going to get traded?

And Gado does? I kinda figured Gado fit the "suit up and let a backup FB take your spot at tailback" system.

I could not agree more, and I hate to say it, but Kubiak has been guilty a couple of times of getting his priorities out of order re. football talent/need vs. personal loyalies/friendships.
The indespensible member of the new Texans managerial regime IMO is Rick Smith. And if I'm Big Bob I'm already thinking about tieing him up for a long-time, financially speaking.

Gado is a joke...Cook out rushed him last week and the Texans have zero backs that can make anyone miss when Green goes down....When your RB's are Dayne and Cook and Gado doesn't even touch the ball...well, he's worthless.

I agree whole-haertedly. Unfortunately our last option is Darius Walker. He is not ready to be thrown to the wolves but I highly recommend that he be brought up from the practice squad to get a couple of reps a game. My faith in Green staying healthy has dwindled to nil and Dayne is not an every down back (if he is even an any down back). Walker needs some real game experience, let him make his mistakes and get ripped on the side line, but only allow a couple of carries a game to prevent his mistakes from being disastrous.

My $0.02

I thought Mike played pretty good yesterday, we need to get some RB's in the offseason though. If only Taylor didn't get hurt in training camp. I would have liked to have seen him this year.

I must have missed something yesterday. I thought Mike had a strong outing yesterday. He defended the pass well but run blocking doesn't seem to be his strong suit. Schaub was having to evade rushers from the left side but for the most part, the pocket stayed in tact.

i think a lot of us are thinking the same thing. this would've been a perfect opportunity for him to step in and make a spot for himself...i guess we'll see what he's got next year?
my concern is that instead of seeing what he can do this year developmentally speaking, any sort of draft decision would be based on what Chris Taylor can "potentially" do. I would have loved to have had a year of him as a backup (as opposed to last year as a practice squad guy for all but one game.

I expect next year's RBs to include AGreen, CTaylor, and a 3rd or 4th round pick. I think it's very unlikely that we spend huge amounts of money on Michael Turner. I also doubt spending our only premium draft pick (1st rounder) on a RB. I think the staff would be very happy with CTaylor and AGreen as the primary backs and maybe a smallish rookie with very good elusiveness (something like a Leon Washington, Lorenzo Booker type). Again, I think it's clear the coaching staff has a very high opinion of Chris Taylor and he'll be given the chance to win the job.
