On Matt Schaub returning to ACC country

(Full disclosure for my first post here: I'm a UVA alum and am thus incredibly biased when it comes to our new QB. I used to despise the ST. VINCE-acolytes who believed the Texans existed only to offer employment for ex-Longhorns. But now that I'm stoked because my guy is the local QB, that probably makes me a hypocrite. So be it.)

You all may already know this, but Schaub is 2-0 in Carolina's stadium, winning two bowl games there in college (over West Virginia and Pitt). So he'll at least be familiar with the building, if not the atmosphere. Though a ton of Mountaneers made the trip to the first game, so he's at least had a partially-hostile atmosphere in the building for one of those games. But not the other: evidently both Pitt fans had trouble finding rides and could not make the trip.

But more than that, Schaub was the Scourge of the Carolinas during his two years as the unquestioned starter for UVA. His junior year--when UVA was picked to finish ahead of only Duke--he swept all six Carolina teams (UNC, NCState, Duke, Wake, Clemson and South Carolina), one of the few QBs to ever do that. He was hurting (shoulder) his senior year yet still went 3-2 (missing South Carolina due to the injury) with his losses coming in a memorable 51-37 shootout against Philip Rivers and in overtime at Clemson against Rivers' current backup in San Diego.

So Matt's record in and against the Carolina's: a tidy 11-2 his last two years. I know, I know, it's not exactly the SEC East (well, aside from the Gamecocks), but still worth something.

As for his play last week, it was definitely the Schaub I remember from 2002-2003: quick reads and quicker throws. At UVA, he made a completely green OL (D'Brickashaw Ferguson was a 235 pound true freshman trying to play LT) look competent by getting the ball out of there when he had to. The knock on him was that he rarely went down the field with the ball--one Virginia paper called him the "Duke of Dink"--but he sure looked decisive on those mid-range throws and the bomb to Johnson against the Chiefs.

In any event, hope this was at least somewhat enlightening.
 
Nice perspective. I am sure his reputation will stick this weekend as the Texans go 2-0 for the year.

Nice ACC inside info post. And really spot on regarding the longhorn mantra.
 
I was at the UVA NCSU game when Phillip outlasted Schaub. It was a great football game. As for a triumphant return for Schaub I am going to have to respectfully disagree. I think while your team will be improved under the leadership and direction of Schaub it will be difficult for the Texans to come to Carolina and win on either side of the ball. We will beat you on offense and on defense. We are not the Chiefs and we are not the injury plagued Panthers of last season. We will establish the run with our Tandem and then expose your secondary down the field with Smith and Carter. I expect the Texans to be in the game in the second half but the Panthers will pull away by the end of the game. Here's to a entertaining game free of injuries for both teams.

But, btw, we're not the same old Texans, either. Don't think we're going to be bad because we didn't beat the Chiefs worse than we did. You're in for a tougher game than you think.

As has already been said above, these aren't the same old Texans, either. But I'll grant that we're not printing playoff tickets just because we beat the hapless Chiefs. And I'll further submit that you should not cancel those late January plans just because you beat up on Missouri's other sorry team.

I share your hope for an injury-free game. But more to the point on that: you guys better go to bed every night praying that Delhomme stays healthy. Because that OL you think so highly of won't look very good when Jake's under(lack of)study gets in there. Believe me when I tell you that . . .

What NFL team can say that they would not experiance a dropoff if there number one goes down. I for one was never in favor of signing Carr, I would have much preferred Harrington. But I'm just a fan rather than a GM.

I agree that the 07 Texans are an improved team over previous years. This simply stems from having a more poised quarterback at the helm. I hope you experiance a winning season as payment for remaining loyal to a previously dysfunctional franchise.

I simply don't believe that your team is improved enough to go on the road and beat a healthy Carolina squad. In my opinion all of the matchup's save a few favor the Panthers.

ie.
CAR Receivers vs. HOU Secondary-- Gotta give Smith and company the nod here.

HOU Receivers vs. CAR Secondary-- Johnson and receivers should be improved with the addition of Schaub but the Panthers ability to stop the run will allow us to minimize the amount of man opportunity's your receivers will face. Edge to the Carolina secondary.

Both teams Backs and OL vs Both Teams front seven-- Neither team will have a 150 yard plus day. Score this one a wash.

Car OL vs HOU Pass Rush-- I expect the Panthers to give up one sack. But overall the Carolina line will give Jake time to make decisions and long routes to develop.

HOU OL vs CAR Pass Rush-- Peppers and a CAR DT will both post a sack against the HOU OL. However outside of this the HOU OL will not be a disaster allowing Schaub to move the offense. Still have to give the Edge to CAR here.

HOU ST vs CAR ST
I will give the to HOU in the return game because CAR is relying on a rookie to return kicks and punts which is only appearing in his second NFL game.
However in the kicking game I give the edge to CAR because of Kasey's experiance.

Seriously, you really better pray that Carr doesn't get pressed into action. The guys has a ton of weaknesses, and every single one will be exposed by the team that knows him best... plus, you'll get bored as hell watching S Smith running 7 yard patterns.
On the plus side, anyone who has one of your RBs in a point per reception fantasy league would score a ton of points on all those dump offs...
 
Thankyou for emphasizing the fact that it would be advisable for me to pray that Carr is not forced into action. Unlike many Carolina fans I actually have seen a few Texans games. Seeing the Texans in my market equals having Sunday Ticket. I knew at the time that Carr was a bust and I am still aware of this fact. However anything was a step above Chris Weinke. LOL

No really, he came in a couple of games last year and made your current backup look like a rookie. Same line, same receivers, same plays, and he just schooled our previous QB.

It's not about popularity, because everyone is stoked about Schaub right now. We just recognize that our backup is pretty decent and we are not overly concerned if he has to come into a game. I know you guys cannot say the same thing right now (not dissin' anyone, just a reality).
 
Keep drinking the Kool-Aid. If your coaching staff thought the backup was so good they would not have bothered in signing Schaub. Just a thought. Could you possibly try and be somewhat objective. I know that is difficult for many FANatic's.

There was a lot of debate on here about the trade at the time... and really... all the way up to about the Dallas pre-season game. And that debate was on whether it was better to go with Sage and have 2nd round draft choices the next two years or have Matt and have no 2nd round draft choices the next couple of years.

If Matt keeps playing like he has in the preseason and in this first regular season game, then that debate will go away.

There were a lot of people who wanted Sage starting last year instead of Carr because Sage looked infinitely better than Carr in the preseason. Personally, I think if Sage hadn't broken his hand, he would have been starting our last few games.

Matt is much better than Sage. And Matt is much more consistent than Sage. Even with Sage instead of Matt, we're a better team this year than last year. With Matt, we're a MUCH better team this year than last year.

Dirty Cotton: I can name another team that did not experience a dropoff when it went to a backup QB: the 2003 Houston Texans when Tony Banks came in for David Carr. And beat the Panthers. In their Super Bowl season. Banks nearly beat the Patriots (remember them?) that year, too.

If Tony Banks is better than you, then it's time to find another line of work. Unfortunately, it took the team 40 months and a braintrust change to figure that out.

If your team is good enough to nearly beat both Super Bowl teams in the same season with Tony FREAKING Banks as your QB, imagine how good they'd be with a real one? Unfortunatlely, we are only now finding out.
 
Your right you did beat us that year congratulations. And as for NEARLY beating the Patriots we know all about that. NEARLY is NEARLY if it wasn't the Panthers would have a ring. But they don't. I sincerely hope Schaub is everything you think he is. Sure would be disappointing if he turned out to be another mediocre quarterback. Trouble is you might not have the players around him to make a run even if he is the real deal.

Considering the performance that we got from the QB position last year, even a mediocre QB would be such a dramatic improvement that it would be tough to tell he wasn't ready for the HOF. Remember, we won a game last year with -5 net yard's passing and the QB giving the other team a TD.

In all honesty, this year's Texans offense is the best ever assembled without doubt. Our QB position is the strongest it's ever been, our RB position is the best it's ever been along with being the deepest it's ever been, our WR positions are better than ever, and we finally have a good TE or 2 to throw out there. While the Oline is not the greatest, it could possibly be the best the Texans have had as well. But make no mistake, the Oline isn't as bad as people make it out to be.....you'll understand if Jake gets hurt.

The players are around Schaub and he's got more to work with than Carr ever had.....and definitely not an excuse as to why Carr sucked, he just did. Even the defense is up there with the best we've ever had, might just be the best we've had. The good news is both sides, along with our ST are improving as time goes on.

Good Luck on Sunday though......y'all better pray Jake stays healthy because if he goes down for the season, so do the Panthers.

How much faith do you have in players that have name recognition? Obviously Carolina has plenty.

ESPiN cites Carolina as a top 5 team constantly because of this. "With all the playmakers Peppers, Smith, Rucker, Morgan, Jenkins, blah blah blah, they have to make a serious run at the NFC Championship." Sean Salisbury is the dumbest one of the bunch. He is still on a Panther high stemming from the team in 2004. Seriously... Peppers and Smith are All-Pro players. You have two decent rb's and a manageable qb. The rest are under-achievers with names that everyone knows from college, being high draft picks, or from having one good year in the pros. Think about it, why pick up David Carr or a Chris Gamble. I am sure if Phillip Buchanon was an FA the Panthers would be taking a look at him.

The Panthers are not the team from 2004 and will not be that team in the near future. And it's really obvious now, since everyone ou there wants to give the reins to a qb that pulled the sled of perennial loser. We didn't do so great under his guidance did we?



Also, if you think that our teams are matched up pretty well... The kicker is the fact that we are in a real man's conference in the AFC. We have to compete with the Colts, Jags, and the Tacks. The Panthers are pretty much guaranteed a winning record in their division. Just do the math, the Texans will come into your house and win, on your field.

Really the only real loss we have had since 04 is Witherspoon at the LB position. Minter retired in the offseason, but he was a liability last season. Other than that I feel our line is much improved from 04.

Our coaches and front office are intelligent enough to know that some players are better as backups rather than starters. Hence Schaub starting and Rosenfels backing up. Sage has shown that he can produce in a pinch. He's also shown that he may not be starter material.

Prob a combination of both, really. Your never as good as you think you are, and your never as bad as you think you are.
