Texans Sign Butler

Strengths: Shows good footwork and a great first step. Is big with the frame to add bulk. Gets into position quickly. Takes good angles. Possesses quick feet, gets good leverage and locks on well. Stays disciplined; can adjust at the linebacker level to hit moving targets. Has decent range; is effective at pulling and trapping. Has the size to overpower linebackers. Sets quickly and sustains blocks. Has the quickness and mobility to drive off edge rushers. Changes directions well, adjusting to inside moves.

Weaknesses: Must add bulk and strengthen lower body to stick in the NFL. Struggles to overpower defensive linemen. Doesn't pack a good initial punch. Isn't strong enough in upper body to knock back defenders. Without getting bigger and stronger, will struggle to hold ground against pro bull rushers. Past ankle injury raises minor durability concerns.

Bottom line: Butler gained good experience as a starter during his junior and senior seasons at Miami. His explosiveness and discipline make him an appealing prospect, despite the fact he needs weight-room work. He is worthy of a seventh-round pick.

Dan Pompei analysis
Is a thin, long-armed blocker who would fit best in a zone-blocking scheme, like the Broncos’. Is athletic with good footwork. Can matchup with speed rushers. Must improve bulk and strength. Gets defeated at the point of attack. With continued development in the weight room and continued improvement on the field, could become an outstanding pro.
 
Since his draft profiles in 2006, he shrunk and bulked up............from 6'5" and 287 lbs to 6'4" and 293 lbs.......that's why we snatched him up.:shades:
 
He was drafted in the third round last year by the Panthers, #89 overall from Miami. He isn't on the NFL players, so can't get any info on how many games he played last year.

Rashad Butler has been a valuable member of the Hurricane offensive line during his career. He has started in parts of three seasons at right tackle, but was also Eric Winston's replacement at left tackle when Winston tore his ACL in 2004.

Butler has a lot of upside at the next level. He is an excellent athlete, and shows impressive agility for a man his size. He is quick and agile in pass protection and does a very good job at mirroring defenders. Butler has a nice frame at 6'5 293, and has a lot of room for growth potential. He is very versatile, having spent extensive time at both tackle positions.

Strength and bulk are two things Butler is going to have to improve upon to play at the next level. He has excellent height and athleticism for tackle, but his lack of bulk is a major problem. Butler can be pushed around in the running game because he is not strong enough to drive defenders off the ball. He's also vulnerable to the bull rush off the snap in pass protection.

Despite his experience, Butler has work to do in order to play at the next level. He must get stronger if he wants to last in the NFL. His athleticism is very impressive for an offensive lineman, but he is not strong enough to hold up on a consistent basis. If he can show the ability to add weight and maintain his agility, Butler has big time upside in the NFL.

He went to the same school as Eric Winston at Miami. He played mostly RT there, but replaced Winston at LT when he was injured, so he has experienced at both sides. Sounds like a good athlete, needs to get stronger though.
 
just a bit confused here, so does this mean we have to cut some guys to add him to the roster or does he go on practice squad? just a dummy asking a stupid question.

Sounds like a good move since we have a bad history with Olinemen and staying off the injury list. Any Olinemen that can step up and play multiple positions is good.
 
Classic zone, finesse type OT but that is certainly consistant with our present
set of tackle starters, Salaam & Winston.
This guy has flopped badly in the league so far, but you never know, maybe with him his third NFL chance here in Houston will be the proverbial charm.

I keep seeing that he flopped, or that he is a bust. Wasn't he a rookie last year? Didn't he spend all of last year on IR or something for a staph infection?

Seems to me that he really hasn't had much opportunity to become a stud or a bust.

I'm relatively sure that he has to stay on the active roster all season. The same goes for any players that are signed from another team's practice squad.

That would be true. A player can reject the offer and stay on their team's practice squad. If he accepts the offer to leave the practice squad, I think his original team can counter bid.

No. First off, he never signed with their practice squad--he was waived and claimed by the Texans. He would have had to clear waivers and then be signed to their practice squad. Second, a player who is on a practice squad can be signed by any team and then has to spend three games on the active roster. They can then be waived and the process starts again.

Dude was waived. There is a priority system for claiming off waivers. If a player clears waivers he can then be signed to any practice squad or regular roster. The original team has zero rights other than making an offer of their own.

you are right. players arent given too many chances these days.
 
It's interesting that they consider this guy a prospect for playing LT AND this guy backed up Winston. Winston and Andre knew him and apparently vouched for him to Smith.

I think he was the starting RT, while Winston was the starting LT. IIRC, Butler only moved over to start at LT when Winston got hurt.
 
Long as he has more upside then Frye did. I just feel we're at this cross roads where this year more then likely we'll have to start grooming sOMONEONE to take over at LT unless we see definative progress from Spencer being able to comeback at 100% next year. The end of the PUP list will be a real big indicator of what we can expect.

As for Butler I'm just wondering if this guy is legit in their eyes or another project. It sure does help the fact he's at least played both T positions and has had prior interaction with at least two players who can vouch for his ability and work habits.

I think it comes down to Jackson being an RT and Butler having more upside potential on the left side.

I was surprised to see Jackson go, though. He has played well.
 
he fits the zone blocking scheme because of his athletic ability, in the NFL more @ the LG position. he could be solid back-up material, younger/cheaper than McKinney, but I don't see him as the franchise LT in the Texans future, has no power or hand punch, should not impact Charles Spencer at all :shades:
 
Even though this guy has failed so far (been with 2 teams since being drafted
just last year, both have cut him), Rick Smith clearly sees real potential.
And he got a couple personal references from no less of sources than Texans starters. If you get a chance check out the interview with the GM on the Texans main site, you might want to do that.
But Smith said that both AJ and Winston, both Miami Xs where Butler played his college ball, personally vouched for him and said he was a hard worker and
recommended him. Smith also said that Butler had 36" arm-length. Very impressive. And he specifically mentioned that this guy is a "left-tackle" prospect, a premium position as he said. I like the move.
 
The genius behind bringing in numerous LT's with potentially significant unrealized upside that don't break the bank, is that even if they don't quite work out at LT, they many times make very serviceable RT's or even guards.
