Some Tough Choices For Kubiak Ahead

TK_Gamer

I don't know about you guys, but I would hate to have Kubiaks job deciding who to cut this year. We have ALOT of competition at numerous positions.

Wide reciever seems the toughest so far. We haven't really seen anything from Mccardell and Bethel Johnson. I think we got 4 solid guys with AJ, Walter, Jacoby, Andra Davis. Jerome Mathis makes it 5 and David Anderson would make it 6. So I guess it's Mccardell and Bethel fighting to live?

Linebacker has some tuff battles too

I think Stanely is gone

What's your thoughts so far on the big cuts comming up?

I think we have 3 sure bets at wide receiver:

AJ
Walter
Jacoby Jones

Andre Davis, Jerome Mathis, Keenan McCardell, David Anderson, and Bethel Johnson fighting for a spot. I think Mathis and Davis have the heads up there, but it may still be up for grabs. McCardell has been disappointing as has Bethel Johnson.

The 3rd running back position is up for grabs too. Gado and Lundy are fighting for that job.

But most importantly....bye, bye Chad Stanley

Mathis is a sure bet as well. The question remains how many other WR's will the Texans keep and who will they be?

Everyone keeps leaving Charlie Adams out of the competition for WR. Has been mentioned several times in the camp reports, plus maybe several good catches during the games. But like everyone else says it is going to be a tough decision.

Also heard they have a big decision on Frye as well, they want him on practice squad but don't think he will clear waivers.

Good point about Adams - he had nice catch last week for a TD. It is gonna be tough but hey I'd rather have this way than for us to be scratching around.

My top 5 WRs are AJ, Walters, JJ, A.Davis, & Mathis but after that I dunno who's next. Do we keep 6 or 7 WRs ?
I think Gado should be our top backup to AG, so my top 3 is easy: AG, Gado,
& Dayne.
What about FB ? Cook dropped another ball last night. Even though he's experienced I think I'd keep Abbate over him even though he's so inexperienced. Could Pass be the #2 ?
Pickin the 6 LBs will also be real tough.
Thursdays game in TB is huge for a lot of players trying to make the roster and the coachs last chance to get a look-see for the 75 to 53 reduction.

This is why I started the "How many roster spots..." thread last week.

We're going to be losing some really good players next week. This is going to be really rough.

Andre played well ast night but it's the first full game i really got to see myself. I think he makes the squad though along with Mathis. IMO it's a battle for the last spot between everyoneelse.

LB will be interesting. I'd like to see Clark win the starter spot myself.

Do agree though Frye will probably be one of the toughest choices. Lots of upside and athleticism ; i know it's a later pick but i'd hate to see a draft pick go down the drain. I also don't think he'll clear waivers myself and i think we'd be better served keeping him

Know this might open some wounds here but any word lately on Spencer's rehab?

Well Adams didn't make the cut, nor Williams who I rated.

We are cutting some decent players.

I'd go into the season with six WR's....

AJ, JJ, KW, AD, JM, DA.....

McCardell and Bethel would be toast....

Yes and it was a damned good thread, which I bumped once I beleive.

David Anderson made a great catch last night. Might just be a case of too many guys for too few spots. That 1 is going to cut me to the bone. Eight guys going for four spots, somebody gotta go. Next twelve is going to realy hurt.

Very true, the next cuts we'll be getting rid of some decent players. However, it is a good sign and does speak well about our team's talent when the cuts are incredibly hard to make.

Only 1 more cut to be made before the the last preseason game.

Who will it be???

My guess is.... I actually have no idea, I was looking at the roster and there are no obvious candidates.

If I had to go on a limb I will say DE Victor DeGrate.

Players waived Sunday were quarterbacks Quinton Porter and Bradlee Van Pelt; receivers Charlie Adams and Harry Williams; defensive tackles Thomas Johnson and Thomas Smith; tight end Ben Steele and cornerback Derrick Roberson.
I'm happy .... Badly Van Puke is gone . Little surprised they cut Steele.

Probably Spencer to PUP. The previously referenced article shows that the spin machine may have indicated it is time for the team to 'fess up about his status. The team looks good, the offense clicked --> release the Spencer news.

“Charles has made a lot of progress, but it’s a reach to say he’s going to be able to play this season,” Kubiak said. “Will he play again? Yes, he will. There’s no doubt about that. Charles will be back, but I just don’t know if it’ll be this season.”
I contend they've known this for quite some time, certainly pre-draft.

I've been trying to get everyone prepared for this since last year, due to the nature of the injury..........I've become more primed than ever about the dissociation of truth and reality that spews from the front office when it comes to injuries. Look for the worst.........hope for the best........and the best is that Spencer may be a productive member of the Texans in 2008.

Kubiak does not decide who will be a Texan, Rick Smith does. He has total control. Depending on the GM some take into consideration what the HC thinks, but most don't. Most GM's want to keep the players they drafted or signed, their egos are too big to admit they made a mistake.

You know, I'm starting to wonder about something.

All summer we hear that they're going to keep Mario on the right. First two preseason games, they keep Mario on the right. Then out of the blue, they switch him around to the left which is his more natural position (as xtru has pointed out over and over and over ad nauseum). They've been trying both Shantee and Charlie at right end the past couple of games.

I'm wondering if Anthony Weaver gets PUP'd and they're starting to look at shifting guys around to deal with that. Mario mainly on the left, Babin/Shantee/Charlie mainly on the right. Several guys have speculated about that restructuring of the line.

And the chance that he will be the starting LT may be over, too. LT is a difficult position to learn and requires a certain amount of physical fitness. Sitting 2+ years on the sidelines doesn't help.

I understand he has worked hard, and it has to be maddening to him to not be able to be on the field, so I want to add a name comparison to this: Bennie Joppru. Lot of potential. High round pick. Plagued by injuries when he was here.

If we plan on keeping 6 wide recievers and 7 linebackers, expect Pittman to be looking for a job. I actually don't think he has a chance of making the roster this season.

At Fullback : Cut Cook...for some reason I don't think we will but I hope we do. Mr Stonehands needs to go. I like Vonta and Abbate

At RB: Green, Dayne, then Lundy...I like Gado, but he's getting old. I'm sure we won't cut them though due to his Green Bay ties, but one can always hope. Lundy is younger, and I think after a year or so of being mentored by Ahman Green he will turn into something good.

WR: Mathis a sure thing??? I don't see it. He's an incredible punt returner, but he's dropped some balls, and his latest returning attempts have been weak..I think Jacoby has him worried, and I think he should be.

LB: that's going to be tough....real tough. Good luck coach!

Gado is 25 years old. If that's old then Green should be using a walker by now.

Lundy is not a good RB. Eventually he might turn out, but doubtful. Gado will be the #3. Lundy might not even make the team.

IMO, we don't really have a solid #2 either, but that's another topic.:)

Mathis returns kickoffs, not punts, and he has been doing so almost exclusively since the 2nd preseason game, without much competition. Jacoby is obviously ahead of him, but I think he has a good chance of sticking around.

Or are we keeping 4 TE's too with Dressen snapping?

I am not saying he has no say, what I am saying is that Rick Smith has complete control. Kubiak may really want to keep a player, but Smith is the one that decides whether that player stays or goes. Each team is different as to how much weight is given to the coaches value of the player. If Smith decides he doesn't like the player he will override Kubiak.

He mentioned it...coach speak, today on his 610 show. He's done everything but say it's a lock he will not be back. They don't have to make a desidsion on him untill Mid October. When the PUP switches to IR....that'll be the end of it for '07. I think, but do not know, that is what the coach speak is getting at. I'm reading it at 20-80 at this point that he will be back. But that's just a guess by me reading the tea leaves and the coach speak.

"The outta da blue" was Smith moving Mario away from the TE to let Mario get a better situation. You may be correct about Weaver, I'm thinking they are shopping Orr. I think you and Xt are giving up on Mario way to early.

I had hopes he would at least make it back after the PUP list turns to IR. I'm not so sure now like you said he'll even make it back until next year. I'm really wondering if that even is a best case scenario. My bigger question then is long term solution at LT. Is Spencer realistically an option there now?

If this is the way that it turns out and lets say that Babin really comes into his own this could be a real blessing. I lean towards xtru's agle of Mario natural position being strong side. I couldn't possible be more on the fence about Wiliams. Watching him, what looks to me.. (mind you, i'm not a defensive line coach, i'm a recording engineer) like stumbling around out there. He seems to take way too deep of an angle to the QB.Then when he had a chance to make a play deep in the back field he didn't seem to have the ability to use his body to make the tackle. He just seems kind of awkward to me. Like a big kid that has more body than motor skills.

But suppose that it works out in our favor that Weaver is hurt and we get Babin and Williams on the field and that works... again, this is assuming that Babin comes completely into his own.

For the record, I like Weaver at SDE as well. but there isn't room for three DE's.

GMs don't really decide who makes the cuts, coaches do. GMs just evaluate and find talent..........coaches pick who plays.

If it was all up to the GM who made the final roster, you might as well hand him the damn clipboard, because that would take away all the coach's power to keep and plug players he feels fit his system.

I kinda dissagree with you on this. If they were prety sure that the injury was as severe as you suggest, their option would be to cut the guy out right and offer him an inury settlement. I gotta believe with Kubes gaurded optimism, that he believes there is a fair shot that he makes it back.

As runner's post with the quote suggests, they are not going to settle him out. We'll know for sure by tommorow or by next wensday at the latest. If they carry him on the pup, that indicates they are waiting for the twnety percent chance to kick in in October, wth the chance to have him on line by Mid November. If they IR him next week....he's not coming back this year.

Coach speak, the inury has not healed to the effect that Spencer can go to war on it this season. However, he is still a high end tallent and we're going to carry him this year on PUP/IR. We'll lock and load him for next years OTAs. He will compete for OLT next season.

If they settle him out next week ,then you're correct. But Kubiak has said or hinted at nothing along those lines just yet.

Well, I think the question becomes for the coaching staff, "what is gained by bringing Spencer onto the field in midseason versus what is risked... and, who would be cut from the team at that point or placed on the IR to make room for him." Kubiak has said clearly that his knee is sound and he "will" be back. But, even healthy at midseason, what kind of asset will he be having only played one game almost two years ago and having no live action going back to that point.

I'd love to see him back too, but I can wait until next preseason. Especially if there's a trip to the playoffs in the interim!

You can't generalize one way or the other. The owner of each team decides the structure. Some GM's are much more powerful and have the final say on personnel--hence you see conflict sometimes between the GM and head coach. Others GM's largely scout and recommend but the HC gets a heavy say. Right now, supposedly Kubiak has a strong say.
