Scat back for 2008?

Is there a need for a extremely quick RB in Texans offense? We have power back in Green & Dayne and Ahmad is suppose to have some speed. Often in later rounds, there are several RB that can't be a starter necessarily or even get many carries for a full season, yet could be good to go for 5+ carries a game as an alternative to the Dayne and Green type backs. We do not seem to have this type player with true after burners.

Yeah, that was my hope also. If it appears he will be healthy do we go with him? Or use a 5th, 6th or 7th pick or maybe go with UFA? I would like to see this type of back used in draw plays. When was the last time we saw Texans use that play. Could Gado be used in such a situation?

Ah, Football!
If we want speed, go with Slaton in the draft. Dude is quick.
Well let's hope we aren't in the position to draft him. I think he'll be a top ten pick for sure.

And..you're right, he's a good one for sure. I watched him alot last year. They should have a great season this year.

I do not want to give up a high pick in 08 unless Green is out of picture. We need (as of today) a free safety and LT. That takes care of 1st and third picks in which ever order. Again based on right now Jacoby looks good at #2 WR and Kubes is still high on Walter. I can see us drafting a center in 4th or 5th. I am looking at Reggie Bush speed in 5th or lower and for only a few plays a game.

It would probably be better if we reserved what we need until after the season. You never know who will step up and get the job done, regardless of how obvious it looks right now. Players come out of nowhere every year.

It's too early to determine what running backs will go where in next years draft, but I'd like to see Allan Patrick in a Texans uniform. He played well when Adrian Peterson got hurt at Oklahoma. Of course if Patrick (who's a senior) has a good year at OU then he might not be an option.

Ok you wait. Some of want to talk about what ifs and maybes, at least until real football begins.:whip: It is just for fun. Smiley face goes here.

There's some kid playing for Arkansas that's pretty good. He'd probably make an all right scat back.

its true in NCAA players can have a break out season at any time

I'm interested to see if Darius Walker can fill that type of role. I think he could fill the scat back-type role well, but it remains to be seen if he can do it at the NFL level. If he can return kicks and punts, he could turn into a Dave Meggett/Eric Metcalf-type back. Kind oflike RB, but more cost-effective ;)

I'm not sure what your reasoning is, Xtru, but I have heard others say Walker is not a scat back, simply because of his size (210ish). But, he is quicker than he is fast, he's pretty elusive, and he catches the ball well out of the backfield. He can dish out a little punishment now and then, but for the most part, that's not his game. I think he could be a scat back-type player in the NFL, if he makes it at all. We'll see.

agreed...to me a so-called "scatback" is a guy more like Reggie Bush or Dave Meggett. Walker is just a smallish 3rd down back (if he even makes a roster in the NFL) in the mold of Mewelde Moore or Dom Davis

Yeah, I agree with that. Walker reminds me a lo of what they initially wanted DD to be. Your definition of scat back, though, hasn't really been prevalent in the NFL for a while. The NFL refuses to recognize RB as a scat back, even though he's the closest thing, IMO. I can't think of any others in the NFL. Trends go round and round, though, so who knows?

Yeah, I picture Walker as a 3rd-down type back that catches screens and outlets, carries a few, and maybe gets a few draw plays. That is the closest to a "scat back" that the NFL employs these days, I think. I could be missing someone, though.

Garret Wolf for the Bears is a scat back...

Jerious Norwood is a scat back....

Those are guys who I'd want to throw screens to....

I know a lot of guys here like Walker, but I just don't think he's anything special...

He's defnitely not someone I expect to make a contribution to an NFL team any time soon...but hey...who knows....

Agree with your assesment there. There's a difference between quick and fast when comparing backs. IMO we're more seeing a trend again for two back systems and i think it helps keep fresh legs going into games.

I think the ESPN mentallity of we NEED a gamebreaking ubberfast player at one of the offensive skill positions is watering down the X'x and O's of the basic need of a guy like Ahman(just using him as an example). He is someone who has the all around game, knows cutting lanes, knows when to bounce a run inside or out, can help pick of the blitz, can work in space, knows when the QB is in trouble to come back to the ball, finds seams in zones, etc etc.

Having that super, ubberfast skill player does help stretch defenses but it's good for a few plays. Tim Carter formerly for the Giants is a guy that reminds me of that. When he was in had the speed to stretch teams but he didn't regularly catch the ball so teams didn't have to really account for his speed and now he's in Cleveland.

I want smart football players on the field and if they have the 4.34 speed well..that's icing on the cake.

I went to school with Ryan Moats, the third string RB for Philadelphia. He's had problems getting on the field for several reasons including injuries (the biggest ? with him), being stuck behind Westbrook (no shame in that), and Andy Reid's general inability to commit to the running game. He's not the fastest guy as far as flat out top speed goes, but he's very quick and makes sharp decisive cuts and runs with very good vision. Very elusive style runner.

Moats was injured this last weekend against the Ravens and will likely miss the entire 2007 season with a fractured left ankle. I'm thinking (actually hoping) that the Eagles will let him go so he can try his luck elsewhere as I think he has the ability to get on the field much moreso than he has in Philly. When Westbrook was injured in 2005, Moats started two games and went over 100 yds in both games, making some very nice long runs.

Like I said, the biggest question is whether he came come back and stay healthy, but I think he would do very well in a system like the Texans' that tends to rely on several guys to fill specific roles and not one guy to do everything. I don't necessarily think he will ever be a feature back anywhere because of his durability (we wore him out in his three years at LaTech - over 30 carries a game often), but in a complimentary role I think he could do some real damage.

Just a thought.

Norwood is a legit every down back and I wouldn't characterize him as a player who only has outside speed....I've been watching him since his days at Miss St. He is about 5'11" and 215ish and can run inside the tackles. Wolfe is about 180 lbs soaking wet

Maybe we just have different definitions on what a scat back is...

I agree that Norwood can do it all...I love the guys game...

But I still consider him a scat back...He's on the smaller side and speed and quickness are a huge part of his game...

I consider Westbrook a scat back too...

hey everyone here is a crazy idea but how about we see how this year goes before we say we need a new rb
We saw it last year. Besides Green we have the same backfield as last year (and Walker, if he can make the team).

We need more backs. Stock em up Gary!

From a numbers perspective, yes, we have enough people on the team who have the position of running back, halfback, tailback, or whatever you want to call the guy.

However, if you can get more competition in there, and get better quality players than you have right now, you can NEVER have enough guys.

What do you think they're going to do with Gado? I think Gado will make the team, personally, if only because he has that connection with coach Sherman.

Norwood is on mthe smaller side?? Most full-time RBs in the NFL are under 6' and go between about 210-220 lbs. Norwood is at the upper end of that range.

Norwood is pretty close to 6' tall too...I saw him up close in College...he isn't a small back at all. If you want your back 240 he may be....but he is pretty much a prototype back for the most part. He was pretty thin in College...that's where he gets his size rap...but he isn't a college kid anymore.

Norwood-5'11 204
Leon Washington-5'8 202
Wille Parker- 5'11 209
Tatum Bell--5'11 213
Cadillac Williams 5'11 217
Portis- 5'11 223
Michael Turner- 5'11 237
Ronnie Brown-- 6'0 232

These are all backs whom I consider to be of good size to medium to medium small...

Norwood is smaller than all of them...

The guy is 5 pounds away from being back in the 100's...

Yes, I consider him to be on the smaller end of the spectrum....

Hmm...I see a pattern developing here.

Green is a short-term answer. Taylor will be coming off an injury. The rest are limited in what they can do. All signs point to needing to draft a RB next year. But if a lot of the juniors come out, we might be able to still get a good one in the third round.

If we do go RB in the first rd. My vote goes to Ray Rice. I think this guy will be the Maurice Jones Drew of the 08 draft. He's small but he's stocky like MJD and he has great speed.

dont get me wrong i love gado as well, i mean i love these young rb's we have i would not mind if gado or lundy played alot i dont care which one! out of the two which one has a better chance to play more here?

Michael Turner- 5'11 237 UFA after this season and will command (most likely) big money.

Phil Kessel: Nice Guy. Tries Hard.
I think the guy from Arkansas people are talking about is Felix Jones. He is an all around back, but very quick. I would take him if Slaton is not there. We should pickup a good runningback this year because Green is old, and this years draft is loaded at the runningback position. I mean McFadden, Jones, Hart, Slaton and Rice could all go in the top 20. And I think I am forgetting a few.

I like Turner. I was glad the titans didn't get him.But how old is he? 25, 26. If we we were going to get him I wish it would have been this year. But it would have been to expensive for us.

We need a burner with a good body, not really a scat back. A Portis clone is what we need.

Green is short term, and the rest of the RBs are terrible. A few good games last year doesn't make Dayne quit being the fat ass bust he's been his whole career.

I think the days of the "One cut, down field" system making crappy backs good are over. It didn't work in Denver last year, which is why they spent a ton of money on Henry, and why they were looking to get Peterson or Lynch.

Denver was 8th in the NFL in rushing last year. That hardly is poor performance. Factor in the introduction of a rookie QB meaning teams could play for the run more and the fact remains Denver can flat out run the ball.

Also our RB's are not terrible. They may not be stellar but they are decent NFL backups at worst, apart from Green who has proven himself a good player, who we will have to wait and see if he has the gas left in his tank to play to that level.

BTW Portis was the 42nd best rusher in the NFL last year. Behind Dayne and just ahead of Lundy.

None of them are starter material.

Portis is a beast dude. A guy can't exactly rack up yards when he destroys his shoulder in preseason. We need a guy with that kind of speed.

Factor in the complete ineptitude of their starter for at least half the season, losing their offensive coordinator and the insertion of a rookie quarterback, and you have offensive struggles.
