Ben Steele feared his football career had crumbled like the bone in his leg and the tendons in his ankle.

Only five days into training camp last season, the former Mesa State College star’s bid to make an impact with the Houston Texans ended when a pile of players rolled up on his leg during an intrasquad scrimmage on Aug. 1, 2006.

After playing in 17 games over parts of two seasons before being released by the Green Bay Packers, Steele figured his career stat line for the NFL would end with a modest 4 receptions for 42 yards.

“I wasn’t sure if that was my last play or not,” Steele said.

“It was scary because of all the tendon damage in my ankle. They told me it was a very serious injury right away.”

The Texans were equally disappointed to see Steele’s season come to a close so quickly.

“He would have made a good push on this football team as a fullback, tight-end type player,” Texans head coach Gary Kubiak said of placing Steele on the injured reserve list.

“It was very unfortunate because he’s a great kid.”

Even Steele didn’t expect the long road back that was in front of him.

He went to a special training center in San Francisco to rehabilitate the leg with his friend, New Orleans Saints tight end Eric Johnson.

Steele, who helped Palisade High School win a pair of state championships his junior and senior seasons, said there were several ups and downs in the process of regaining strength in the leg, making it hard to keep a positive attitude.

“It’s hard to point fingers and single out one guy (Carr). But there definitely is a new attitude around here.

“Matt Schaub stepped in, taking over the reins of the team right away. He was taking the lead vocally in camps. He’s a class guy and you can see in his throws that he is definitely a playmaker.”

“The offense hasn’t changed much,” said Steele, who did not record a catch in the Texans’ preseason opener Saturday.

“We’ve got that Denver offense with a lot of play-action and bootleg stuff, making plays on the run. We can do a lot of things now that we couldn’t do with Carr. Schaub can drop back and is also good on the move.”

It was a very nice hit. They showed it a couple times in a row on the jumbo screen. I never got tired of seeing it.....(giggles with glee at the thought of it)
