Glenn Earl injured

This might not be a necessarily horrendous thing. Guess who's probably going to slide over to SS now.......

The guy everybody wanted to be SS. CC Brown.

The Texans are now forced to find a more ball hawking FS, because thats basically the only types they have on the roster.

Unless they plan to leave CC at FS and try Harrison or Simmons at SS. I personally would like to see CC move over and get a real FS, because CC bites on way to many PA passes, he even did that tonight, but the guy has great range for a SS.

My thoughts as well.

I'd like to see CC Brown move to SS and try Von Hutchins at FS. He made some nice plays today including one interception.

Could be a blessing in disguise. I like how Earl has performed during camp but Hutchins has played well in TC and obviously tonight with the pick so he or Harrison could emerge...it will be interesting.

Sorry about Earl's injury but pretty excited about a possible move of C.C. Brown to SS (where he belongs) and Von Hutchins and Harrison battling it out for the starting FS position.

Earl hits hard though...really hard.

So does CC, which is the reason why everybody including the Texans know they have two SS's out on the field. CC has caused more FFs than Earl while playing the FS spot...... CC Brown is a firecracker that is exposed at FS.

hate to say it but I don't think we lose much....Benson trucked Earl early....Benson sure looked good. I think we lose nothing with CC starting at SS. We just need to solidify the FS.

I could see a three man rotation at safety, with Simmons at SS on run downs, with Brown moving to SS on passing downs and Hutchins coming in at FS. Maybe Harrison works into the mix at some point in the season.

Without Earl, the Texans are more vulnerable versus the run. The Texans face a lot of good running teams this season. Losing Earl could become an issue if Simmons can't hold up.

No we aren't...He got his neck ran through by Benson...

I don't know where this thought comes from but Earl isn't that good....

C.C. is a much better SS than him...

Earl is a sell out ball player, but he's not that quick, not overly athletic....

If C.C gets a chance to play SS we will see a noticeable difference in run support at that position....

Even playing FS last year he had more tackles than Earl...When C.C was a rookie he played really well for us at the SS position...He even led the team in tackles for a good portion of the season...

I agree. ;)

You know when you're a good talent evaluator, when you can judge a player's ability off of a single play.

Its going to be hard rotating people in and out if someone goes "No Huddle" on us.

You said you wanted C.C. as SS a couple of weeks ago, King.

Let's hope you're right.

I'm gonna call up Smith and see if he has a spot on the scout team for you. lol

If the Texans are relying on the SS to be the "run stopper" on this team, the Texans are in deep doo doo.

The drop off in "run stopping" ability between Glenn and Earl is not that great (Earl is just 10 pounds heavier), while the athletic ability to be involed on more tackles in the running game is a big step up with Brown.

According to rotoworld.com the Texans have placed Earl on IR. It also says that Horton, the CB who broke his arm, is on IR as well.

C.C. has a better nose for the ball than Glen also...

1 ? Nah....

Give me a good 3-5 plays and I can pick 'em apart...

:d:

I don't think it's ever a blessing when one of our boys gets injured, and out for the year.

Did you guys see that lick Smmons put on the Bears RB, he hit him pretty hard. Probably would have taken his head off if he hadn't ducked at the last minute.

You know Earl had the play of the year last season. It's the only replay I see consistently, which would be his absolutely awesome hit on Jeremy Shockey.

We had 3 players injured that game...remember that post a while back where someone said something like "I hope we get out of preseason without any injuries."

Did everyone perform the ritual afterwards? :bat:

Well we have a badass MLB now thanks to someone going down in TC last year, I'll say that was a blessing..............

no way Cowart was going to win the battle at mlb...I don't even think he was in the league last year after we cut him.

If you remember though, DeMeco was projected to be a OLB and after that injury is when the Texans moved him over and were blown away with how fast he picked up the position.

It is kind of weird when you lose a established starter for the season and there is a positive reaction to it.

I too hope that whatever change we made improves the pass coverage in the secondary, however whoever starts at FS or SS next to Brown will be a big step down in experience and that could mean more mistakes and big plays given up down the road.

projected by pundits and fans...I think the Texans were going to look at him at all the lb positions regardless. I have a hard time thinking that they honestly considered Cowart anything but a short yardage run stopper....I'm kinda shocked they even took him to camp and posted some comments back when we signed him.

During the presser, Kubiak said that he and Smith had a list of prospects both at CB and S. I can't think of anyone worth having -that we can afford- who's still available.

Who do you guys think they could be looking at?

Cowart never got injured. Wali Rainer got injured early in camp last season and that is when the Texans put DeMeco at MLB fulltime.

Here is a crazy idea, but hey, Pre-Season is where you try crazy things and it doesn't kill you.

Try Brad Van Pelt at safety, see how he does. He isn't making the team at QB. Its nothing lost.

He's 6'2", 220 or so. And at Colorado State, he rushed often. And the nasty little incident in the CSU-CU game shows he has the nasty temper necessary to play safety. GK likes the kid too, and isn't going to cut him anytime soon even though he stunk Saturday.

I like it. How fast is he though?

I don't know about the afford angle. Seems to me that anyone without a job at this point can't be too choosy. Here's a list from scout.com of the "best" available defensive free agents. I'll quote the safeties below:

Safety
Sammy Knight/UFA
Shaun Williams/UFA
Terrence Kiel/UFA
Robert Griffith/UFA
Troy Vincent/UFA
Tony Parrish/UFA
Lance Schulters/UFA
Derrick Gibson/UFA
John Howell/UFA
Anthony Mitchell/UFA
Marcus Coleman/UFA
Willie Offord/UFA
Joseph Jefferson/UFA
Ernest Shazor/UFA
Keion Carpenter/UFA
Ronnie Heard/UFA
Earl Little/UFA
Jerry Wilson/UFA
Ifeanyi Ohalete/UFA
Bracy Walker/UFA
Antuan Edwards/UFA
Mike Logan/UFA
Andre Lott/UFA
Tebucky Jones/UFA
Matt Bowen/UFA
Dwaine Carpenter/UFA
Guss Scott/UFA
Jack Brewer/UFA
Terrence Kiel just received 3 years probation for shipping codeine cough syrup. Other than that, he wouldn't be a bad pickup. Antuan Edwards played for Mike Sherman, but was out of the league in 2006. Tony Parrish didn't show much with the cowgirls last year. Sammy Knight might have something left. Maybe Shaun Williams does. Pretty lean group, which is to be expected.

IIRC, Van Pelt originally went to Michigan State and they did convert him to DB. Of course, he thought he was a QB, so he transferred.

The "Rap Sheet" on Kiel:

In 2003 Kiel was shot 3 times after an attempted carjacking in Houston.

On September 26, 2006 Kiel was arrested for multiple drug charges including: possession, possession with the intent to sell, and transportation of a controlled substance. Police came to the Chargers practice facility and arrested him. He was released after posting a $1,550,000 bond.

On February 7, 2007 he pleaded guilty to felony and misdemeanor drug charges for shipping codeine-based cough syrup to Texas. He is ordered to do 10,000 hours of volunteer work, including talking to young people about dangers of drugs and undergo counseling for urinating in public.

With 10,000 hours Community Service to do, I think his Sundays are pretty full...

Jeez... that's darn near 5 full years if he was just turning in 40-hour weeks of volunteer work. Note to self: Don't mail cough syrup.

Kubiak was asked on today's 610 radio show who they were looking at. I think one of the radio hosts mentioned ex-Panther, Shaun Williams but I don't think Kubiak would confirm or deny that name or any others. All he would say was that they didn't just want a "warm body" but someone who had a legit shot at making the team.

I like this mode of operation. Every move, no matter how small should upgrade the team. I like it.
