Keyshawn Johnson will announce his retirement today, ending an NFL career in which the outspoken receiver was once one of the game's biggest threats.

He will join ESPN as a sportscaster and disclose his plans at a news conference in Los Angeles at USC, where he starred in college, two people familiar with Johnson's decision told the Associated Press. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the Johnson had yet to make the announcement.

ESPN.com first reported his retirement
.

Guess he isn't going to help the Titans.

ha!

Good for him, now he can take the role of "Loud Mouth Receiver" on ESPN in place of Michael Ervin. :)

The guy gets offered $7~8 million and he passes to be on ESPN? ESPN would have been there in two seasons, his heart is only for the money not the game.

I dont follow that logic... He turned down 7 to 8 million to retire, but its about the money??

Maybe he figured since the only team interested him was Tennessee, reality set in and it became painfully obvious that it was over and time to retire...

Read the article. He turned down the 7~8 million to take a higher paying job at ESPN.

So his choices were hey I can play another 2 season in the NFL or I can be some joke on ESPN. He went for the money.

I partially agree. I think he was wanting to be picked up by a team that could make a run at the Bowl. Seeing that the titans were one of the only teams interested, he elected to retire. We all know the chances of the titans going to the Bowl anytime soon are far less than ours.:texflag:

i agree TB, maybe he was just tired, & wanted to retire in 1 piece, or really enjoys doing the commentating thing.

.................... & now it's time to go to the titans boards LOL about posts like "we didn't need/want him anyway" knowing just last week they were saying "Keyshawn could really be a great addition..."

The article doesn't say anything about 7-8 mil, in fact it says no offer was made and they were discussing ranges. Keyshawn mentioned $2.5 mil as what teams needed to be considering--doubt he would turn down $4 mil.

Here is the article I was talking about from the Tennessean:

WR Keyshawn Johnson turned down an offer by the Titans today in order to retire and join ESPN. According to reports, the offer made by the Titans was seriously considered by Johnson. “They offered in the $7 million-$8 million range over two (years) with a substantial portion of it guaranteed. It was tempting. But at the end of the day ESPN deal was so strong," Johnson's agent said.

I wont shed a tear . Remember the team he wouldnt play for coming outa college ? Kinda fitting that same orginization is the only one to show interest in the waning moments of his career .

I can understand BA's bitterness but there is something to be said about retiring in one piece and while he's not exactly at the top of his game he still had some left in the tank. His knees will thank him in 10 years

He was Fisher's ball boy when fisher was at USC. I really cannot understand his decision. I mean money is a powerful motivator but you only get this chance once during your life. To take the couch just seems like he lost heart. He was talking up mentoring Carolina's rookie WR during the draft now he has a chance to play under a young QB and a young WR core and he passes. Just seems odd to me.

I do not think it is all that hard to understand.

Carolina = Playoff contention w/ possiblity of SB (so says experts)
Titans = Possible but doubtful

He wants another SB ring not just playing for a team that is young and rebuilding.

I don't know about that word to describe the Titans. Demolishing might be a better choice.

He's already rich as hell, & has a superbowl ring. According to some of the things i have read/heard about the amount of money he's going to recieve for being on the tube, all of them are right at what teams were willing to offer him. So you say what's the difference then? Well, he can now be assured his body will be in 1 piece, & 2, Like he & rod woodson were discussing, he can now spend more time with his kids.

The guy said he'd been contemplating it for 2 years & this very well could've happened last year. You can't question the guys heart b/c he didn't want to play with the almighty & ........................... who else again?

Keyshawn was a very good WR and made a good living doing what he enjoyed. Now it appears that he wants to do something else, so what's wrong with that? Perhaps he invested well enough that he can now do what HE wants. His body, his mind, his choice.

Yeah I am sure there are a ton of players in the league sitting around talking about how nice it will be when they get to walk away from it all

bitter, party of one, bitter. better get on the internet and cancel that nfl.com keyshawn titans jersey you had custom made.....

Please show me where I put words in Key's mouth

And I did not put the "motivation in his heart". When you come out and say that you will not go cheap and actually put a figure out there it is pretty obvious where the motivation was.

[/B]

Is it pretty obvious? Is it conclusive? I'll ask you again...when did you last speak to Keyshawn about this? You are assuming you know what he thinks and is motivated by. That's placing words in his mouth and motivation in his heart. Next time you speak to him, tell him I said "Hey, Key. Wassup?" and see what you hear back.

Last week ... We talked religion, politics, Euro football and towards the end the part about playing ball came up... also he had no clue who you are ... try a larger wig next time?

You can only stretch a ruber band so far. Stop trying to put words I have never said in my mouth. Once in a life time thing and if he was talking it up and the draft to be a mentor and then got snubbed and a guy you have played with before offers you more then double what you had called out .... :hmmm:

The guy is getting up there in years NFL-wise and i think its good to see him hang it up when he's still got some left in the tank. I hate seeing guys that keep on going and going way past when they shouldve quit, its almost sad to see guys that are just former shells of themselves trying to compete in a young man's game.

He's had a good career, got himself some hardware and lots and lots of money. At this point the difference between a tv deal and another football contract seems negligible, he'd obviously been teetering on the fence for a while and when he got cut from the panthers after they drafted jarret, then I guess that just made the decision that much easier.

Maybe he's just too old for this stuff
