EA Sports Apologizes to Texans Fans for Madden Ads

If you were watching the draft, you were likely familiar with the Reggie Bush "Thanks" commercial:

After I wrote a story about it, I ended up talking to the folks from EA Sports and they apologized saying that they weren't meaning to pour salt in Texan fans' wounds:

Personally, I could go the whole rest of my life without seeing that Reggie ad yet another time.
 
This post is misleading. They didn't apologize. They just put some spin on it: We had Mario on TV = we love Mario = we love the Texans.

*shrugs* Let's just face it, the media will never let us forget the 2006 draft (whether there's anything to forget or not).

They diliberately tried to bash the Texans organization, great marketing plan. Lets tic off the 6million buyers in the Houston Market. They said it was to provide advice, and exactly what advice would that be? If you are not the goldenboy eSpin anoints then you will be made fun of and then like mindless sheep others will do it without thinking? This email and or letter they sent you is just more like opps did we just tick off some would be buyers lets back peddle as fast as we can and give a lame excuse and hope the Texans fan base buys into it. Rosie has done a better job of back peddling. :rant:
 
You gotta hand it to PR people. They are good at de-emphesizing the obvious. Yeah, they made fun of the Texans, thus joining almost everyone else and many Texans fans. But in a way it's almost good--if Madden derides you, does it provide you with an anti-Curse?

Maybe this is what the team really needed to turn the corner, and EA knew that--so they really do love the Texans, and this is just part of a Rube Goldberg-esque plan to save the franchise.

Personally, I like the commercials and hope they serve as motivation for Mario and the entire organization. I have a sneaky feeling that Mario is going to outplay Crazy Legs and Scatback this season.

Yeah I recall that, they were not going to do the special edition of the Rockets first championship like they have done for every team for more than two decades, until the PR nightmare insued. Then they had to say it was a misquote and that they were always going to do the special edition.

I think that actions speak louder than words, which is why the commercials poked fun at Mario and Houston without regard in the 1st place. They can half-appologize all they want, because in the end they bought into the hype that landed Vince Young the cover.
 
If only EA's product was as good as their ad campaigns. Madden has become a joke of a video game franchise, barely updating rosters from year to year. After they signed exclusive rights to the NFL (and every other football league, for that matter), they keep pushing the same old tired Madden.

Hit 'em where it hurts: the bank account. Don't buy the product, but instead opt for something much, much better. All-Pro Football 2k8 is coming this summer, and we can play as legends of the game. I can't wait to draft Earl Campbell to my franchise!
 
That commercial just made me that much happier that RB is NOT on our team!! What a classless thing to do! He's an a*s who has yet to pay for the lies and deceptions he committed while he was at USC. I am GLAD he is not a Texan!! JMO!

Honestly the commercials didn't bother me....I liked them...

I think it just livens the spirit of competition....It's not like they were nasty or down right degrading about it...A little trash talk and show boating can be a good thing as long as it's not taken to extremes...I just think it makes the games with the Saints and Titans this year even better because now we as fans want Mario to crush them both even more now....Which will cause a supercharged atmosphere which hopefully the players feed off of....

Basically I don't think it was over the top...I think it just adds to the excitement....
 
I left my thoughts on the original blog but I will reiterate them here. EA won't feel the pinch much, but I'm not buying this years version as a result of the ads.

It was a premeditated ad campaign aimed directly at our FO in an attempt to embarrass them.

VY's comercial didnt bother me, it was Reggie and that smug "thanks" that makes me want Mario and Okoye to play wishbone with the little twig. He has done next to nothing and he gets credit for the Saints sucess. Breese and McAlister should be pissed. That attitude from a smug POS, who wasnt even the best rookie on his own TEAM. Lame.
 
I'm still waiting for the NFL owners meeting where they re-write the NFL rule book to compensate for Reggie Bush's greatness. We were told by 'experts' that he was the kind of player that would require a new rule book, so I'm waiting. :hmmm: but not holding my breath

That was actually my thought. As a player and now a coach I've always loved being the underdog (whether truly or perceived) and having something to prove--if this isn't fuel to that fire, I don't know what it will take. I personally hope Mario decleats Vince AND Reggie this year and then makes a commercial about it, and I want to be there cheering him and rest of the team on when he does it.

As much as I hated losing to Vince and the Tacks this year, that was the most exciting professional sports game I've ever been to, and I look forward to many more years of what might well become one of sport's greatest rivalries. The NFL couldn't have written a better introduction if they had planned it.

I have been a die-hard Maddenite for years and it saddens me to see the product becoming what it has. For three years now the game has not changed significantly and in many instances has actually gotten worse. For the first time in years I will not buy the game outright the day it hits the shelves but will wait and see, perhaps rent it first, before making my decision. I was afraid from the moment I heard of that exclusive rights deal that this might happen, and it seems that it has.

Folks, in a nutshell, this is a small but potent example of what happens where there is no capitalism--no competition--for manufacturers of a product.

I agree. Vince's commercial seemed to mirror his personality. Confident, but not too boastful. Why shouldn't he want to win in his hometown? That's natural, just as I want to see the Texans sack and pick him off. That's football.

Actually, Reggie's ad mirrored his personality, as well. A smart arse, me-first guy who has no one to blame for not being the #1 overall pick than himself. He's the one that lied in his interview with Bob McNair. He's the one who wanted to play hardball over the contract negotiation. Now, he wants to play it as he was wronged? Like he carried his team to the NFC championship game? As SheTexan said, I'm glad Reggie is not a Texan.
 
You know what I call all that "salt" on the Reggie/Vince wound?

"Mario Fuel".

Unless he's got the kind of heart and motor that TJ has I hope he hears all of the noise about Reggie/Vince and the Texans blowing the pick and I hope he hears it all of the time.

If he has TJ's motor it doesn't really matter what he hears I guess.

Khari it is not just the commercial, it is this whole attitude, that the media can say what ever they want and do what ever they want because No one is going to say onething against it.

Just recently before the draft Sean Salisbury said the Texans should still have drafted Reggie Bush because it would have put more butt in the seats. EXCUSE, me!!?? The Texans sell out there season tickets every year and sell out every single home game. I am just personally sick of the media acting like the Texans (And there FANS) are worhtless. That is what gets to me, I sick of the regergitation of lets make fun of the Team and those who support it, and unless we voice that displeasure then it is ok to treat them like crap.


Nope, not this Texan fan I will not be someones punch line and be disgraced, not anymore.

Couldn't have said it better myself. We'll see what our team does about it on the field. Commercials, draft "experts", guru=Over-rated. Talk on the field, end of discussion.

Texans knew they were going to take punishment from the media when they didnt take one of the two biggest media darlings in last years draft. The media loves those guys and will use them so they made a commerical trashing the Texans....not a big deal. Tell Mario to get 20 sacks and get on the cover of Madden and then all of this will go away.

If you want to analyze this, by passing up Bush and VY, the Texans themselves had a horrible marketing campaign last year.

I ain't got no wounds from not drafting Vince, or Reggie, so you're just wasting good salt(now I might get a little upset about that).

It's just a commercial, and it didn't rub me one way or the other. When I saw the Vince Young commercial, I was like, "yeah!!..... that's right, nobody believed in you, and you showed them, yeah!! you started your first year, when everybody said you were a 2 year project. YEAH!! you influenced the out come of some games, when they said you couldn't will your team to an NFL win. YEAH!! you showed them you can do all those things that made you great in College....... now hold on, did we have to go there(with the win in Houston)... and Yeah, I'm proud that you were the rookie of the year, and got to play in the probowl as a rookie."

The Reggie Bush commercial had me kinda confused though.. I mean he said, "to All those teams that passed on me....... THANKS" now, I'm not a college graduate or anything, but how does one team equal "all those teams??" & his situation was nothing like Vince's, where few people thought he would succeed in the NFL, it was quite the opposite. "EVERYBODY" just knew he was going to be the greatest great player to ever play the game.

But neither of those commercials are any worse than the Joey Porter commercial where he thanks Dallas for dissing him, and allowing him to go to the Steelers, where he won a Super Bowl & Dallas hasn't won a play off game in over a decade.

I just wish our fans would stop crying about this Reggie Bush crap. Or even the Vince Young stuff. If you didn't really want those guys, and you're really happy with Mario... what difference does it make??
 
Oh no! Madden doesn't like us! (or the EA Marketing people, anyway) Now they're going to totally underrate Alfred Malone. And I was totally going to trade him for Griese.

Probably put Pitts back at tackle, too.

Commercials don't bother me too much. I like Mario Williams and wasn't too disappointed in the pick, but he was picked mainly on signablility. Reggie Bush, IMO, would still have been the smarter pick. But the Texans didn't want a holdout. Too late now though.
 
Anyone remember the DTV commercial where Manning basically ran the score on the Titans that was running last season? Same difference IMO.
 
My favorite anti-Texan commercial was either in our first or second season where ESPN showed only the QB and the center on screen going against the entire defense of some other team (Colts or Titans I think). I don't remember what the commercial was trying to sell or advertise, but I got a good chuckle out of it.
 
I guess I take my loyalty a little to far and just sick of the media bashing the team I support. If you think it is just the commercial, then you have not heard everything the media says day-in and day-out. Until the team wins and the fans stop bending over and taking it, they will continue to do what they want.

Well that might be true on 1 level, the Texans did have sellouts every game, but no way were they a full house every game. I can tell you the last season that the place was not full a few times, sometimes I can say it was 75% full at best, and that also had to do with the schedule being before holidays. But would RB have gotten more a**es into the seats, who knows. Would VY have, again, who knows...What is done is done, only winning brings Houstonians to thier seats, as we really are a fair weather market, sad to admit. So, unless it was Jesus himself, it wouldn't have mattered who was drafted first last season..

*ahem*... I remember the commercial that you are talking about... It was advertising for that years draft, I beleive... The catch phrase was something about having needs - or something to that affect...

BINGO!

TDC company policy is that we stay until 0:00, no matter what the game is like. It can be a brutal commitment, but it is what we believe fanatics are all about.

There have been quite a few games the past couple of seasons that only had 5,000-10,000 people left in the stadium. We are indeed a fair-weather market, for the most part.
 
Could we theoretically stage a big protest against EA on the Madden release date? I think that'd be awesome. We could picket best buys and give htem all sorts of horrible PR. What do people think?

I've always believed that if Reggie had said how bad he wanted to be a Texan as opposed to how excited he was to be the first pick, that he might be a Texan.

I listened to everything he ever said pre-draft. You know the Texans have the first pick, well then, you suck up to them don't you--job interview 101, right? Not Reggie.

He was busy talking about the marketing opportunities of being in New York as a Jet. He rarely said good things about Houston or the Texans. I participated in an online chat where I served up a softball where he could have said great things about coming here and his response was tepid.

He wanted the Texans to trade the pick. He wasn't terribly eager to become The Man That Was Not Vince Young--you could hear that everytime he talked about it.

The EA Sports commercial is merely a continuation of that.

I am not hugely bothered by the spot. Just annoyed and wish it went away. EA Sports could have shot those ads in a million ways and chose to stick it to the Texans. They thought it was funny. And I thought it was funny to call them for doing it, and getting them to apologize. Because I'm mischievous that way.

EA or Electronic Arts is the largest producer of video games in the world by a long shot. Most companies are owned by them as a subsidiary. I worked on Sim City 2000 under the name Maxis, there were 5 full time employees in a 10 story building - "The Maxis Building". EA kept the name so people who disliked EA would not make the connection.

What you are saying is like trying to take on Wal-Mart.

Demeco should have a commercial Thanking all 31 teams that passed him. Maybe after he wins the Super Bowl MVP one day.:texflag:
 
Before playing the Texans, Bush and Vince need to remind the NFL office that body slams are allowed only on WWE. This year our defense are going to put some "HURT" into tackles. HAHAHAH! Welcome to the Jungle!!
