Expectations of Mario Williams in 2007

i figured since we have an expectation thread for matt schaub our new number 8 we could use a expectation thread on our former 1st overall pick last year.

so what is everyones expectations for mario this season?

i want to see him be the dominant player he was at college for a good portion of the season...i know he's not ready yet to be a dominant every game but if he can rack up around 10 sacks this season i think we have look at that as huge improvement...i want to see him develop a second pass rush technique...and i want to see him at one position...not switching back and fourth between dt and de...i think that alone will help him the most
 
Double Digit Sacks

and maybe towards the end of the season, see him able to get some penetration from inside the line, but thats icing on the cake.
 
I just expect him to be there to force teams to run the other way and to have a few more games like the Giants game. I expect to see OT's flying into the backfield and landing on their backs and some QB's to have that "OH SHEEET!!!!" look on their faces.

I don't want to get caught up in numbers other than wins and losses.
 
Personally, my expectations for him is no different than the rest of the team. I say just go out and give it your all, 100% of the time. I don't like excuses about him or anyone else for that matter playing in pain and all that stuff. If you're on the field, play hard. It's just that simple.
 
Honestly I do not care how many sacks he gets, if he can demand double coverage often, that should lead to sacks for the team.

I expect to see him more calm than last year, fewer jitters. And if the toe-thingie were the thing holding him back last year (I guess it is, I have no reason to think otherwise) then he'll be a dominating factor on our defence.

So... I expect few sacks from Mario, but a dominating and vital role in the defense, leading to overall success :)
 
I would like to see him in the pro bowl but if nothing else as long as he contributes to us getting our first winning season then I would say thats a start.
 
He had 4.5 sacks at the mid-point of last season then suffered from plantar fasciitis. I think he will be very good this year, but not great. I'm guessing 8-12 sacks if he stays healthy at least 14 games.
 
I expect him to be a top 5 pass rusher and lead our team with tackles for loss. Tackles for loss are just as valuable as sacks, but they aren't talked about as much. I also expect a few more forced fumbles. He showed great progression last season and now that he is injury free he should come out with a lot to prove and have a great season.

I mean...vince shoots lasers out his eyes...Mario's gotta one-up that.

That sound more likely....I'll say 10-14 though. It may sound a bit much, but he was on a roll to get 9 last season before the injury, and hopefully he will only improve. The only thing that might keep him at 10 sacks or fewer is the fact that we still don't have a single quality DT.
 
Haha I'm surprised I haven't heard anyone say "go back in time and make the Texans select VY"

But seriously, I fully expect him to produce at least 10 sacks and 2 forced fumbles
 
I think mario will be a co pletely different player this year, now that he has a season under his belt and a full nfl off-season to work on his technique. Here are my predictions for mario: 12 sacks, 2 FF's, 1 INT and 5-6 Pass Def. (he had 3 last season)
I think he gets a pick Peppers style this season :-)
 
I expect Mario to be the dominant DE we drafted him to be. I want him to shatter the sack record for our team and be the leader on our D Line. He showed us signs of it even when he was injured, so I want to see what happens when he's healthy and not a rookie.

I expect a breakout season for Mario Williams next year. That means anything less than 9 sacks is a disappointment to me. I'm with Michael Smith on this one!
 
I want him and demeco to gain the reputation as being the "Super Smash Bros"... haha.. maybe Demeco will change his name to Luigi.... its Marrrriooo and Luuuiiigiiii

Just to become a force

Michael Smith of ESPN picked him to become the most improved player from last year

I think he will become the player he was drafted to become

In a weird way I think the foot injury helped him, just like (for ya'll college basketball fans) Greg Oden hurt his right hand and had to learn to shot with his left, so his injury made him a better all around player

Just like Mario hurt his foot, he wasn't able to get to the QB as easily so he was forced to work on his rush stopping ability, which was a very nice aspect of his game I didn't know he had, which will help him become a better overall DE

I expect him to earn a new nickname: The Great Disruptor

I really think if he stays healthy we will see him in the other guy's backfield a bunch, and chasing more plays down from behind. Mario may not log them, but I think sack totals will rise dramatically.
 
Let's just get it over with. Expectations for specific players and the team:

Mario - I expect to see major improvement from the first to second season. That means Mario and Demeco need to become a dominant wrecking force. Double-digit sacks from Williams. At least once this season, I expect him to tackle a reverse from behind. He came close a few times last year.

Demeco - I hope to see less tackles, but better tackles, and better coverage. He has the "it" factor - he just needs to read better and make more stops for losses.

Babin - I expect him to see lots more action and to show that he deserved to be a first-round pick.

Dunta - Once the Texans take a CB or Safety, the excuses are gone. I want interceptions, and I want good coverage.

Spencer - Better have Matt's blind side. If he gets more than five sacks in a season, he's a waste.

Winston - I expect much more improvment in footwork this year. His technique should be more sound. Like Spencer, less than five sacks in the season.

AJ - I don't expect another pro-bowl year. The Texans will likely draft a #2 wide receiver in the third round. I'm not expecting much, and without a credible number two receiver, he will be double and triple teamed again. He might make his incentive yardage, but I doubt it. Which brings us to

Green/Dayne - The workhorse of the Texans is the running game. Without it, it's sink or swim. I expect them to both have thousand yard seasons. That is the only way for the Texans to be legit.

Owen Daniels - Not much. Keep doing what you're doing, and you'll be fine. Without a legit number two, Daniels gets more catches. Not sure if this will help the team, though.

With a new QB who is supposed to fix all the offensive woes and a defense that is continuously bolstered, they need to go at least 9-7. 10-6 with a play-off birth is more what they need to do, but I have low expectations.

Speaking of expectations, even though all these things should happen, here's what I think will be the reality: run-first means Green fumbling at the wrong times. Matt will prove to be a good QB, especially for a "rookie," and will make "rookie" mistakes. He won't fix all the offensive problems. The defense, not having bolstered their ability to defend against the run, but having to be on the field as much as last year due to fumble problems, will falter. End result: another losing year, possibly less wins than this year. Wins against Tennessee, Jacksonville, Oakland, Tampa, and another win against a team you'd never expect them to beat (San Diego, Denver, or New Orleans).

I hope I'm wrong.
 
i dont expect numbers from mario. in my ideal situation, babin leads the team with 10-15 sacks with ryans and orr making their marks ... all directly because of mario's influence. mario's a hybrid that should be around 6-9 sacks and is a player that teams fear running against. during his rookie season i was able to say mario had a game where the opposing team ran at mario 3 times for 4 yards ... he was also individually vital to winning 3 games (indy, miami, cleveland). i expect that to be a norm. if mario has my perfect season, he wont get considered for a probowl because he'll be an unsung hero. a mix between similarly sized julius peppers and big john henderson. pressure from the end, run stuffer. it aint pretty, but it wins games.

mario WILL be that player though based on last year. anyone who diagnosed his play was impressed by the instinctual and intellectual improvement he showed. remember, mario's an underaged freak with a low "football" mental base and still has to grow into his body. he's doing that literally right before our eyes and looks to be a menace.

That's a good take. I'm not going to base his performance on one statistic, if I see him creating opportunities for his team mates and stuffing the run, he's doing his job in my book.

One more thing I want to add is that I hope to see Mario on the field more often. He was missing from the game for entire series' last year, and if he's healthy this year we need his presence on the field as much as possible. He has too much play making ability, we can't afford to have him on the sidelines for long stretches.

Right. I would like more sacks from him but even injured, he made a few plays that really displayed scary ability from him that don't really show up in the stat line. When he doesn't over-think things and just acts instinctively, he's amazing. I want some more plays like the sweep he blew up against the Bills and when he nailed the guy on the fake reverse.

IMO, with Mario wreaking havock, I see Ryans being the biggest benificiary. There were MANY times last season that Ryans was able to get pressure up the middle because Mario cleared out his side of the LOS. With a year under their belts, these two can be Holy Terrors!!

:elmo: Anything less than double digits for him would be a disappointment. I know every body says that if he demands double teams and allows others to make plays but I think he should be able to do that while racking up double digit sacks. See Julius Peppers, Dwight Freeney, and pretty much every other premier pass rusher in the league.

He needs to become the Beast everyone said he would be when he was drafted. Needs to dominate whomever is over him and get 10+ sacks this yr. The foot injury should not be a problem this yr. so there will be no more excuses if he does not perform well. Get Em Mario!!!

It's silly to think Vonnie Holliday, & Keith Traylor have little to do with Taylor's success.

Or that Kris Jenkins, Damione Lewis & Maake Kemoeatu have nothing to do with how successful Peppers is:

I think it'll be an exciting season for the Panthers, especially with the way they finished last season. The one thing you have to watch is how well defensive tackle Kris Jenkins plays. He is the pulse of the defense. If he plays well, he allows that defense – and especially Peppers – to do its thing. If he's inconsistent, then the defense line is only average.

& while we are on the subject of Maake Kemoeatu, why is it exactly that Ray Lewis was extremely upset with him leaving Balimore, and pretty much demanded that the Ravens get him a new big ugly early in the draft??

Now, double digit sacks for Mario would be nice. But if our run defense can get into the top ten, I'd be extremely happy, regardless how many sacks Mario has.
 
if we go 10-6 or better with a fighting chance at the playoffs mario can go all year without a single sack for all i care. but on the flip side. double digits sacks would be great!

Right on brotha, being a carolina fan i know how important it is to surround a star DE with help. Mario still needs help, or all he is going to see is double teams and chips non-stop. The nice thing about mario though, is even when he gets doubled he can still be a disruptive force because of his insane strength.

In all honesty, if that's the expectations, then we'll spend the first 4 weeks of the season trying to get Mario a sack, instead of Just letting him play football.

We lost the Tennessee game at Reliant, because we forgot about the run, and focused on a rookie QB. We allowed Vince Young to have a career throwing day against us.

65% completions, 218 yards throwing, 86 yards rushing, It will be a while, before he can match that stat line again.

Hopefully our Coaching staff will let Mario be Mario. Let him play his game. the Sacks will come, no reason to force it.
 
I would like him to play an integral part in the defensive success. Force bad throws from qbs that result in turnovers, turn running backs inside for a loss of yardage, be gameplanned against and still making an impact despite teams double teaming him, things like that.

Not so much stats like sacks and tackles but things that help the team score more points than whomever they play.
 
100 sacks in 1 game, while playing madden, eating a sandwich, gettin' dome from a chick, watching family guy laughin his off, postin on the texans new msg board, and doing his taxes.
