Vonta Leach to Meet with Cardinals

http://houstonprofootball.com/

Since linebacker Shantee Orr and fullback Vonta Leach were undrafted coming out of college, the Texans only own the right of first refusal. This means that if another team is very eager to signed either player, a poison pill clause can be inserted into the offer, thereby guaranteeing the salaries if the player were to stay in Houston, making it difficult for the Texans to match.

Very similar to what they did in the Burleson/Hutchinson thing....Like put a clause that would say...."If this player plays more than 5 games in the state of Texas, a 10 million dollar roster bonus must be paid"...etc etc...

It is a wierd loophole but it is allowed

You really think the Cardinals would use the poison pill, which is looked down upon, to get a FB? Hopefully if they offer anything we will match it...

Good point. It's not wise for one team to risk the wrath of another over a
player like Vonta Leach. Not to discount or dis Leach's contribution to the Texans last year, but he's not quite the caliber or level of player a franchise would make war with another franchise over.
But somebody said earlier in the thread that Leach was a RFA. Well that sounded too good to be true since he'd been in the league for a couple years, but only here last year. But I definitely dunno 'bout the rules & regulation on that subject ?

i hope leach isn't offered that big of a contract...i do want him back...i don't know of any injuries he has had in the past so i really wouldn't mind the garentee portion of the contract to keep him...as long as it makes sense in reference to the fact that he is a FB not a RB...and that he really isn't the top teir FB like Neal, Alstott, or Richardson

I remeber that whole thing (came back to bite the Seahawks in the ass with Burleson), but it seems a very strange thing to be allowed.

Really hope we can hold onto him. He seems like an answer at FB and we don't need to be filling more holes at this point.

I guess my only questions are, why didn't we sign him before the FA period began and try to lock him up with a nice 3 to 4 year contract? Or, did he want to test the market? Anybody know?

He's way too valuable to lose IMO.

I'd like to se him back as well - unless we're planning on drafting a FB in the first round...:brickwall :sarcasm:

i think he'll be back...but if not i still think that cook can be a solid FB for us...i think he had some bad luck in a few games last year...the fumble in the giant game wasn't even a fumble in the jet game...shotty refs screwed us on that one

Gulp..... I am holding my breath hoping and praying that Vonta is a Texan next year. I do NOT want to imagine the other possibility currently on our roster...:drunk:
