Steelers Release Porter, Haynes; Tender Offers to Starks, St. Pierre

PITTSBURGH — The Steelers released veteran outside linebacker Joey Porter and running back Verron Haynes, the team announced today.

Porter, an eight-year veteran, was originally selected by the Steelers in the third round (73rd overall) of the 1999 NFL Draft out of Colorado State.

Porter started in 14 games in 2006, and finished the season tied for seventh on the team with 64 tackles (43 solo). He led the Steelers with seven quarterback sacks and intercepted two passes which tied for second on the team.

In eight seasons with the Steelers, Porter played in 122 games and made 106 starts. He recorded 498 tackles (374 solo) and 10 interceptions, and ranks fourth in team history with 60 quarterback sacks. Porter, who was the team's defensive co-captain since 2003, earned three trips to the Pro Bowl (2003, 2005 and 2006) and was voted Steelers' co-MVP in 2002.

Haynes was the Steelers' fifth round draft choice in 2002 (166th overall). He played seven games in 2006 before being placed on the reserve/injured list with a knee injury versus Oakland (Oct. 29). Haynes played in 60 games with the Steelers and rushed for 738 yards and three touchdowns on 174 carries (4.2 avg.).

The Steelers also made tender offers to offensive tackle Max Starks and quarterback Brian St. Pierre.

By making the tenders to Starks and St. Pierre, the Steelers reserve the right to retain the players by matching any offer sheets they would sign with another team. Starks and St. Pierre could also remain with the Steelers by signing their tender offer for 2007 or by signing a long-term contract with the team.

Starks will enter his fourth NFL season in 2007 after being drafted by the Steelers in the third round (75th overall) of the 2004 NFL Draft. He has started 30 career games after becoming a full-time starter in 2005. He helped Pittsburgh rank third in the AFC in 2006 in total yards per game (357.8) and aided in Willie Parker's team-record rushing performance (233 rushing yards) in a win over Cleveland in Week 14.

St. Pierre spent nearly the entire 2006 season with Steelers on both the active roster and practice squad. St. Pierre, originally drafted by the Steelers in the fifth round (163rd overall) of the 2003 NFL Draft, has spent three years with Pittsburgh and has also spent time on the Baltimore Ravens' 53-man roster and their practice squad.

The Steelers also released offensive tackle Ulish Booker, who spent the 2006 season on the team's reserve/injured list after hurting his knee in the preseason.

Anyone else interested in picking up Porter for our LB crew? I'd love to have him.

I could really see the Patriots picking this guy up though...

what has his salary been? i know he's a tough dude and all but i really havn't followed him much. he's been in the league what 8 years? Is he getting old and beat up, or is he still fluid and able to play at full potential?

If he's good and healthy that'd be awesome...is he an olb or mlb?

Ah, Football!
Don't the Steelers run a 3-4? Ah, who cares! I'd at least be picking up the phone. It never hurts to try.:shades:

Porter was scheduled to make $5.225 million this season from a base standpoint I believe. Which would seem in line as this caliber of player would have an escalating base per year.

I'd love to have him in a Texans uni, but I've got a feeling it's a snowball's chance in hell for it to happen.

I think Porter is a heck of a 3-4 OLB...

I don't think he will be as good in a 4-3 though...JMO

Isn't he a bit of a loose cannon?
Is he ? I've never heard anything like that....

But I'd love for him to end up with the Patriots....They need linebackers, and they run a 3-4....

i think we should get him if the price is right.....our defense seems to be the focus....although we need offensiveplayers...but for some reason i think kubs wants our to d to be one of the best.....we do need that plus we are closer to a better d than o......

Even if it is alot, wouldn't the veteran experience be worth it? Porter and Ryans...that would be one hell of a combo!

We don't run the right kind of defense for Porter to be successful.

We play a read and react type defense...

Joey Porter is more suited for an attacking defense like *gag* Miami....

Don't talk about age until the player starts talking about age. 30 isn't old in football. It is like being a teenager (almost adult).

wow...that was the heart of the Steelers' D, very surprising to me. Anyway, if Miami gets him, they could have a hell of an OLB pairing with him and Taylor, for a couple years at least.

I saw today on Sports Center that he was released by the Steelers he's looking to get around 6 million a year on our cap. But think of the leadership he would bring paired up with Ryans we could easily have one of the best linebacking cores in the Nfl.

Porter would be nice to have. Not sure we can pull that off though. He may end up in New Orleans or maybe the Giants.

30 may not be too old but its also not young either. he's played what 8 seasons? Age/years played is different for different positions, too.

He could also bring that killer mindset to players like Ryans what a mentor he could be to him. I just do not see him coming here even if we could afford him. He would like to sign within his division so he could make them pay for cutting him.

I see the Ravens as a better fit. The guy is a complete package LB...but will wepay for that. Probably not, seeing they are still in a semi-youth movement to try to get a team that will start winning and keep winning. Denver did it, and guess where our coach came from?

Makes sence, plus they where also after a SS or FS in FA and just maybe a certian LB from the Ravens(too high priced agian I think).

you know honestly i don't get some of the posters here. You gripe and whine about how there's no fire, no excitement on this team and when a guy comes available to do both. You scream bloody murder that they guy is 30 years old and overrated. 30 is middle age for a LB. Despite what you say other then Ryans and maybe Greenwood no one else even touches his talent and playmaking ability in that corps.

Porter had 8 sacks last year i beleive with injuries and all. No one on our team had nearly that many. I understand the idea of dumping some older bad contracts and cutting some of the fat here. I'm agreeable to that. But if we don't upgrade or at least get comparable talent to replace it. Expect another season like when we went 7-9 and then belly flopped.

IMO i think it's easier for a LB to transition from a 3-4 to a 4-3 then the other way around. It'd be worth a look if nothing else we aren't going to land Thomas and maybe we'll select Bishop in the 4th.

Hey i also heard Steve Foley is going to be released by the Chargers :P

Porter is a big, mean dude. He has a fire and a passion. He was the heart of one of the best defenses in the league and led them to a superbolw. He put up a good number of tackles and sacks playing on the outside. Porter is explosive and will let you know about it. That is the spark our team is missing, that swagger if you will.

That is one reason why I wouldn't mind having him. He could spark up some of our players. Dunta is starting too, but Porter will get it!

Porter had a pretty dissapointing season last year...I think he struggles in space and is more of a 3-4 guy (pass rusher) than a legit 4-3 olb that has to drop into coverage as half of his game.
Before the season, he said he'd play below his ability unless he got an extension. Great character.
