Nate Clements

texans83

Rookie
790 just said that NC is on the texans list for bringing in.... I like it but I dont want to spend all our money on one guy. what do you all think?

I want Champ Bailey money too.

We can make a run at Clements. If he was the only free agent we picked up, I wouldn't cry. He can flat-out play the pass. We need that.

I'd hope for a volume of contributors than a single superstud though.

Nate was on sportsradio 610 a couple of weeks ago and he said then that he would love to play in Houston since he lives here but the money has to be right.

exactly. im pretty sure we could sign him if we wanted to, but at the expense of bringing in help at our other needs...

the reason the texans drafted mario over bush was becasue they said they did not want to out score peyton but to try to stop him, what better way to help stop manning is to get a shut down corner

This just in - the best players want top money to sign as a FA.

So the alternative is to bring in a bunch of nobodys?

Is the goal to win, or is there a prize for saving money? I would rataher win the SB than win the stingiest team contest.

If we can sign Nate, do it unless the money just gets silly. We don't even know what the deal is yet, but people are already slamming it.

I hear Sister Mary from the Catholic School is available and much cheaper. :brickwall

I'm wondering if Domanick Williams has restructured his contract seeing as he hasn't been cut. I'd like to see the implications of these cuts capwise to see if signing Clements would keep us from signing anyone else.

I agree to what you are saying im just saying I do not want to over pay...

Maybe they're just waiting to cut DW while no one is watching....

Well I am tired of not getting top FA. It's time to play ball and we need guys on this team that can. Nate Clemens automatically makes Dunta even better.

well 790 just said that there will be more cuts so we will just have to wait and see.

John McClain just said on sportsradio 610 that he expects the Texans to cut Williams today or tomorrow.

well i have faith that the texans are now makeing the right decisions and will do what ever is best for this team, i just have a feeling there are alot more suprises in store for the texans fans

Just because you don't go out and sign every big name player doesn't mean that you are signing a bunch of nobodies. And even if they are nobodies, how do you know they are bad? Last time I checked, the Patriots won a few Super Bowls with a bunch of nobodies and the Saints filled the majority of their roster with a bunch of nobodies this year.

Would you rather us be like the Redskins?

Well said. You never average player your way to SB.

Actually, I would rather have one really good guy that fills a tremendous position of need than more FA depth guys.

So, I actully don't care if we spend all of our available FA designated money on Clements. I would have given the nod to Samuels but unfortunately New England took care of that when they put the franchise tag on him. That said, I doubt we will get him as the price for him may go over what we can pay even if use the whole pot on him. My second choice is Hamlin the FS from Seattle but I will be shocked if we take a shot at him because of off the field character concerns.

IMO, we need someone really good on the other side of D(sorry about my mouth)Rob to push him since he has regressed over the last two years. If not FA then we will need to burn a draft pick on CB when we should be drafting a OLT, FS, OLB, WR, C/OG and DT (probably in that order btw regarding need) which is another reason why you suck it up and get it done with Clements if you can.

if you mean getting jumped outside of a Seattle nightclub as an innocent bystander, then that is a tough way to get a "character concern" label. it's not like this guy is adam jones or anything.

New England, Saints and how do you know if we do sign him that he wont be just collecting that last big check and kind of take it easy, thats the last thing we need, the one guy we spend all of out money on is a BUST!!!!!yup sounds like the texans

Good to know and I for one hope that the Texans agree with you on that. I have mentioned many times in previous posts that Hamlin was high on my wish list. He is big (6'2" or something) for a FS and would be a definite upgrade over CC Brown IMO.

Did you foget the Saints signed Drew Brees, a high calibur big name FA? I'm not advocating throwing caution to the wind and try to sign every top shelf FA on the market, but I am saying that Nate Clements is the top available corner this yr, whether by FA or the draft. He would instantly upgrade our secondary, and it's worth exploring what it would take to sign him.

The Pats already had a base of very talented players they drafted, and they continue to draft extremely smartly every yr. They coach and draft to a system, and they are an abberation. Most teams cannot do that, or guess what, all of them would.

i'd love to get hamlin. it seems like there is a decent safety market this year, and we sure could use a tangible upgrade over brown and earl. does hamlin figure at free or strong safety?

Nate Clements might play here. :pigfly:

If we just had to cut Eric Moulds to free up cap space, then we can't afford Clements. Too many needs and not enough money.

We're screwed with the cap right now. Maybe next season too.

He is a FS which is where we are weakest IMO. If we miss on Hamlin, there are a couple of interesting prospects in the draft though. I am not aware of any other viable FA FS out there.

Almost any FS or SS we sign or draft (if they are drafted in the first 3 round) would be an upgrade over what we have now.

I agree with the FS part of your statement and would add perhaps even in the 4th round this year. I'm not as down on Earl as some of you guys are (doesn't mean that you guys aren't right about him though). I just did not notice as much from him that disappointed me last year as I did with CC Brown. BTW, while we are on the subject of our defensive backfield, Drob who I have steadfastly been very positive on really disappointed me last year with his lack of consistency so this unit really needs some help.

Without starting a holy war here, I would say that our defensive backfield is our second weakest link (#1 being our offensive line IMO).

Aside from Duna you're right it is the Weakest link. At least last year we got SOME help on the OL and i am sure it will be further addressed.

I would like Hamlin or Lewis and Still pick up Landry if Brown is gone at 8 or...maybe even if Brown is there. We could pick up a middle tier CB to play opposite of Dunta.

As for Clements no thanks. He'll want a paycheck this team hopefully wouldn't take with all the dead cap space we're looking down the barrell at the next few years. We need another strong draft and a good collection of role guys in FA. I jsut hope record wise with some of the moves lately it won't cost us in the win column or at least regress in talent.
